Village Water Ozonation System
The Village Water Ozonation System (VWOS) team’s core mission statement is to provide economically sustainable and culturally sensitive drinking water solutions for communities, to empower communities with the ability to properly maintain their drinking water supply, and to transform people’s lives by decreasing the occurrences of waterborne diseases.
Currently, the VWOS team is partnering with Friends in Action to design and implement two drinking water treatment systems for the community living on Rama Cay, an island in the Bluefields Lagoon on the eastern coastline of Nicaragua. The wells on the island are contaminated with E. coli and other bacteria and contain high levels of salt that cause the water to be unhealthy, distasteful, and corrosive to metal equipment in the system. The team hopes to design a system that will disinfect the water, remove salinity from the well water with a safe and efficient disposal of all byproducts, and decrease corrosion agents.
VWOS is partnering with Forward Edge International for the third time (Nicaragua 2009 and Mexico 2016) to design water treatment systems for communities in Oaxaca, Mexico and Kijabe, Kenya. The system for Oaxaca is ready for implementation and awaits availability to travel. The system for Kijabe is in the initial stage of communicating with the client on specifics for the design.https://mosaic.messiah.edu/engr2021/1018/thumbnail.jp
From a Scientist to Her Parents
The following is a letter I sent to my parents after we found out they would be eligible for one of the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines in December. They have always refused the flu shot (even this year) and, at the time, planned to refuse the COVID-19 vaccine as well. My parents carefully considered the information and continued to ask questions over the holidays. I am ecstatic and relieved to report that they have received their second dose, and had only injection site tenderness and mild achiness

Raising the Dead: Myths and Their Retellings
I found myself wondering, What would that be like? What would it be like to take the events that formed the hero, and delve into the psychology of the figure, give you something to really connect with, despite the ever-widening gap of time? What would it be like to be the son of Zeus, greatest of men, living in ancient Greece, struggling to survive? I wanted to become this bridge, to connect our world to the ancient one. As this project began to develop, my thought leapt to other myths. How would it feel to be the Norse god Odin, who ripped out his own eye and hung himself, only to delay the inevitable end of the world? How would it feel to be the Greek goddess Isis, forced to watch the murder of your husband, binding together his mutilated corpse and forced to be apart from him as he ruled the Afterlife? How could I make a modern reader truly connect to an ancient deity? These stories are all hallmarks of their respective cultures. Thus, while I wanted to tell a story to which someone can connect, I also wanted to honor the intentionality of these cultures

Improving Onboarding and Role Transition for Advanced Practice Providers
BACKGROUND: APPs are increasingly being integrated into various health care settings and the role continues to gain popularity and utility as a solution to the shortage of physicians. Successful onboarding of APPs has been identified as an important factor in the role transition and integration of APPs into their team and organization.
PROBLEM: When hired, APPs are often not onboarded successfully to the detriment of the provider and the organization. Despite the evidence for comprehensive onboarding programs, APPs continue to receive insufficient onboarding that ignores their unique scope of practice.
METHOD: The Ottawa Model of Research Use, a knowledge translation model, was used to guide this project and Meleis’ transitions theory provided a theoretical framework. An exhaustive literature review was performed with 17 full-text articles being critically appraised.
INTERVENTION: Participants completed an orientation and role transition survey based on their previous onboarding experience. The same group then reviewed a proposed orientation toolkit. The participants completed the same survey after their review to reflect on the potential impact of the toolkit. Statistical analysis was performed on the data obtained from the surveys.
RESULTS: The total scores between the baseline and follow-up surveys were statistically and clinically significant. Overall, the participants perceived that the new onboarding toolkit would improve transition into practice and integration into their organization.
CONCLUSION: Evidence supports comprehensive onboarding programs for improving role transitions for APPs. The survey results from this project support the existing literature and may provide the foundation for a pilot onboarding program at the project site
