Recruiting Geographically Diverse Respondents on a Budget
2021 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentation"Intergroup conflict has profound effects on society and individuals. The Know Rivalry Project is an intercollegiate research collaboration dedicated to sustainable production, discernment, and dissemination of knowledge about rivalry. To better understand the various antecedents and consequences of rivalries, we developed an online survey, tested it, and fielded it to recruited fans (our respondent sample) of both domestic and foreign sports. Doing so required a systematic process of joining communities, starting authentic conversations, and sharing survey access. In the future, responses will be cleaned and analyzed to refine our cross-sectional understanding of rivalry and how it affects various cultures."https://youtu.be/LrPn9f6Zwx
The Impact of Police Brutality Video Footage on Mental Health
2021 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationDue to the rise of social media, it has become easier to access video footage of police brutality. Despite not being directly involved, viewers of these videos are at risk of long-lasting traumatic effects. By means of an electronic survey, which will be distributed through social media, this cross-sectional study will examine the mental health and secondary traumatic consequences experienced by those who watch video footage of incidents of police brutality. The findings from this survey may inform mental health professionals who are developing tools and resources for individuals who have been impacted by this form of secondary trauma.https://youtu.be/mHeXqin7IE
Unemployment Benefits: The Need for a Strong Federal System
2021 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentation"There are major problems within our state-run unemployment programs, and this was showcased by the COVID-19 pandemic when these programs were overrun with claims and disgruntled users. The problem stems from every state having a different program with different criteria with varying amounts of aid. This capstone aims to argue for a federal unemployment benefits system where every American receives a proportionate amount of aid nationwide. This argument is supported by a comparison between two states’ programs, research into how ineffective state governments are during an economic recession, and the huge role the federal government had in bailing out the state programs during the pandemic."https://youtu.be/Euv0-s5eG2
Understanding the Crisis of School Bullying
2021 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentation"Bullying is a highly prevalent impact on individuals every day with school environments being known to be the location for many instances of bulling among children. With nearly 160,000 children staying home every day due to the fear of being bullied, this is an obvious crisis which is supported by study within psychology, sociology and human resources. Research has found that intervention within schools can help curb bullying but even still this crisis proceeds. In my research, I investigate the characteristics of bullies and victims, the influences which shape these parties, and the methods that may help end bullying."https://youtu.be/DKugsP7h8q
Kentucky African American Authors, Musicians and Photographers
Library Fellowship for Undergraduate Students of Color, 2021 spring semesterThis research paper fulfills the requirement of the Library Fellowship for Undergraduate Students of Color for the 2021 spring semester. It is based on the lives of African American individuals from Kentucky and/or those who have spent several years of their lives in Kentucky. Many African Americans across the state of Kentucky have proven to be educated, skilled and talented. From the 1800s to the last generation, these people lived to become great in their specific domains such as literature writing in its different forms, music as well as photography. They have gone through different challenges to make history and be examples to the generations after them. This research includes 55 African Americans from Kentucky; 22 authors, 26 musicians including two groups of two and four individuals respectively and finally 7 photographers including a group made up of two individuals. This is a total of 50 bibliographies. The cover photograph incorporates some of the authors and musicians discussed in this paper; Lionel Hampton, bell hooks, Frank X Walker, Alice Allison Dunnigan, Valerie Coleman, Houston A. Baker Jr., Suzan-Lori Parks, Charles H. Wesley, Boyce D. Watkins, Crystal Wilkinson, Bobby William Austin, Lyman T. Johnson, Daniel Burley, W.C. Harmful Algae Image Classification With Machine Learning
2021 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentation"Harmful algae can grow rapidly into blooms and release toxins that can contaminate drinking water sources which can be unsafe to humans and wildlife. This research has discovered images belonging to seven different genera of harmful algae which were used as a data set to train a convolutional neural network (CNN) to automatically classify harmful algae at the microscopic level. After data augmentation, 20,010 images were trained on the network. Our CNN has shown an overall accuracy of 99.75%. The next steps include collecting more original images and modification the neural network architecture to improve the accuracy of unseen images."https://youtu.be/_ITLOd7DLF
Innocence Lost: How Children's Literature Can Provide an Ethical Education on Factory Farming
2021 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentationFactory farms are the high- speed mass production and slaughter of animals for the meat and dairy industry. In order to raise awareness of factory farms, also known as industrial farm animal production, parents and educators should utilize children’s literature to inform future generations about the individual impact they have on farm animals. Raising awareness in children and teenagers will lead to more advocates for the animals bred, raised, and slaughtered in factory farms while also giving the children the truth about what’s on their plates and going in their bodies. Sheltering children from the knowledge of what happens to their food when it is still an animal takes away choices that could lead them to decide what kind of ethical human they want to be. The next generation will inherit the world with the knowledge passed onto them, they should be taught early on the impact they have on the world around them so that they may make informed choices every day. It is society’s ethical duty to raise morally conscious children, if children are not told the truth then they will not be given the full extent of their choices. Choices that will impact their health, moral consciousness, and their personal values during key developmental years.https://youtu.be/s9H6ecJlbo
Prescription Drug Abuse on College Campuses
2021 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentation"Prescription drug abuse is an epidemic that persists across all populations. It is the use of medication without a prescription from a healthcare provider, for nonmedical purposes, or in excess of what is prescribed. This exploratory cross-sectional study aims to examine the prevalence of prescription drug abuse on college campuses and the reasons for the abuse. Data will be collected through a self-administered survey and is expected to demonstrate a high prevalence of abuse due to environmental, social, and intrapersonal factors. The findings will assist helping professionals and educators alike in improving the health and functioning of college students."https://youtu.be/K5_jcB0QvX
Al-shatrat_2021System and Metric Analysis Comparison of Neo4j and Microsoft Azure Cosmos DB
2021 Celebration of Student Research and Creativity presentation"Graph databases provide a powerful solution for designing databases to store and retrieve relationship dense datasets such as in social media and recommendation engines. Two of the leading graph database implementations used in mainstream application development are Microsoft Azure Cosmos DB and Neo4j, each with their own benefits and drawbacks. In this paper, we test and compare the results of both offerings, focusing on key performance metrics like response speed, scalability, and cost, paired with an analysis of unique feature sets to identify which is the better option for application development."https://youtu.be/vGUQNM7Sun
