Prosthetic Knee
Amputations, specifically lower limb amputations, are common in Sub Saharan Africa and across the broader global community largely due to infection and disease. Our project, The Prosthetic Knee Team, partners with the orthopedic workshop at the CURE International Hospital in Kijabe, Kenya to create a prosthetic knee design for a specific type of amputation known as a Knee Disarticulation (also called through-knee). Currently, the orthopedic workshop is only able to provide one very expensive prosthetic knee option for these patients, and they often elect to undergo a second surgery, a trans-femoral amputation, because the cost of the second surgery and trans-femoral prosthesis combined is less than the currently available through-knee prosthetic. The goal of our project is to provide the orthopedic workshop with a manufacturable prosthetic knee design that provides through-knee amputees with a cheaper prosthetic option and removes the need to have a second amputation above the knee. Throughout the past two semesters, our focus was on organizing collected data, researching knee-disarticulations, and communicating with our client to more fully understand the scope of our project. After determining that moving forward our project will be manufacturing the prosthetic knees at Messiah College’s machine shop and shipping them to CURE Kenya to be fit on patients, we began to brainstorm potential design ideas. We are presently working on modifying and improving our chosen design to best meet all of the specifications laid out by our partner. Quantifying HIV-1 Viral Load with Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy
The DVD team is working to develop a cost-effective technique for measuring HIV load in resource-restricted regions. Our client is Dr Phil Thuma and the Macha Research Centre in Zambia. Our design utilizes a fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) approach, including a protein-engineered probe, custom optics, a field programmable gate array (FPGA), and a graphical display to assess viral load in a patient blood sample. In this talk we will present on the design and testing of our optical FCS system, the method of processing and analyzing the signal, and creation of the user interface display. Harrisburg, the city beautiful: Recasting the history of urban reform in a small American capital
Copyright © 2020 The Pennsylvania Historical Association In 1980 William H. Wilson published an important essay in Pennsylvania History that defined Harrisburg\u27s City Beautiful movement as “successful.” In his analysis, reformers galvanized citizens to vote for civic betterment. A package of amenities-pavements, clean water, drainage, and parks-improved the state capital. On this fortieth anniversary of Wilson\u27s publication, in a year commemorating significant federal amendments granting suffrage to African American men (1870) and women (1920), this special issue takes a closer look at early twentieth-century Harrisburg, its “successful” movement for urban reform, and the clear and consequential losses. This particular article highlights recent scholarship on Harrisburg; new studies of the Old Eighth Ward; novel geospatial and demographic datasets; and exciting public history projects that reclaim forgotten voices. While not a definitive answer to understanding Harrisburg\u27s City Beautiful movement, this issue is a case study in how historians can recast locally significant problems in Pennsylvania history
The Phenomenon of the Adventure Education Classroom
Adventure Education classes provide unique classroom environments. This study explores what factors contribute to this extraordinary learning environment apparent in Adventure Education classes, based on the results of a heuristic inquiry. The conceptual framework of this study was based on the College and University Classroom Environment Inventory (CUCEI). The methodology utilized for this study involved a case study approach that investigated Adventure Education activity courses through classroom observation, interviews, and reflections on personal experience. The results of the study indicated that four dimensions of learning environment that are particularly significant in Adventure Education classrooms are Personalization, Student Cohesiveness, Innovation, and Intrapersonal Attentiveness. Distinct themes emerged within each of these dimensions. The implications of these findings are significant for cultivating spaces conducive to learning, whether in college classrooms, youth groups, or other settings. Other educators can seek to nurture the dynamics evident in Adventure Education classrooms in their own learning spaces

It was always a quick turnaround. The Army has a funny habit of doing that (though my mother would disagree on the choice of adjective here). We’d stay in one place for a few years, usually no more than two, and then the Army would ship my dad off to his next duty station. We always went with him. Since I was born in Monterey Bay, California, my family had moved three times: first to Fort Leavenworth, Kansas (two years), then Fort Hood, Texas (three years, where my brother was born, the longest time we’d ever lived in one place), and then to Fort Polk, Louisiana (“home of hicks and crawfish”--my mother). In April of 2006, it was time to make my fourth move in seven years of life

When the living room window beside her mother’s antique owl lamp shattered, she knew that the sun must be setting – and that she had forgotten to turn off the lamp before its glow escaped the boundary of her home.
