Masculinity, Male Friendship, and Same-Sex Interactions in 18th Century America: The Relationship of Alexander Hamilton and John Laurens
Get PDFAmidst the great political change of eighteenth-century America, the concepts of gender and sexuality were brought into new conversation surrounding the Revolution and the new nation. The shifting understandings of gender and sexuality, especially masculinity and male sexuality, were integral to society in both the public and private sphere. One of the unique facets within these sociocultural changes was the heroic friendship, an intimate friendship between two young men built upon the values of the early American public sphere--civic virtue, intellect, and status, to name a few. The debate lies in if the heroic friendship should be included as a valid category in the history of homosexuality; using the relationship of Alexander Hamilton and John Laurens, a case can be made that the heroic friendship blurs the lines of platonic male love and therefore should be considered an important element in the history of same-sex sexuality

High Quality, Low Cost Egg Incubator for BIC Church in Choma, Zambia
Get PDFThe Egg Incubator team is partnering with the Brethren in Christ Church located in Choma, Zambia to design a high-quality, low-cost chicken egg incubator to supply the pastors and church members with a means of food and income. The design will need to take into account the accessibility and cost of the tools and materials. The current prototype features separate heating and humidity systems, a control system to maintain a set temperature and humidity, and tilting egg racks. The heating system consists of two stovetop coils to produce heat and a fan to transfer it to the air. The humidifier utilizes an atomizer in a pan of water to create a mist that mixes with the hot air to create humidity. The control system uses a proportional integral derivative controller (PID) to keep the temperature at 37 ± 1 °C and the humidity at 60–70%. The egg racks are tilted by a motor that runs every 6 hours to prevent the embryos from sticking to the shell. With a fully functioning prototype, the team has begun to incubate 60 real fertilized eggs. During the 21-day incubation process, a final prototype iteration is being designed and will be built on-site in Zambia in May 2022.

Get PDF• Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) encompasses varying degrees of pathologies associated with dysfunction, pain, and derangement of the surrounding musculature of the joint and muscles of mastication.
• Major source of chronic orofacial pain that interferes in activities of daily living and can lead to psychological factors such as anxiety, depression, and social factors
• Anatomical positioning of the TMJ with the cervical spine has led researchers towards investigating association between the two regions.
• Associated with headaches, ear-aches, and cervical posture.
• Manipulations to the spine have been widely accepted as a treatment intervention for decreasing pain and improving function/mobility in multiple areas of the body.
• If regional interdependence exists between the two regions, then cervical spine mobilization and exercise may be able to provide symptomatic relief.
Purpose: To investigate the effects on the reduction of pain and MMO using cervical spine mobilization and exercise compared to only using manual therapy for temporomandibular joint pain

Christianity, Feminism, and Identity Development in Christian Higher Education
Get PDFIdentity formation acts as an important part of human development. At the same time, some difficulty occurs when a person attempts to hold two identities that seemingly contradict. For those that identify as both feminists and Christians, this dilemma creates difficulties. As these two identity camps have been on opposing ends of a variety of issues for years, some may even feel unable to claim both of these labels simultaneously. At the same time, some can hold the values of each even as they reject the identity labels. The context of higher education provides students with an environment where they can explore nuances and different belief and value systems. The four-year period of development often pushes students outside of their parents’ ways of thought. At the same time, identity foreclosed students may end up even firmer in their pre-college identities. Though they aim to provide students with similar levels of exposure to prevalent issues of the day, private Christian universities hold a specific set of values and beliefs. In the case of feminism, this topic may not be developed in students of these universities, due to the apparent contradictions between the two identities. This study seeks to uncover if Christian college students hold the identities of feminist and Christian, how language creates this dual identity, and if the Christian college environment provides roadblocks to this identity formation

Who gets to be a hero? In the story I know, the hero slays the villain and saves the innocent and helpless victim. Is that the story you’ve heard too? Sometimes reality seems this clear cut—there are good guys and bad guys. The most obvious historical example of this for many Americans is Hitler and the Holocaust. Indeed, WWII has come to be known as the “Good War” due to its seeming lack of moral ambiguity. However, even in the Good War, there were those who refused to fight—conscientious objectors. In this episode we will lean into the difficult question of proper wartime response through the lens of conscientious objection in the small denomination of the Church of the Brethren. While we won’t find easy answers, we will explore the limits of a democracy’s ability to allow dissenting opinions, America’s hypocritical claim to be a champion of freedom, and the role of Christians in a militaristic and nationalistic world. So, here we go.
The Church of the Brethren is a denomination with 100,000 members in the US and many more around the world that traces its roots to 1708 in Germany where it was founded by Alexander Mack. Many Brethren immigrated to America in search of religious tolerance as they faced intense persecution in Europe due to their belief in adult baptism
