Improving Postpartum Depression Literacy: A Quality Improvement Initiative
Get PDFBackground: Postpartum depression (PPD) is associated with increased healthcare costs, decreased levels of productivity, and negative patient outcomes, collectively affecting babies, women, and society. Women are at an increased risk for mortality and morbidity if postpartum depression is left untreated. Postpartum depression literacy improves patient outcomes.
Problem: Women may fail to effectively recognize the signs and symptoms of postpartum depression, due to inadequate postpartum education and lower health literacy levels.
Methods: A formalized postpartum depression education program was implemented online to mothers attending a postpartum adjustment support group in the spring of 2022 and compared to usual postpartum depression education. A structured or formalized postpartum depression education program consists of the implementation of a premeditated plan, in which the topics of postpartum depression, self-care, and social support are discussed in an effective and timely manner.
Intervention: Three PPD education sessions were presented by the project leader and were repeated once, in which participants needed to attend three out of the six sessions.
Results: After completion of educational sessions, there was a statistically significant difference in pre-and and post-test postpartum depression literacy scores (Mdn=150 vs. 126, respectively, p= .018).
Conclusion: This project resulted in an increase in postpartum depression literacy scores, which reinforces the recommendation for the implementation of a formalized postpartum depression education program

Relationship Between Self-Esteem and Athletic Participation
Get PDFThe purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between one’s participation in athletics and levels of self-esteem. Researchers wanted to examine if a person’s participation in competitive sports led to higher levels of self-esteem as opposed to those who do not participate in organized or competitive sports. Participants were found using convenience sampling exclusively on the campus of a religiously affiliated university. A survey was created electronically using the program Qualtrics. The survey measured athletic participation by asking participants how many competitive sports they were participants of. Self-esteem was measured using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. A sample of 98 total surveys were used from the surveys completed (no sports = 28; one sport = 55; two sports = 10; three sports = 1; four or more sports = 4) and the data were analyzed using SPSS. The mean score on the self-esteem scale was 36.82 (SD=5.93). For the sports participation scale it was 1.96 (SD=0.90). Results indicate a moderate positive correlation was found between the two variables, r (98) = .330, p \u3c .001 supporting the hypothesis that there is a positive correlation between athletic participation and self-esteem. One of the limitations of this study is that its sample was taken exclusively from one religiously affiliated university which is not representative of the entire population of college students or athletes. However, future studies done using participants of religiously affiliated institutions may explore the impact religious beliefs have on self-esteem

Rapid Orthotics for CURE Kenya - Mechanical Design and Official Testing of 3D Printed Sockets
Get PDFRapid Orthotics for Cure Kenya (ROCK) collaborates with CURE, a non-profit orthopedic workshop in Kjabe, Kenya, to implement a 3D printing system for manufacturing custom prosthetics and orthotics. The goal is to reduce the production time and cost for the current transtibial sockets being manufactured in the orthotic workshop to give the patients a way to integrate into society and reduce stigma from their communities. The team designed a system for manufacturing transtibial sockets by converting a scan of the residual limb to a digital file customized by the orthopedic technicians and converted to a file to be 3D printed. The team designed a procedure to ensure the safety of the sockets within the constraints and offsets of the ISO 10328 Standard. The standard requires twelve official tests specifying the type and conditions to be conducted for the Ultimate Strength and Static Proof tests. The team has designed a testing rig that interfaces with the Materials Testing System machine at Messiah University to apply the necessary forces according to the complex geometry outlined in the standard. Additionally, research has determined the optimized 3D printing settings to increase the quality and consistency of the sockets. To smoothly institute the system developed in the orthopedic workshop, the team has developed a Training Manual outlining the step-by-step procedure for the system. Using this system, the team completed all twelve tests with a passing socket result which will contribute to determining the steps for next semester and for the summer site team trip.
