Effects of different elevation levels on carrion fly species composition

The species diversity of carrion flies at two elevation levels were explored. Five pieces of chicken thighs were placed on the ground and on the roof of the Dorothy Westerman Natural Sciences Center at Northern Kentucky University. Observations were taken on the developmental history of the flies that were subsequently reared. After adults emerged, the flies were killed, pinned, and identified to species. Statistical Modelling of Statin Use and Traits Among Participants with High Lipid Levels

Participants were split into case groups (elevated cholesterol) and a control group (normal level). Logistic regression, a statistical method to estimate prevalence of a binary outcome variable, was used to analyze the prevalence of statin use while adjusting for various factors such as comorbidities, smoking status, insurance carrier, age group and hospital network affiliation, along with the groups (case vs. control) to which participants belonged. Immigrant Generations in Home Leaving: Do Parents and Peers Matter?
No full text2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationHome leaving is a normative behavior for young adults in the US, likely shaped by peers and parents in adolescence. However, immigrant parents are less supportive of home leaving. Using the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (N= 4,882), this study investigated whether these social supports matters in home leaving across immigrant generations. Findings suggest that later generations are more likely to leave home. Little difference was detected between first- and second-generation when considering the social supports, thus the influence of peers and parents does not appear to explain generational differences in home leaving.https://youtu.be/kQ7bo7LPIi
The Effects of Substance Abuse and Barriers to Treatment for NKU Students

This study examines the effects on academics and the barriers for treatment for NKU students. Surveys were administered online to collect data from approximately 102 students. It is anticipated that students who currently abuse substances are more likely to struggle academically. Investigation of the activity of tRNA modification enzymes Trm732 and Trm734
No full text2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationTransfer RNAs (tRNAs) are molecules that transport amino acids to the ribosome to facilitate protein synthesis. Post-transcriptional modifications of tRNA are required for function. Trm7 is a methyltransferase enzyme which interacts with Trm732 and Trm734 to modify tRNAs at residues C32 and G34, respectively. Trm732 and Trm734 variants have been generated via site-directed mutagenesis and transformed into Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Analysis of these variants, when compared to wild type, allows for the identification of the residues involved in the methylation of tRNA. Function has been investigated quantitatively by measuring nucleoside modification levels with Ultra-Pressure Liquid Chromatography, and qualitatively through growth assays.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gzO0pqH7GH

Psychosocial Characteristics of College Students and JUUL

The use of JUUL, posing a variety of health concerns, has been linked to impaired brain development and identified as a gateway to other addictive substances. The current study examines the demographics and psychosocial characteristics of youth who utilize JUUL, including a goal of addressing the lack of research in the field and increasing awareness. This short story takes some creative license by going off the idea that one of Douglass’ fore-mothers was born in the fictional village of Adazi (located in modern day South East Nigeria, West Africa). The whole story is being told from the shaman’s perspective, whose ability to see across oceans has allowed the Muojeke clan to keep themselves updated on the lives of their descendants.
