Effect of Gradation on the Permeability of Foam-conditioned Soils in Mechanized Excavation

    Get PDF
Tunnel excavation in a soft ground is often conducted utilizing excavation machines, including earth pressure balance (EPB) boring machines. A safe and economical excavation using this method requires adding materials such as foam and polymer to the soil inside the chamber and the tunnel face to control parameters like permeability, plasticity, shear resistance, and compressibility. Using an experimental method, the present study investigates the effects of granulation, soil moisture content, and pressure on the permeability of a soil conditioned with foam. According to the results, as the effective grain size (d10) increased from 0.1 to 0.4 mm, the permeability of the conditioned soil grew from 2.28 × 10−5 m/s to 12.3 × 10−5 m/s. A rise in the coefficient of curvature (Cc), while the percentage of the materials passing through the sieve No. 200 was kept constant, increased the permeability coefficient (ki) of the specimens since the medium-grained particles (d30) became coarser. A rise in Cc and the percentage of materials passing through sieve No. 200 resulted in an initial rise in the ki due to the lack of contribution of d30 and a subsequent reduction in it caused by the rise in fine-grained materials. The ki was also found to have inverse relationships with the uniformity coefficient (Cu) and pressure. As Cu increased from 3 to 20, the ki declined from 1.23 × 10−5 m/s to 0.71 × 10−5 m/s

Experimental Investigation of Lateral Stability of a Longitudinally Assembled Girder Made of Precast Reinforced and Prestressed Concrete Parts

    Get PDF
This research focuses on the lateral stability (LS) of a longitudinally assembled girder (AG), constructed for both economic and constructional purposes. The AG features a central precast prestressed concrete (PPC) beam, 34.175 meters long, extended by two precast reinforced concrete (PRC) beams, each 2.63 meters long, connected by bolted joints. A gap between the joints was filled with high-strength grout to efficiently transfer compressive stresses. The experimental study considered two types of imperfections: initial lateral imperfections in the AG and the initial tilt angle between the connected surfaces. Three tests (AG1-A, AG1-B, AG2) were performed using nondestructive loading with concrete blocks to assess LS. The first two tests were conducted on AG1, keeping the initial imperfections consistent but varying the preload on the bolts, while the third test used specimen AG2, which had greater lateral imperfection at the mid-span cross-section. Test results showed that, due to the high preload, the tilt angle imperfection had a negligible impact on the AG's lateral stability, as separation at the connections was minimal. AG1, in tests AG1-A and AG1-B, remained laterally stable throughout the entire loading process, whereas AG2 experienced stability loss due to insufficient lateral restraints, significant geometric imperfections, and eccentric loading

Breaking Barriers in-Vivo THz Communication Analysis for Nano Networks in Human Tissues

    Get PDF
Body Nano-Communication based on RF radio communication in the terahertz band supports health and fitness industry applications. Nano communications primary facilitate real-time monitoring of biological and chemical substances inside the human body, helping an early detection of stroke and heart attack risks. Monitoring small communication range inside the human body via electromagnetic propagation is not an easy task; thus, in this paper, we investigate the path loss of radio propagation in three human tissues: blood, skin, and fat using a Tera-Hertz frequency range in between 0.5 and 1.5 THz. The results support the idea that the path loss inside the human body depends on the dielectric loss of human tissues and the function of frequency and distance. It also shows that increasing the distance and the frequency of the signal inside the tissues, such as blood, fat, and skin, the path loss increases because the attenuation increases when the frequency increases. Furthermore, the study examines the effect of Doppler as a method of measuring the speed of blood flow to predict the early risks being considered

SEM Image-based Porosity Analysis of Fire Damaged High Strength Concrete

    Get PDF
The porosity of concrete affects the durability of reinforced concrete structures, wherein high levels of porosity are linked to a shorter service life. Recent works have noted that high porosity levels naturally exist in the aftermath of a fire exposure – especially when concrete is classified as high strength concrete (HSC). To shed more light into this phenomenon, this paper showcases a method for measuring the porosity of HSC under elevated temperatures through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In this method, SEM-based images were examined to quantify the surface porosity of fire-affected HSC. Detailed image analysis was performed for HSC exposed to various heating durations. The study concludes that the surface porosity obtained via the SEM processing method is in good agreement with that from the SEM-based method (with a minor average difference of 3.8%). As such, the proposed method is expected to be reliable for the porosity analysis of fire-damaged concrete

Interaction Simulation of a Lateral Wall Distance on Aerodynamic Characteristics of a Simplified High-speed Train

    Get PDF
The natural features, such as mountain slopes, cliffs, and the human-made artificial walls, such as train station walls, windbreakers, and even residential and office buildings, can affect the movement structure of high-speed trains. In the present paper, using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), the interaction of lateral wall distances on the aerodynamic characteristics of a high-speed train is simulated. To achieve this -using OpenFOAM- the governing equations are solved. Also, the used solver is simpleFoam which the Simple algorithm (Semi-Implicit Method for Pressure Linked Equations) is applied to decouple the Navier-Stokes's equations. In the following a simplified high-speed train is considered, combining Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations and k-ω (SST) turbulence approach, an incompressible turbulent air-flow around it is simulated. Also, the flow and aerodynamic structures affected by distance changes between the lateral wall and the train are analyzed. Therefore, the lift, drag, and side aerodynamic forces and their corresponding moments as pitching, yawing, and rolling are provided and compared for four distance cases. In the following, the most significant components of flow structure, such as streamlines, velocity and pressure distributions, and vortices structures, are discussed. Finally, using the turbulent kinetic energy analysis, the air-flow's turbulent level around the train, especially in critical areas, is investigated. The findings illustrated that the closer distance between the train and the wall has more destructive effects on the movement of the high-speed trains. The results of the present study can be helpful for designing structures along the rail and distancing it from natural features

Személyes adatok kezelése és biztonsága a felnőttképzésben

The national system of adult education has undergone major changes in recent years. While the legal framework fundamentally changed the opportunities and obligations of adult trainers, it was also necessary to adapt to the restrictive measures introduced due to the COVID-19 pandemic. These two factors together contributed to the structural transformation of adult education. While the number of adult trainers increased significantly due to the change in regulations, the restrictive measures taken to curb the epidemic accelerated digitization, and more and more adult education provider turned to online distance learning. The personal data provided by the students are therefore not only stored digitally due to legal obligations, but also for the purpose of conducting the courses. The range of data services has expanded, it is no longer enough to provide anonymous data on training participants, which - together with the increase in the number of adult trainers - results in the movement of a significant amount of data, including personal data.A felnőttképzés hazai rendszere az elmúlt években komoly változáson esett át. Miközben a jogi keretrendszer alapjaiban változtatta meg a felnőttképzők lehetőségeit és kötelezettségeit, a COVID-19 világjárvány miatt bevezetett korlátozó intézkedésekhez is alkalmazkodni kellett. E két tényező együttesen járult hozzá a felnőttképzés strukturális átalakulásához. Míg a szabályozás változása okán a felnőttképzők száma jelentősen növekedett, a járvány megfékezésére hozott korlátozó intézkedések felgyorsították a digitalizációt, egyre többen fordultak az online távoktatás irányába.
