Tell us about your journey up to this new position! 
Growing up in New Hampshire, I spent a lot of time outside helping my family
with our large vegetable garden and caring for our flock of chickens. Coming
to Messiah, then College, I did not have sustainability at the front of my mind,
but I cared a lot about how events of the past have impacted our current
realities. Given this interest, I started college as a History major, but through my
CCC class and having many friends who were Sustainability Studies majors, I
ended up making the switch by the start of my Sophomore year. As a
Sustainability Studies major with the Community Development concentration
and a Politics minor, I loved the idea of approaching all issues through the lens
of the triple bottom line – how do we work to make sure our actions are good
for people (particularly those who are often left out of important decisions),
good for the environment (both locally and globally), and economically viable.
After college, I moved to the Washington D.C. area and worked with a non-
profit called the National Park Trust. This organization functions both as a land
trust, helping National Parks preserve key portions of land that previously have
been privately held within their boarders or at their parameters, and runs
several programs aimed at providing access for kids to outdoor spaces,
particularly their local parks. I was part of their communications...(continued)

team, in part thanks to my previous experience as Engagement Coordinator in the Office of
Sustainability here at Messiah, and was able to have exposure to all aspects of their work. After a year
living in D.C., my then fiancé, now husband (also a Messiah alum), and I decided that we missed the
community and slower pace of life Central Pennsylvania had to offer. Upon moving back, I started
working in the Office of the Provost here at Messiah and loved the role because I got to help
administrate our internal governance system (a nerdy love of mine – governance structure). While this
was not specifically a “sustainability” related position, I have gotten to see how hard the people behind
the scenes here work and have gained a great appreciation for what it takes to keep an institution like
Messiah running – a type of sustainability in its own right. Throughout my time in the Office of the Provost,
almost three years now, I volunteered every Service Day in Grantham Garden and maintained a
relationship with Lori Chance and Brandon Hoover. When Lori told me she was leaving Messiah, she
encouraged me to apply for her position, given my background in Sustainability and love for the office.
 How did you hear about the position? What drew you to this role?
I heard about this position from Lori Chance. Lori, like for many other students/alumni, was my campus
mom and a huge part of my college experience. What makes me so excited about working in the Office
of Sustainability here at Messiah is that we are able to bring together our commitment to faith with a
love and care for our community and physical environment. I think this is a beautiful and wholistic image
of what Christian life should look like in every stage of life, but college is a particularly great time to start
building that foundation.
What are your goals/hopes for the Office? What do you hope to accomplish?
Over the past few years, there have been a lot of changes in the Office of Sustainability. My first goal is
to be working on our existing partnerships across campus so that we can continue to sustain the good
work the office already does. I want to ensure our Office is still a place where students can come to
learn and build skills that will support their future careers and lifestyles. From there, I hope to work with
students in the Office to develop a larger volunteer network on campus so that we can support more
initiatives in the future.
What excites you the most about working with students and with the Office of Sustainability?
I am excited by many things that come with working with students. One of the beautiful things about the
Office of Sustainability is that this is a place where students can bring their passions and ideas and
actually put them into practice. This energy is contagious (in a good way) and I look forward to fostering
this sort of environment and exploring the new initiatives students come up with.  
You previously worked in the Office as a student as the engagement coordinator. What
is it like now coming back in a different role? Did you ever think you’d come back to
work at the Office? 
When I was a student here at Messiah I worked in the Office of Sustainability for two years as
the Engagement Coordinator. I did not anticipate ever coming back to Messiah as an
employee, much less to the Office of Sustainability, but I am so glad it has worked out this
way. In some ways, coming back to this role has been like coming home. At the same time, it
has been wonderful to be able to shift my focus from all the ways I can engage with campus
to all the ways I can be supporting student engage with campus. I have enjoyed getting to
see and be part of all the things that go on behind the scenes here at Messiah, which has
mostly given me a greater appreciation for those who worked so hard to support me when I
was a student.
 
