The Songbird
There came a sudden whoosh of wind from the chilled night air. Her tiny little birdy body gave a shiver as she ruffled the feathers that would soon learn flight that the others so often did..
Supporting Student Success in Information Literacy and Writing Skills
Information literacy is more important than ever as students’ information sources rapidly expand and change. Fortunately, Messiah has numerous resources to support instructors and students in cutting through the clutter and improving writing. In this workshop we will discuss those supports as well as resources that can be applied to a wide array of writing assignments. Particularly, ways to scaffold information literacy initiatives with the help of online and library based tools. This workshop is facilitated by Brooke Dunbar-Treadwell, Director of Writing and Senior Lecturer of English and Beth Transue, Information Literacy Librarian
A case study of an English Teacher in Ukraine: Where gender and national identity intersect
Using a transnational intersectionality framework that focuses on the interactions of multiple identities, this article reexamines the study conducted in 2017 on the experiences of one female in-service English language teacher in the Ukrainian context. Employing a narrative inquiry approach, using an online autobiography, interviews, and lesson materials, Irene\u27s multiple identities have intertwined with her gendered identity, shaping her experiences. This study\u27s findings show that Irene\u27s transnational gendered identity was influenced by her educational and professional paths, her position in the language teaching field, and various social identities. Irene used language strategically and negotiated power relations professionally to navigate her transition to becoming a transnational English language teacher. Moreover, she found a complex relationship between a teacher\u27s gender and identity, which is related to the sociopolitical situation in Ukraine. The study aims to address the gap in the research on constructing a Ukrainian teacher\u27s gendered identity. While a case study approach is not generalizable or applicable to other teachers, exploring Irene\u27s narratives provides valuable insights into the complexities of identity and power dynamics within a transnational educational context
Program Notes Recital: Choral (MUAP 622 RC)
George Frideric Handel
Georg Fredrich Handel was born in 1685 in Halle Germany. From an early age, he received an education in music theory, harpsichord, organ, violin, and oboe. When he was seventeen, he enrolled at Halle University and took on a position as the organist for the local Calvinist cathedral, Domkirche. Handel’s growing interest in opera led him to study abroad in Italy between 1706 and 1710, during which time he composed several operas which varied in their reception and popularity.[1]
