Liturgy of the Dispersed: Memory, Transnationalism, and Cambodian Cuisine in the American Diaspora
Get PDFThis study addresses Cambodian diasporic cuisine in the United States, recognizing cuisine as a way for Cambodians to maintain transnational ties in the era of mounting globalization. It is rooted in anthropologist Arjun Appadurai’s theories on imagination, culturalism, and globalization. Using purposive sampling and the grounded theory approach, this study compares 25 pre-diaspora recipes to 25 diaspora recipes, and assesses changes in ingredients, cooking methods, and cultural or historical notes, respectively. Major findings in diasporic recipes, in comparison to pre-diasporic recipes, includes more leniency in ingredients used, stricter instructions on cooking methods, and greater nostalgia for the homeland

Pure Essential Oil vs. Blend: Word Recall Memory Strategies
Get PDFThe purpose of this study was to test the effects of aroma on word recall and determine how aroma interacts with the memory strategy used in a paired-word associative memory task. Twenty-nine undergraduates were randomly assigned to a room diffusing either Doterra essential oil blend Motivate or pure peppermint essential oil. Students memorized a list of 20 word-pairs using either repetitive or elaborative rehearsal. Following a delay, students recalled the second word in the pair after being given the first word as a prompt. Participants using the elaboration memory strategy recalled more words than those using the repetition memory strategy. This research may be helpful to consumers or students seeking to understand if any particular essential oil or oil blend facilitates cognitive functioning. Future research could compare several different aroma blends to see if they improve specific types of memory tasks
Kenbrook Bridge Project
Get PDFThe Kenbrook Bridge Team seeks to address Kenbrook Bible Camp’s need for maintenance and emergency access across a small stream on the property that separates their main office location from cabins on the northwestern portion of the campus. Kenbrook Bible Camp\u27s mission is to facilitate a closer connection to God, self, others, and nature for all guests. The bridge site was selected by the Kenbrook staff based on the greatest need for accessibility. An existing footbridge in this location cannot support passage of heavy equipment used for camp maintenance nor the ATV used for emergency response. The bridge team proposes a 16-foot-long by 8-foot-wide concrete culvert for the site. The culvert has been designed in compliance with AASHTO structural requirements and all elements of the structure are detailed in a complete drawings sheet set, serving as a reference for on-site construction in May.