What are you most passionate or interested about in sustainability?
I became interested in sustainability initially because of how I saw it fit in so well with the
Christian faith. From Genesis 1, we see a responsibility given to people to care for God’s
creation and all throughout scripture we see a call to care for our neighbors. I believe
sustainability is a great way to pursue both callings. Outside of this, I have always been
fascinated by how things work on a big-picture level. When I daydream, its often wondering
about the full lifecycle of an item: Where did this item come from? What went into making it?
What is the impact of it existing in this space? Where will it end up? Will it ever turn into
something else? As Americans, we generally have access to an abundance of things, whether
they are the ones we want or not. As Christians, I think we should be finding out how these
things and their lifecycles impact our neighbors and the rest of God’s creation, locally and
globally. It is often complicated and messy, but a worthwhile endeavor nonetheless.
What are your hobbies/interests?
One of my favorite ways to spend my time is with people. I am not often the loudest person in
a group, but I enjoy opportunities to chat, play board games, and be outside with friends. I
currently go rock climbing (primarily indoor bouldering) on a weekly basis as a form of
exercise, an interest I picked up back when I was a student here at Messiah and really enjoy
being invested at our church.

Liturgies of Restoration: 4x4 Chapel

Week 1
This spring, the Office of Sustainability hosted a 4 x 4 chapel
series called, “Liturgies of Restoration”. As the engagement
coordinator for the office, I was asked if I would like to teach
the series. Though this opportunity was terrifying and very
much outside of my comfort zone, I jumped right in and
couldn’t be more glad that I did so. We were able to look
closer at how we can combine our offices’ values (from the 17
United Nations Sustainable Development Goals) along with
Biblical teachings and ethical thinking around caring for
God‘s creation while caring for ourselves and others. Learning
from the Au Sable Institute’s workbook, we also talked about
how liturgy in the Christian sense can be applied outside of
the church walls. 
 
I hope that those who joined me in this chapel series got as
much out of it as I did, and I look forward to doing more
things like this in the future!

Campus Race to Zero Waste is an eight
weeklong competition from February to March
that Messiah has the opportunity to
participate in. Our goal is to educate our
campus about waste and encourage students
and faculty to lower their waste consumption
by being mindful of their everyday habits.

There are a multitude of studies confirming that there are benefits to students when their parents are involved in their instrumental music education. The difficulty for teachers then is to find ways to help parents be more involved. In order for teachers to help parents get involved in the instrumental music program, teachers first need to know what some of the main motivators and barriers are that impact parental participation. Some of the most prevalent themes across current studies on this topic are financial commitment, time commitment, parental and student knowledge and goal setting abilities, parental value of music, help with at home practice, and parenting style. Because research has also shown that parental involvement decreases over time (Upitis, Abrami, Brook & King, 2017), the following discussion will be focused more on elementary level students with occasional mentions of older age levels since some students do start later than elementary school

   Back when I was in middle school, my father used to take us to Reading,
Pennsylvania where we would work on an old house. He was fixing it up
in order to sell it later, and he brought my sisters and I to help him with
the repairs. Every weekend, we would scrape muck off the ceiling, remove
carpets, and paint the walls. I hated doing it. The only part I ever really
liked was working on the tomato garden in the backyard. My father had
planted it on a whim, saying it would increase the property value.
Watching it grow, weekend after weekend, became my only reprieve from
all the labor. When summer came and the tomatoes started to ripen, I
began looking forward to counting all the tomatoes we would harvest.
    One day, while my father was driving me to my youth group, he told me
someone had been stealing from the garden. Immediately, I thought of
solutions to protect it. I first thought, let's make a sign telling them to keep
away, we could even build a fence, or put a lock on the garden door.
When I told him my ideas, he immediately brushed them aside. He told me
he already had a solution. He would put up a sign stating that the
tomatoes were free to take.
   At first I was confused because I couldn’t understand why he would do
that. It didn’t seem fair that someone could steal from us and his solution
was to give it away for free. When I asked him about it, he simply said, “It
doesn’t matter.” And then I asked, “What about us? They’re our
tomatoes. You shouldn’t be giving away what’s ours,” and he responded,
“We have more than enough to share.”
   This time, I felt a burning shame in my chest. Even if I didn’t know why
he was doing it, I knew that he was doing a good thing. I felt so
embarrassed for arguing against it, I wanted to walk away in shame, but I
was stuck in the car, so I just turned away. My father must have noticed
this, because he tried to explain by saying, “It won’t do any good to keep
food we don’t need away from hungry people. And even if they aren’t
hungry, at least they aren’t stealing anymore.” Of course, this made me
feel even worse, and I spent the rest of the car ride sulking.

   I knew he was trying to teach me something. To look further past
myself, past my family, and think more deeply about the world around
me. But at the time, all I could think about was how my father was a good
person, and I was not. 
   I thought I was good. I was nice, I was modest, I was humble. I was
everything I had been taught a good girl should be. But none of what I
was compared to the actions of my father. It seemed to come so easily to
him, to just go beyond what was expected and do something truly good.
For the longest time, I viewed being good as a passive thing. Instead of
good as something you do, I viewed good as something you just are. My
father’s actions made me realize that being good is a conscious and
practiced decision that we make. My father was a good man because he
made a practice out of being good. He tried to do it every day, and slowly
but surely, he was teaching me to do the same.

