Impacts of LGBTQ+ Discrimination on NKU’s Campus
No full text2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationResearch suggests that LGBTQ+ discrimination leads to increased mental illness. The current study seeks to examine the relationship between discrimination and mental health symptoms among LGBTQ+ students. A brief self-administered survey will be used to assess for perceived discrimination by LGBTQ+ students and reported symptoms of anxiety and depression. The results from this IRB approved study are expected to show a correlation between LGBTQ+ discrimination on campus and increased mental health disparities among NKU’s LGBTQ+ population. The Relationship Between Sleep Patterns and the Mental Health of NKU Students

This inevitably will have an impact on one’s mental health. A cross-sectional self-reporting survey will be used to examine the relationship between sleep patterns and the mental health college students here on NKU’s campus and just how important sleep is for the mental health of college students. The expectation is to find that there is in fact a correlation between the two. No full text2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationThe orders of insects: Ephemeroptera (mayflies), Plecoptera (stoneflies), and Trichoptera (caddisflies), are used as important indicator species of stream health. Past macroinvertebrate sampling efforts of our lab demonstrated low representation of Plecoptera in the EPT biodiversity of Northern Kentucky stream systems. I am systematically sampling streams in Boone, Campbell, and Kenton counties testing the hypothesis thatPlecopterans are found in habitats with scores above 85 on a standard Qualitative Habitat Evaluation Index (QHEI) score, and with a goal to create a distribution map of native stoneflies in the northern Kentucky area. Since September 1, 2019 Bracken County Health Department conducted an educational program with local first responders, including Fire/EMS/Law Enforcement/Coroner/EMA Emergency Dispatch to provide them with information about overdose data gathering tools that are available for use, by first responders, to collect local data on near fatal/fatal overdoses in Bracken County. The purpose of the study is to provide (1) Quick Response Team training and Overdose Training for the first responders as well as (3) track data as overdose prevention strategies, education, and awareness toward areas in Bracken County with the highest near overdose numbers.https://youtu.be/ENo2BI_sYq

Throughout the year they seem to struggle with putting healthy food on the table3. I looked at cities that at one time succeeded and then failed. How government policies effect how people put food on the table.4. One solution to solve the problem of hunger is to raise minimum wage to $15.00 dollars an hour.5. In the United States where people live in luxury, the people who are unable to put food on the table, stand in charity lines, or on the corner with signs. Please help, I am homeless

Development of Augmented Reality Flashcards about Rocks and Minerals

Augmented Reality, an emerging technology, can overcome this problem by enabling superimposition of digital information directly on real environment. The purpose of the research is not to replace physical specimens with digital models but to significantly improve Earth science education related online courses at NKU. I have developed a simple and inexpensive workflow to
create 3D digital models of rocks and minerals at NKU using 2D images and Agisoft Metashape, a photogrammetry software.

First Aid for Emotions, Not Just Physical Injury
No full text2020 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationMental health is becoming more and more of an issue. It is now common for people to have depression or anxiety. This may be true because our world is becoming more complex. If we analyze the relationship between chronic stress in general and chronic work-related stress specifically, we can see the relationship between chronic stress itself and mental health episodes, and to, as a society- better handle mental health episodes we can implement a practice called emotional first aid. The main attempt to address this problem is just mental health maintenance overall. To give the person suffering from mental health issues medicine, therapy, or intensive treatment to “make them more normal”. However, when serious mental health issues occur, the immediate environment and people in it are the most important- if the people around the person suffering were more aware of how to handle a mental health issue, the likelihood of recovery without things like medication or intensive therapy might be a little more likely. I am highlighting the parallel between a larger awareness in society to best handle mental health episodes/situations, specifically correlated with the increasing number of mental health issues correlated with chronic, unaddressed work-place stress from the interdisciplinary disciplines of leadership, communications, and psychology.https://youtu.be/VeHmaCRf4S

This will open up social work career opportunities, which ultimately means that more social workers need to become well-informed about the older adult population. A self-reported questionnaire conducted through emails, to undergrad and graduate social worker students, examined the students’ knowledge, attitude, skills and readiness to work with the aging population. This study expects to find that social work students are interested and open to learning about gerontology.
