Enlightened Empathy: Applied Theatre Transforming Society and Self
While working on this project, I struggled with what to actually call this category of theatre. Augusto Boal uses the term “theatre of the oppressed” to describe his model of theatre. Other theatre artists use terms like social justice theatre, grassroots theatre, political theatre, or popular participatory theatre. I decided that the best-fitting term was applied theatre, which is described by Prendergast & Saxton as a type of theatre that “works overtly either to reassert or to undermine socio-political norms, as its intent is to reveal more clearly the way the world is working” (Prendergast & Saxton, 2009, p. 8). Applied theatre, specifically applied theatre that takes its cues from Boal’s work, allows for both the development of knowledge and the experience of empathy. The combination of those two can create multiple levels of change. Applied theatre creates enlightened empathy by encouraging transformation, both internally/personally and externally/socially. This paper seeks to answer the questions addressed in the introduction through the lens of Augusto Boal’s work on applied theatre. Boal was a Brazilian drama theorist and theatre practitioner in the mid to late 1900s who created a new method of theatre called “theatre of the oppressed”, which served as the basis for much of future applied theatre globally. I will explore the foundations of Boal’s work, specifically Greek tragic theatre and the works of Bertolt Brecht. I will also examine Boal’s two main theories of applied theatre. One focuses on external action while the other focuses on internal development. The paper will investigate case studies of the application of Boal’s theories and technique as well as domains where applied theatre is commonly used. To honor Boal’s belief that theatre must be active and participatory, the paper requires action and participation on the behalf of the reader. At the end of each section is a connection to an applied theatre piece that I have written, entitled Reclamation x 5. Reclamation x 5 portrays the process of healing from mental illness by showing the experiences of young women at a mental health summer camp. I will ask the reader questions in the hopes of directly applying these theories and ideas to a real theatre piece. The Use of Concept Mapping to Facilitate Critical Thinking Skills in Nursing students
Background: Many prelicensure nursing students lack the critical thinking abilities to safely care for patients in today’s healthcare environments. Concept mapping is an active learning strategy that emphasizes a visual relationship between concepts that have the potential to promote meaningful learning and development of critical thinking. Therefore, the purpose of this evidence-synthesizing project was to review and synthesize current evidence to determine the best practices in nursing education to promote critical thinking abilities in prelicensure nursing students.
Methods: A literature search was conducted using CINAHL, Education Source, and ERIC databases which resulted in seven articles selected for review. The evidence included full-text research evidence published in peer reviewed journals between 2013 to 2020 in the English language. The evidence was critiqued using the John’s Hopkins Evidence-based Nursing model and guidelines.
Results: The seven pieces of evidence revealed consistent results that support the use of concept mapping in nursing education to facilitate critical thinking in prelicensure nursing students. Three themes emerged from the evidence including making meaningful connections between theory and practice, combining pedagogies within nursing education, and a holistic viewpoint.
Implications: Nurse educators may use concept mapping to facilitate critical thinking, however combining concept mapping with other pedagogies and providing concept mapping education to students may provide additional benefits. Future research is warranted regarding the specific environment in which concept mapping should be used, other populations of interest, and the development of one holistic critical thinking measure

Murray Library at Messiah College created a unique marketing tool called Murray in a Hurry. This newsletter is typically distributed every two weeks and is hung in all bathroom stalls. It provides information on library events, new materials, literary quotes, grammar, and humor. This combined document includes all issues during the 2019-2020 academic year
Panama Bridge Project
The Panama Bridge project has partnered with Rio Missions Panama to design a bridge for the village of La Gigi, Panama. The mountain community of La Gigi experiences heavy rainfall during the rainy seasons. A stream runs along the community, separating locals from their fields and other communities further up the mountain. While passable during dry seasons, the stream floods and becomes impassable after heavy rains. The residents are effectively cut off from their livelihoods, church, health services, and other communities during this time.