The Circulation Department at Murray Library is excited to welcome ten new student employees to the team: 
Tanya, Abigaile, Hannah, Arwyn, Raeghan, Caleb, Joshua, Diana, Jonathan, and Brianna. 
 
This year's annual dinner and public program will be held on Wednesday, November 5th from 6-8:30 p.m. in 
Hostetter Chapel, with dinner served by Two Bridges Catering.  Following dinner, we will hold a public program 
with keynote speaker,  Gregg Behr.  Gregg is an educational champion who hails from Pittsburgh, PA, where he 
was inspired by the life and work of Mr. Rogers.  In addition to serving as the Executive Director of the Grable 
Foundation, he is the founder of "Remake Learning", a vibrant and internationally acclaimed ecosystem of 
educators, artists, scientists, and makers.  Gregg is the co-author of When You Wonder, You're Learning, which is 
a refreshing read that draws deeply from the legacy of Mr. Rogers' infectious and unrelenting love of neighbors - 
especially in the sacred work of educating our children.  You won't want to miss this special evening!

These fantastic students completed two intensive days of 
training before beginning their roles and have shared their 
enthusiasm from day one. Under the guidance of Deb Roof, 
Keith Jones, and Rebecca Rosser, our new team members are 
already making a positive impact—helping the library operate 
smoothly for 86 hours each week. Whether they’re assisting 
patrons, troubleshooting photocopiers, checking out materials, 
or keeping our shelves in order, their focus on customer service 
and hospitality enriches the Murray Library experience. We’re 
grateful for the way they serve our Messiah community!

Murray Library was buzzing with energy on Friday, September 5 
during our Trivia Night! The evening was packed with intellectual 
camaraderie, spirited competition, and plenty of laughter. 
A huge shout-out goes to our incredible Events Committee team 
who made it all happen: Jenny, Rebecca, Tracy, Sarah, Liz, 
Rachael, and Janet. Special thanks also to our outstanding 
student workers—Maddie, Esther, Caleb, and Hannah—who 
kept everything running smoothly as scorekeepers. 
 
The highlight of the evening was our fantastic students! Their 
enthusiasm was off the charts, with 24 teams of 2–6 players 
 
teams who participated. The library plans many enriching and educational activities for students and the Messiah

there is a lot of history, anthropology, sociology, philosophy, and 
art behind these disciplines.” As an example, the old-fashioned 
stock and bond certificates are the work of talented artists who 
not only try to make the documents counterfeit-proof but also 
appeal to classical figures and to allegories in their vignettes. The 
goal of the exhibition is to give an appreciation of some of the 
lesser-known aspects of finance and encourage the viewer to 
come away seeing our financial institutions in a new way.

You’ve planted your seeds, watched them grow, and gained a
plentiful harvest. What’s next? Saving your seeds, of course! Keep
reading to learn the basics of seed saving!
The Seeds That Save Best
Open-pollinated plants such as heirloom varieties are the best
seeds for saving. Open-pollinated plants resemble their parent
plants, unlike cross-pollinated plants like hybrids that combine
traits of two different parents. Vegetables such as peas and
tomatoes and flowers such as marigolds and zinnias are examples
of seeds that save well.
Harvesting and Processing 
Collect seeds from plants that look the healthiest and have
desirable traits. Pick seeds that have reached peak maturity and
ripeness, and dry them as soon as possible.  There are two main
methods of cleaning seeds: wet and dry. Wet processing is for
plants that are embedded in the flesh of the fruit. Dry processing is
for plants in pods or a husk. These should be left to dry fully on the
plant. Other plants should be left to dry on materials like
newspapers and paper plates. After this processing, seeds should
be separated from non-seed material through threshing,
winnowing, and screening. 
Storing
After seeds are cleaned, dried, and
processed, storage varies from using
envelopes, glass jars, or even plastic
bags. Some suggest placing an amount of
silica gel in these storage containers with
the seeds. These containers should be
labeled with the date and variety of
plant. Store this container in a cool, dry
place until needed or donate your seeds
to the Seed Library. At this time, the
Seed library does not accept cross-
pollinated seeds, but will accept hybrid
seeds that are commercially packaged.
