Mental Health Services Utilization By LGBTQ Students at NKU

This exploratory research project utilized an online survey to explore whether this same pattern, as indicated by prior research, is also true among NKU students. Over 150 graduate and undergraduate NKU students participated in this research project. Introducing PHOEBE: An Eclipsing Companion Modeling Software Package

A transit is when the companion passes in front of or behind its host star. In this poster, we will introduce the Python package PHOEBE as well as present the different visualizations of the model that PHOEBE is capable of creating for a given transiting system. Our model can be visualized in four different ways: mesh model, photometric lightcurve, radial velocity curve, and astrometric orbit. Modeling Keplerian Orbits of Stars, Brown Dwarfs, and Planets
No full text2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationAny companion object (Star, Brown Dwarf, or Planet) that orbits a star follows a Keplerian Orbit. In our project, we used a mock catalog of companions that was designed to mimic the APOGEE surveys. The goal of our project was to compare the effectiveness of Markov-Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) techniques with more traditional orbital fitting methods for deriving correct companion orbits from radial velocity data. We investigated how well we could recover orbital parameters as a function of parameter space, and in particular, we focused on the trade-offs between computational time and precision.https://youtu.be/Ejw0ABUHEg

Development of Heteroaryl Compounds Targeting at Aromatase for Cancer Therapy

A palladium-catalyzed direct αC(sp3) heteroarylation of ketones under microwave irradiation was performed to synthesize isocoumarin derivatives. The optimized reaction conditions are as follows: 1.1 equivalents of ketone, 1 equivalent of heteroaryl halide, 2.4 equivalents of NaOtBu, XPhos Pd Gen 4 catalyst, toluene, MW 1300 C for 10 min. The final product was purified by medium pressure liquid chromatography (MPLC) and characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Anxiety and Depression on Campus

Often, a college student’s anxiety and/or depression may have a negative impact on their academic performance—for example, a student’s GPA and attendance rates. This study examines the prevalence of these ramifications. Data was collected from NKU students through an online survey using Qualtrics. The Influence on the Day of the Week on Physical Activity and Sleep in College Adults
No full text2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationPrevious research shows that college students can be extremely active or sedentary based on various factors such as time of year, gender, and perhaps the day of the week. The goal of this study was to assess if one day of the week altered physical activity and caloric expenditure in college adults. Subjects wore a wrist-worn activity tracker for 30 days which recorded daily steps and daily caloric expenditure. Homelessness and Academic Success at NKU
No full text2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationStudies show those who experience housing insecurity face more barriers to academic success than those with stable housing. This study is collecting data about the experience of Northern Kentucky University students and how experiencing housing insecurity affects academic performance. A brief IRB approved self-administered survey will be used to collect data about their experiences with housing insecurity and academic performance. The results from this study are expected to show that students who experience housing insecurity have poorer academic outcomes than students with stable housing.
