Synthesis, Purification, and Characterization of 13-Alpha Epimer Estrogens
No full text2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationEstrogenic hormones derived from agricultural and pharmaceutical industries are common pollutants. The concentration of steroidal pollution in natural bodies of water has therefore been increasing with rising demands. These pollutants may be detected with fluorescence and treated through photolysis. Photolysis breaks the estrogenic pollutants down, which may reduce their harmful effects. A synthesis was adapted using estrone or 3-methoxy-estrone, o-phenylenediamine, and glacial acetic acid to produce the steroidal epimers more efficiently than with photolysis. Spectroscopy was used to characterize their properties of these structures. The epimer of estrone is more fluorescent and degrades more slowly than estrone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7jMbM_USYe
Food Insecurity at NKU
No full text2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationAs the cost of post-secondary education rises, heavier financial burdens are placed upon families and students resulting in escalating rates of food insecurity among college students. This study seeks to examine the relationship between experiences with food insecurity before and after enrollment at NKU. A brief self-administered survey was used to assess the rates of food insecurity before and after enrollment. The results of the RBI approved study are expected to show an increase in food insecurity after enrollment. The Effects of Clicker Training on Stress in Communally Housed Shelter Cats
No full text2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationStress is a major concern regarding shelter cat populations, as it has many health and behavioral implications that could prolong their stay in a shelter environment. Many studies have looked at stress reduction methods in individually housed cats, but not those housed in communal rooms. This study focused on these communally housed cats and the effects that clicker training had on their stress levels. It was found that after six sessions, cats exhibited significantly lower overall stress scores. Menstruation is “the periodic discharge of blood and mucosal tissue from the uterus, occurring approximately monthly from puberty to menopause in nonpregnant women and females of other primate species,” (Dictionary.com, 2020). In other words, menstruation is a biological process that rids the uterus of what it no longer needs on a monthly basis. While this is a topic that women, universally, understand and have some experience with, a social stigma still surrounds the word in the United States. This experiment’s goal was to investigate why walking in nature has this effect on mood and to discover if exposure to nature leads to increased pain tolerance. Participants were assigned to either photograph nature or themselves. Then, results from emotions tests, thoughts tests, and cold presser tasks were compared. Data analysis is not completed, but we hypothesize that the nature photography group will have increased awe and decreased rumination. Drug and Alcohol Use Among NKU Students

This is concerning because substance abuse negatively impacts academic achievement. This study aims to determine what substances are used, existing knowledge about where to find treatment on campus, and the effects that use has on academic achievement among NKU students. An online survey was used to collect data from 100 NKU students. Findings might suggest that the stigma related to drug and alcohol use is a deterrence to seeking help. The Effects of Developmental Antipsychotics on Impulse Control
No full text2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity preparationAntipsychotic medications are prescribed more frequently for psychiatric disorders in children. However, little is known about the impact of antipsychotics on brain development. Since antipsychotics target brain regions responsible for impulse control, we used a delayed discounting task to measure impulsivity in adult rats treated with the antipsychotic, risperidone, early in life. Rats were administered the vehicle or the antipsychotic drug (3.0 mg/kg) daily for four weeks beginning on postnatal day 14. Adult rats that received risperidone demonstrated motivation levels similar to control rats.
