It’s a commonplace thing, 
Working for money to afford youth, 
To afford the rights of passage, 
Growing responsibilities, 
And changing identity.
 It’s a routine – 
A mind-draining, mind-less process
Holding doors, 
Smiling, 
Raised pitch of the voice. 
But then, 
A passing stranger gives a thank you 
Attached 
To such a simple thing as your name. 
There is a small, surprising tug 
At the corners of your mouth 
And the artificial smile becomes a little bit 
More, 
And a spark goes off in a cluster of neurons, 
And the mediocrity of the routine is suddenly 
Carried 
With a warming sincerity.

my eyes heavy and head somewhere far from here.

the way moths used to sit on the screen of a window in my house under a light. 
a sense of dying and being reborn.

the foundation is made out of honey and spit, 
and the walls are held together by the string that attaches my skull to my shoulders. 
outside, there’s a pond with a never-ending depth that the ducks like to swim in.

type of friends who can’t read each other’s thoughts but know when it’s time to talk. 
one friend who talks more than the other. the other who sits and smiles, listening.

the way it invades your ribs and sets up a home in your chest. 
that the brain can see it, but the heart can’t. that no one can fill the void but yourself.

Mind a lassitude 
And body afree 
But two eyes wide

She can see 
Blistering azure! 
A mesmerism can she procure

Upon this knoll 
Beneath a night 
So lunar! 
Of the White Moon which lights her
Pale skin to glister 
Milk gold tresses glow brighter 
Turn mind torpor 
And passion to fever 
O Starry-eyes! 
Wonderstruck at the night skies! 
Docile is your guise! 
And Starry are your eyes! 
But no Earthly ties 
Bind your rise 
So Starry are your eyes! 
Hurry! 
Fly free before Sunrise 
Before morn, 
O you wonderful thing.

Why do babies cry when they’re born?
The answer only seems natural-
They are introduced to a new, scary world in which they have just created a dent, a new 
spot just for them. To make space is a frightening thing.
The world does not like to move for the uninitiated.
And yet, simultaneously, perhaps their screams are not merely to express their pain, their 
terror at the gaping maw of new life,
But to defy this world that pushes and shoves from the very start.
To say, YES! I’M HERE. I’M HERE. I’M HERE!
And I’m here for life.
   
I think I connect to babies in this way,
And perhaps that’s a silly notion?
But I wake up each day with a sharp intake of breath, as if God himself repeats Genesis 
each morning, as if I had not had breath in my nostrils before.
The occasional scream or shout erupts from my soul into dead space, slicing it’s way 
through the fog to break the membrane that forms around a sleeping world-
A long sprawl of my limbs, flinging arms and legs into the thick, unforgiving darkness 
around me to get used to being a person again.
I come into each day as if I am being born once more.
Maybe the shouts that accompany my awakening are there for a similar reason as babies.
Perhaps that’s not silly.
To remind the world that I am here.
I’M HERE.
I’M HERE.
I’M HERE!
And I’m here for life.