To accommodate this need, the Panama Bridge Team has spent the 2019-2020 school year designing an aluminum truss bridge, spanning 90 feet. The design includes a unique construction strategy to deal with challenging site constraints.https://mosaic.messiah.edu/engr2020/1020/thumbnail.jp
Covenant Christian Academy - Civil Design
The Covenant Christian Academy Civil Design team has partnered with Covenant Christian Academy (CCA) in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to improve the utilization and safety of the facilities at the rear of the main building. The team worked with David Sonju, Headmaster at CCA and client representative for the school, to achieve two major goals for this project. The first goal was to redesign the rear parking lot to create a grass recreation area while integrating the remaining paved area into an improved student drop-off/turn-around. The design considered stormwater run-off and drainage, including conversion of impervious area to pervious area. The second goal was to design a portico/covered walkway structure that connects the rear entrance of the main building to the entrance of the Fine Arts Building. The design incorporates a combined straight and curvilinear steel-frame support structure, and a truss roof support system with steel decking. The team will provide its design work to CCA and their design consultant, H. Edward Black and Associates, Ltd., to finalize the required construction drawings and obtain professional approvals to build the project.https://mosaic.messiah.edu/engr2020/1019/thumbnail.jp
Prosthetic Knee
Amputations, specifically lower limb amputations, are common in Sub Saharan Africa and across the broader global community largely due to infection and disease. Our project, The Prosthetic Knee Team, partners with the orthopedic workshop at the CURE International Hospital in Kijabe, Kenya to create a prosthetic knee design for a specific type of amputation known as a Knee Disarticulation (also called through-knee). Currently, the orthopedic workshop is only able to provide one very expensive prosthetic knee option for these patients, and they often elect to undergo a second surgery, a trans-femoral amputation, because the cost of the second surgery and trans-femoral prosthesis combined is less than the currently available through-knee prosthetic. The goal of our project is to provide the orthopedic workshop with a manufacturable prosthetic knee design that provides through-knee amputees with a cheaper prosthetic option and removes the need to have a second amputation above the knee. Throughout the past two semesters, our focus was on organizing collected data, researching knee-disarticulations, and communicating with our client to more fully understand the scope of our project. After determining that moving forward our project will be manufacturing the prosthetic knees at Messiah College’s machine shop and shipping them to CURE Kenya to be fit on patients, we began to brainstorm potential design ideas. We are presently working on modifying and improving our chosen design to best meet all of the specifications laid out by our partner. Quantifying HIV-1 Viral Load with Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy
The DVD team is working to develop a cost-effective technique for measuring HIV load in resource-restricted regions. Our client is Dr Phil Thuma and the Macha Research Centre in Zambia. Our design utilizes a fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) approach, including a protein-engineered probe, custom optics, a field programmable gate array (FPGA), and a graphical display to assess viral load in a patient blood sample. In this talk we will present on the design and testing of our optical FCS system, the method of processing and analyzing the signal, and creation of the user interface display. Harrisburg, the city beautiful: Recasting the history of urban reform in a small American capital

Wilson published an important essay in Pennsylvania History that defined Harrisburg\u27s City Beautiful movement as “successful.” In his analysis, reformers galvanized citizens to vote for civic betterment. A package of amenities-pavements, clean water, drainage, and parks-improved the state capital. On this fortieth anniversary of Wilson\u27s publication, in a year commemorating significant federal amendments granting suffrage to African American men (1870) and women (1920), this special issue takes a closer look at early twentieth-century Harrisburg, its “successful” movement for urban reform, and the clear and consequential losses. This particular article highlights recent scholarship on Harrisburg; new studies of the Old Eighth Ward; novel geospatial and demographic datasets; and exciting public history projects that reclaim forgotten voices. While not a definitive answer to understanding Harrisburg\u27s City Beautiful movement, this issue is a case study in how historians can recast locally significant problems in Pennsylvania history
