Happy Retirement, Jamie Rice! 
In January, Jamie Rice, Processing Technician, retired from Murray Library after 13 years of 
faithful and dedicated service. Jamie started working for Messiah 19 years ago in the Mail 
Room where her work ethic got her noticed and she soon moved to working for Textbook 
Express in the Bookstore. When the job at the library opened, she told us this was her dream 
job. And we are so glad! Jamie’s creativity, problem-solving ability, and constant desire to keep 
busy, blessed us and all who entered the library. Her smile and can-do attitude will be most 
certainly missed here but we look forward to her stopping in time to time to fill us in on all the 
adventures she and Michael have been on. Godspeed in your retirement, Jamie!

Women of the Civil Rights Movement Display 
Many women played important roles in the Civil Rights 
Movement, from leading local civil rights organizations to 
serving as lawyers on school segregation lawsuits. Their 
efforts to lead the movement were often overshadowed by 
men, who still get more attention and credit for its successes 
in popular historical narratives and 
commemorations.  Many women experienced gender 
discrimination and sexual harassment within the movement 
and later turned towards the feminist movement in the 
1970s. In January and February, we highlight the women 
who fought hard for justice and equality in our country.  
Trivia Night Recap 
The Murray Library kicked off the spring semester by 
hosting a wildly successful Trivia Night on Friday, 
January 19.  Snow couldn’t keep these quizzers from 
an evening filled with intellectual camaraderie, fierce 
competition, and, of course, a whole lot of fun! 
The library welcomed 20 teams of 2-6 players each, 
which brought our total to an astounding 94 
attendees! This level of engagement underscores the 
spirit that our students bring to every campus event.  
We are pleased to announce the top three teams that emerged victorious: 
1. First Place: Jeopardy Rejects: Emily Bell, Sarah Lee Meeks, Ethan, William Reed, Abi 
Entwistle  
2. Second Place: Mountain View Basement: Ryan Quinn, Kyle Wilcox, Ken Friedmann,

3. Third Place:  Sauce and the Dressings: Justin Gagliardo, Ezra Miller, Charlie Jones,

Artistic Additions Beautify Murray Library 
The Murray Library spaces now feature captivating new artworks that enhance and inspire. 
A Celebration of Diversity in Reading: Lining the wall near the 
B section and University/BIC Archives, explore images of diverse 
readers from various cultures and centuries. These visual 
representations celebrate the universality of the reading experience. 
All images are open access and free to reproduce from museums 
around the world. 
Artists Books Room: Witness a kaleidoscope of creativity in the 
Artists Books Room. The newly created images on the walls 
redefine our perception of what constitutes a book. These framed 
representations of artists books showcase the imagination of artists 
and the unconventional mediums used. Over 300 works are 
available upon request for viewing.  
Nurturing Creativity in Young Minds: The walls near the 
juvenile section now showcase prints from The Mysteries of Harris 
Burdick by Chris Van Allsburg, renowned author of The Polar 
Express and Jumanji. Intended to spark creative thinking and 
writing in young readers, these wordless illustrations invite you to 
embark on imaginative journeys inspired by Van Allsburg's world. 
The mysterious plot lets you generate the next great story. 
We extend appreciation to Jamie Rice, Kimberly Steiner, Bern Sandoval, and Sarah Myers for 
their efforts to create, select, and hang these creative additions. Next time you visit the library,

    Have you checked out the Bridge to Freedom 
Children's Collection?  This collection includes 
educational resources for children (and adults!) 
grounded in the Civil Rights Movement but 
inclusive of other diverse historical experiences in 
the ongoing struggle for equality, freedom, 
justice, and reconciliation. Check out the books, 
the library’s theme room, and the artwork on 
the walls! This collection was established 
with the generous donation of 133 children's 
books from Dr. Todd, Lonette, and Bryce Allen

UPDATED PLANT HARDINESS ZONE MAP 
         
 
For the first time since 2012, the USDA 
has updated its plant hardiness zone 
map. The new map contains more 
detail, incorporating data from almost 
double the weather stations as the 
2012 map. The averages of the lowest 
annual winter temperatures for 
various locations over the span of the 
past 30 years have been pulled from 
these weather stations to determine 
the zones displayed on the map. 
Similar to the 2012 map, there are 13 
zones each broken into half zones. 
The 2023 map shows that many areas 
of the US have shifted to the next 
warmer half zone. Grantham is no 
exception to this trend. We moved 
from hardiness zone 6b in 2012 to 
hardiness zone 7a. Be aware of this 
change when you begin to plan your 
garden this year!

Dear Reader, 
I am a firm believer that reading is fundamental to and irrevocably shapes
our lives. Virginia Woolf, one of the great British modernist writers,
argues that when we read, we “extend our intercourse beyond our own
time and province” (“Montaigne” 64) and that we “have not finished
with” a poem, essay or novel “because [we] have read it, any more than
friendship is ended because it is time to part” (“The Modern Essay” 217).
Poems, stories, photographs, paintings—these works of art become our
friends and a means by which we make sense of the world. And when we
create written or visual art, we utilize the creativity that springs from our
status as beings made in the image of our Creator. 
It is a delight to share this year’s edition of The Peregrine Review with
you. As you read these pages, my prayer is that you find art that becomes
your friend and enables you to explore worlds outside of your own.

Petals sing and petals dance,

Drifting in ones, twos, and threes, 
They swirl around in the airy breeze.
Across the open sky they float,
Far from us and so remote.
Petals fall and petals fade, 
And gently on the ground are laid 
Beautiful shades of pink and white, 
They dance in the sky, bathed in light.
Tossed in the wind like butterflies,
They seem most beautiful to mine eyes.
Yet they always plummet and can't be found, 
Until I look upon the ground.
Petals wilt and petals cry.
As spring goes on the blossoms die.
They rain on the world like crystal tears, 
Falling through time and throughout the years.
When I am filled with endless grief, 
They comfort me and bring relief.
As the countless days drag on and on, 
I see them crumble, until all are gone.

a flickering light blinks above
my phone screams midnight
as I prop my leg up on a plastic white shelf
I didn’t want to do this tonight
because I’m lazy—
or defiant—
or something else—
who knows.
but I have the razor
rusty though it may be
and the sickly sweet shaving cream stares me down
in its hot pink bottle: made for women just like me!
so! why not?
I try to go slowly
(DON’T shave your ankles, mom told me. you’ll nick yourself and your hair is
already light, nobody will notice)
but I’m impatient and so is that razor
I really should have thrown it out a week ago
shouldn’t I have?
it glides across my skin with inconsequential ease
slicing through the thick foam of gel that smells like dying flowers and femininity
it creates little globular patterns on my unevenly fuzzy legs
and I distract myself with the mumbling commentary in my head...
I think I’m almost done with the left when I notice a bead of red on that stupid
pink blade—$10 for a pack of four.
I let out a groan as my ankle runs red.
mom was right.
I hope it doesn’t stain my grandmother’s dressing robe.
