Evaluating neonatal reflexes in mice exposed to benzo[a]pyrene during early brain development
No full text2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationBenzo[a]pyrene (BaP) is a pollutant and a known carcinogen. Exposure from BaP can come from vehicle emissions, tobacco smoke, and grilled food. Pregnant mice were dosed with BaP or corn oil on small pieces of cereal from gestational day 10 to weaning at postnatal day 25. We tested neonatal reflexes using the righting reflex test at P5, 7 and 10. We also used the negative geotaxis test at P7, 10, and 14. We compared three genotypes of mice to determine if genetic differences affected susceptibility. Surface Art in Mathematica
No full text2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentation"Our research seeks to produce esthetically pleasing surfaces with the software Mathematica. In our artworks, we used minimal surfaces, surfaces of least area, and tube surfaces, surfaces built around curves. These surfaces are 2- dimensional forms that lack thickness and use 2 variables in their representative equations.
When adjusting the thickness, the surfaces became 3-dimensional. We used code to modify these sets of equations, which were then combined with
built-in functions generating a range of results. Our results included 3D prints, movies, and graphics on Mathematica. The 3D prints helped visually display the position, in space, of the surfaces we created on a real-life scale. We used digitally generated movies to show how a minimal surface can morph into another surface by altering a parameter value. Finally, we altered parametric equations to produce an array of surfaces to show how minor changes in these equations affect the appearance of

Although the United States still claims to be a democracy, a closer look at the data, shows that we are currently functioning as an oligarchy. And furthermore, evidence showing the deep divide caused by our two-party dominant political system and how the new age media has heightened that polarization highlights the fact that our national level politics are in trouble. If the United States is to save the democracy in which it was founded upon, it will need to give more autonomy to local governments, allowing local leaders who are in tune with their communities to drive policy and make decisions that meet the needs of their politically and economically diverse regions."https://youtu.be/NSj1HcTpHQ

Sex-Specific Gene Expression Associated with Zn Homeostasis in Squirrelfish
No full text2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationStudies in squirrelfish (Holocentrus adscensionis) show that females preferentially increase Zn uptake from the environment during reproduction. This seemingly occurs as Zn is hyper-absorbed in the intestine and accumulated in the liver. This research focuses on the hypothesis that maternal Zn homeostasis modifications occur as a result of differential expression of cellular Zn transporters and Zn-binding proteins between the sexes due to reproductive status. Male and female squirrelfish were collected, and after generating cDNA from foregut and liver samples, qPCR was utilized to measure the expression of specific genes of interest that play important roles in Zn transport and accumulation.https://youtu.be/0m7-fEwXs0

Human Immune Activation by an HSV-Vectored Vaccine
No full text2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationWe developed herpes simplex virus (HSV)-vectored vaccines for hepatitis C virus (HCV). Vaccine-infected human immune cells demonstrated activation by upregulated expression of inflammatory cytokines and chemokines and by enhanced expression of cellular maturation markers. Expression of adhesion molecules and chemokine receptors were altered in a manner consistent with immune activation. The HSV backbone of the vaccine appeared to be the major source of immune activation. While the initial vaccine target was hepatitis C virus, genes from any other infectious virus, such as novel corona viruses, could be inserted into this vaccine vector to generate immunity to that agent.https://youtu.be/eFRppAlUAz
