2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationAdverse childhood experiences will impact a child survivors interpersonal relationships, mental health, and physical health. The effects of adverse childhood experiences do not stop in childhood and will go on to impact the survivors into adulthood, more specifically college students on campus. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of therapeutic interventions for adverse childhood experiences and its effectiveness on the college student’s quality of life.  The further study will determine if therapeutic interventions for adverse childhood experiences will be beneficial to the college campus.https://youtu.be/CG58emERqj

Portraying Bipolar Disorder for Use in Cinematherapy

    No full text
2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationCinematherapy describes using film as a therapeutic tool. Its success is dependent, in part, on a patient’s ability to identify with an on-screen character. Research suggests few films accurately portray characters with mental illnesses. Thus, films available for cinematherapy in relation to psychotherapy are limited. To contribute to this neglected catalogue, I wrote a 20-page screenplay titled Etta which explores bipolar disorder specifically. Its plot and main character are inspired by medically deemed symptoms of bipolar disorder and personal testimonies of those living with the illness. Additionally, I designed Etta’s structure and content to comply with the logistics of cinematherapy.https://youtu.be/9VguxeQYZP

    No full text
2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationPrevious studies have found that the prevalence of sexual assault and violence among college students remain higher than national rates, with approximately 15-25% of college students reporting having experienced some form of sexual assault within their college career. The purpose of this project is to examine if lack of comprehensive sexual education prior to post-secondary education leads to the incidence of sexual assault and violence on college campuses, specifically at NKU. It is expected that data collected by this study will find the rates of sexual assault among college students is related to minimum exposure to quality sexual education.https://youtu.be/gMc3kPpCOx

Fine Arts Programs Are Necessary for Quality Modern Education

    No full text
2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationThe lack of importance placed on fine arts in public schools is a growing concern in the future of our country’s children. By creating an equal distribution of importance, recognition, and funding for all the opportunities a student has available to them, we can better serve them in their journey towards growth and maturity. I will be examining this problem through the disciplines of history, management, psychology, education, sociology, and fine arts. Through these disciplines, I will discuss how we can change our education system for the better and make sure that no one is passed over.https://youtu.be/a3SPrvLXEB

Heteroaryl Isoflavone compounds as aromatase inhibitors: Diketone Reaction Exploration

    No full text
2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationThe overall goal of the research conducted was to synthesize a potential aromatase inhibitor through a heteroarylation reaction. Previously, a diketone compound was synthesized through the course of our normal research. After a synthetic route was created and confirmed, work began to synthesize a library of diketone compounds. Products were synthesized through a two-step method, in which the compound was synthesized through our base reaction. Once the compound was confirmed by NMR, the second step involved the formation of the diketone under microwave irradiation. A library of successful products and their pure yields is reported in this poster.https://youtu.be/2zhh5xAc4K

    No full text
2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationWith the increasing prevalence of technological use, students are finding it harder to turn off the devices. The question then becomes, what are the effects of the constant connectivity? This study assesses whether devices used for access to social media accounts during class time has any direct correlation on a student’s GPA. The data examines students currently enrolled at Northern Kentucky University and is collected based on information gathered from an online survey. Results are expected to show that , with increased usage of devices during class for personal use, GPA are lowered.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YcVmMbuufC

    No full text
2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationCollege students who are single parents face unique challenges that may adversely affect their mental health, which has had limited research exploration. The purpose of this study is to examine any correlation between adverse childhood experiences and single-parent families. The study also determines if there are sufficient resources that support college students who have had adverse childhood experiences and single-parent families on campus. The study would suggest students advocate for appropriate services on campus. https://youtu.be/Kwtl63G7pi

2020 Student Celebration of Research and Creativity presentationStudies found an increase of vaping among students between the ages of 14-21 which is concerning because of evidence of adverse effects. . The purpose of this study is to examine the perceptions and awareness of the harmful effects of vaping among NKU students.  A total of 100 surveys were administered online. It is anticipated that a majority of participants are unaware of the medical consequences involved with vaping. The findings from this study may add to the current knowledge and help researchers and practitioners.https://youtu.be/P8h5Ies2at
