    School Leader Perceptions Regarding the Role of the School Based Speech-Language Pathologists

    Through this research, school leaders’ knowledge-base, experiences, and perceptions regarding the role of the school-based speech-language pathologist were investigated. The purpose of this study was to address how school leaders perceived and interacted with speech-language pathologists and any barriers that affected leader perceptions. A qualitative instrumental case study design was selected for the study. Data obtained from personal interviews were analyzed and interpreted through a critical theory lens. Key themes that emerged from school leader perceptions included: (a) limited knowledge regarding the role of speech-language pathologists, (b) understanding of school-based challenges for speech-language pathologists, (c) limited knowledge on contributions speech-language pathologists provide, (d) school leader recognition of limited knowledge-base regarding speech-language pathologists, and (e) school leaders want to learn more about the complete role of the school based, speech-language pathologist. Findings were interpreted relative to educational leadership, speech-language pathologists, and specific policies and practices related to school leadership

    The Role of Video Game Play, Gender Roles, and Career Decision Self-Efficacy in Development of STEM Career Interests & Motivation

    The gender wage gap, disadvantaging working women, continues to grow despite progress toward women’s rights and occupational equity. With the world economy prioritizing growth in technological industries, the underrepresentation of women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields perpetuates systemic gender inequity. Further, given traditional social gender roles, women and girls may be less likely than boys and men to pursue STEM careers. Though specialized programs seek to grow the number of girls and young women engaged in STEM-related education and prepare them for the growing demand for STEM laborers, these programs are regional, seasonal, and not widely available (Girls Who Code, 2019). Therefore, other cost-effective interventions are needed to help facilitate and maintain interest among girls and women in STEM-related subject matter and careers. As video games are associated with development of STEM skills (Bonner & Dorneich, 2016; Blickenstaff, 2005; Feng, Spence & Pratt, 2007; Giammarco et al., 2014), they may also serve as a mechanism by which to increase girls’ and women’s interest in STEM. The purpose of this study is to assess the relationships between video gaming, gender roles, career-decision self-efficacy, and STEM career interest and motivation. Specifically, video gaming as a potential moderator of the relationship between gender roles and STEM career interest and motivation will be explored

    Epileptogenesis in rodents leads to neural system dysfunction and loss of associative memory measured by auditory event related potentials.

    Epilepsy is a common and disabling neurological condition affecting 1-2% of the world’s population. Individuals suffering from epilepsy are prone to cognitive dysfunctions with detrimental effects in neural processing and memory resulting in decreases in quality of life. An evaluation of inherent neural processes is valuable information to diagnose and clinically assess cognitive function, which could significantly improve the treatment possibilities and thereby the quality of life for epilepsy patients. An evaluation of cognitive functions during epileptogenesis was performed by experiments using auditory event related potentials (ERP) in rats before and after induction of status epilepticus (SE) using the Lithium-Pilocarpine model (LP) of epilepsy. The aim of this study was to assess changes in neural system function during epileptogenesis by evaluating inherent responses to auditory stimuli in three ERP tasks at different time periods: before SE (control state), one week-, one month- and two months- after SE (epileptic state). 1. Habituation- (a.) evaluate the ability to habituate to repeated auditory stimuli using the N70 peak response, (b.) examine the time-frequency response through inter-trial coherence (ITC) and event-related spectral perturbation (ERSP); 2. Chirp- evaluate the auditory steady state responses through ITC; and, 3. Mismatch-Negativity (MMN)- evaluate associative memory through ERP responses to regular or odd tones. Habituation tasks showed increased N70 peak magnitude during epileptogenesis from 1-week, 1-month, and 2-months after SE using repeated measures analysis of variance (rANOVA) with significant differences before and after SE (p\u3c0.05, 1-week, 2-months). ITC showed significant differences between groups during habituation from 0.5-20 Hz and ERSP from 60-100 Hz and 0.5-15 Hz, with baseline corrected ERSP revealing differences from 1-30 Hz. The habituation results indicate a diminished ability to properly habituate to repeated stimuli with abnormal neuronal firing in the epileptic state compared to the non-epileptic control state linking a possible mechanism with imbalances in neuronal inhibition and excitation during epileptogenesis. Chirp response ITC showed increased synchronous activity in high gamma band (\u3e40 Hz) during epileptogenesis indicating the neuronal response in epileptic groups are phase locked to the chirp stimuli at a higher incidence than controls. Epileptic MMN ERP responses for odd and regular tones exhibited a decrease in the response curves from 250-350ms post-stimulus indicating a loss of ability to distinguish tones and difficulties with their associative memory during epileptogenesis.Our results indicate that a proper EEG-based analysis of auditory ERPs are useful in evaluating neural systems during epileptogenesis showing clear imbalances in excitatory: inhibitory function, as well as an indication that associative memory is detrimentally affected. The ERP methods employed may help in the diagnosis of the epileptic patients with cognitive disabilities as their epilepsy progresses, as it is simple, non-invasive and cost effective

    Longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) is native to parts of the Western Gulf region. The Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) is a widely available comprehensive yield prediction system for these plantations. Predictions from the time-of-planting were obtained for planting densities of 300, 500, and 700 for site indexes of 50, 60, 70, and 80 ft (base age 25). This study will determine the optimal planting density given assumed current reforestation and management costs and management and stumpage revenues

    17. Increase in Social Media Use to Support Increased Meal Preparation by College Students during the COVID-19 Experience

    Background The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in higher education institutions transitioning to online course delivery and limiting on-campus activities. With decreasing access to campus food service and restaurants, college students with limited cooking experience are now reliant on home-prepared meals. Purpose The purpose of this study was to explore cooking skills and social media use for meal preparation in college students during the COVID-19 experience. Method This cross-sectional descriptive study utilized an online survey with U.S. college students early in the Covid-19 pandemic. The subset of questionnaire items used for this study included demographic, social media use, and cooking and shopping behaviors items. Results Nearly 30% of the college student respondents (N=282) self-identified as the primary person responsible for preparing meals in their homes, while 40% had shared responsibility. Over 50% of the respondents reported increasing meal preparation activities during the quarantine. At the same time, 64% increased their use of social media for researching food preparation techniques and recipe ideas. Sixty-two percent described having “good” grocery shopping skills, while only 51% described their cooking skills as “good”. Conclusions There is an identified need for providing food preparation and shopping skills education to support college students’ ability to manage and adapt during disruptive times
