Comparing Period Recovery Methods: Lomb-Scargle and Analysis of Variance
No full text2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationIn our galaxy, many stellar systems have orbiting low-mass companions. In order to model the radial velocity orbital curves of the low-mass companions, we must correctly identify the orbital period. We have tested two period finding algorithms: Lomb-Scargle (LS) and Analysis of Variance (AoV). Using these algorithms, we recovered periods from our synthetic data and compared them to the true values. We find that LS has a 69.9% chance of recovering the correct period, while AoV has a 57.5% recovery rate. We will discuss effects on orbital period recovery rate due to parameters like period, eccentricity, and semi-amplitude.https://youtu.be/oNXozNIPX3

This research will look at this problem from the perspective of the broadband service providers as well as the rural populations that are impacted by this lack of access. The conclusions of this research will show that the excessive cost of creating broadband infrastructure in sparsely populated areas, and how this situation creates a digital divide leaving these populations at a disadvantage in gaining access to information further isolating these communities.https://youtu.be/8QILYaXCi5

Consequences of Intergenerational Poverty on Academic Attainment
No full text2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationPoverty is an overwhelmingly wide-spread problem that impacts multiple areas of functioning including social, behavioral, emotional, physiological, and neuropsychological functioning. Research shows that impacts of poverty on functioning during childhood are key risk factors for poverty to be continued into adulthood, resulting in poverty passing through generations. This study is designed to determine the impacts that intergenerational poverty has on academic achievement amongst NKU students. This survey will use non-probability and purposeful sampling to collect data from 290 NKU students. Socioeconomic Factors Influence on Higher Education among NKU Students

Previous studies have found that financial factors are the main reasoning behind attending graduate programs. This is especially true when it comes to students from lower-income backgrounds. It is expected that undergraduate students will select financial factors as the most influential reasoning in regard to their decision. These findings may provide more insight into the understanding behind the choices of graduate students. Alzheimer’s Association Volunteer Family Support Group Facilitators: On-Boarding and Effectiveness

Family Support Groups (FSGs) are one identified resource. Within Region 10 of the Alzheimer’s Association, the majority of FSGs offered are facilitated by volunteers from the community, rather than trained clinicians. The effectiveness and experience of volunteer facilitators is a significant gap within this area of research.
