Finding Home: (Re)thinking Identity through Texts as a Queer, White Woman

    Get PDF
Within these four sections, I decided, for the purposes of this project, to focus on my interactions with Borderlands/La Frontera by Gloria Anzaldúa; Passing by Nella Larsen; Sister, Outsider by Audre Lorde; and Not Vanishing by Chrystos. Anzaldúa’s work focuses on her identity as a queer, Chicana woman inhabiting the U.S.-Mexico border. Passing details the experiences of a Black woman who can pass as white. Lorde’s work is a collection of essays which center her experience as a queer, Black woman. Chrystos’s work is a book of poetry centered in their queer, Two Spirit, Indigenous identity. Additionally, I draw from Edwidge Danticat’s Create Dangerously by writing in a style similar to hers, one which blends the academic and personal, as well as drawing inspiration from her idea of returning to “origin stories” through texts....Throughout my project, I combine literary analysis and close reading with personal narrative and reflection

Speaking in Two Worlds: Exploring the Roles of Spanish-English Bilingualism in the Lives of Adults Bilingual in Spanish and English in South Central Pennsylvania Spanish-English bilingualism is an established and growing phenomenon in South Central Pennsylvania in the United States. But, there is a lack of linguistic studies on Spanish-English bilingualism in this geographic area. This essay attempts to explore the different roles that Spanish-English bilingualism occupies in the lives of bilingual adults who speak Spanish and English in South Central Pennsylvania. Using the qualitative semi-structured interview method, I interviewed twenty bilingual participants in South Central Pennsylvania who are native speakers or heritage speakers of Spanish. I did an analysis of the interviews to isolate common themes. In this study, I used established theories and qualitative studies of bilingualism to contextualize interviewees\u27 responses regarding their perspectives toward Spanish-English bilingualism and what being bilingual means in their lives.

A First Time Foster Parent Guide to Behavior and Trauma

    No full text
With several children entering the foster care system yearly, and due to their past experiences, foster children are at a higher risk to have emotional, mental health, and behavioral needs. Although research about behavior and trauma are constantly emerging, there is a need for specific education on these topics. Within the foster care system, stressors are constantly affecting children whether it is biological or environmental. The stressors that are presented to the children directly influence the foster parents. Thus, creating a greater risk for foster parents who are uneducated in these specific fields. Additionally, it was found that the environment in which a child is from can impact their behavior. For instance, if the family of origin allowed a behavior, then the child might think that behavior is acceptable everywhere. A great point of concern in foster families was their feelings of being unequipped to deal with behaviors. When researching the high burn out rate amongst the foster parents, many parents admitted that felt as if they needed more preparation for behavioral and trauma-based care. Foster parents who were given more extensive education and more coping strategies found that they were more prepared to serve. Due to this, a program needs to be created that addresses behavior and trauma. That is the reason that this program was created. There was a clear need that needed to be met

Innate Longing for Connection: A Biopsychological View of Spiritual Longing Mediated by Oxytocin

    Get PDF
Humans have an innate longing for connection with someone or something. Upon analysis of current literature, it was found that this longing correlates with biological and psychological pathways that influence human behavior. Among many factors, the hormone, oxytocin (OT), contributes to these systems and even mediates or buffers them. The effects of OT are evidenced by bonds formed with caregivers, romantic partners, God, and at times harmful substances. The onset and severity of mental illnesses are also partially impacted by this human need for social support and connection. After reviewing and analyzing literature from many domains, this internal hardwiring suggests a significance or purpose in the human makeup, more succinctly: Divine Creation. Biopsychological mechanisms—mediated in part by OT—and the resulting behaviors or psychological disorders demonstrate the human need for connection and potentially union or relationship with an ultimate, satisfying source, which is found in God. This paper seeks to illuminate pathways that contribute to our longing for connection, which ultimately reflect the purpose of human creation: to be in relationship with others and God
