09. Body Ownership in Art: A Contemporary Context Presentation
Due to the overt sexualization of the female body throughout art history, contemporary female artists have had to confront both current and historical sexualization through acts of body ownership. My work is most closely related to contemporary painters who draw from narratives of female experience, more specifically, those relating to significant women’s issues including sexualization, sexual assault, abuse, and sexuality. In exploring these issues, my process largely includes transforming my own body into an instrument to paint with, which allows me to be both author and subject rather than just, historically speaking, the object of sexualization. My body prints are symbols of self-ownership and act to reclaim the female body in art. This body of work is socially as well as personally motivated and draws upon influences from the feminist art movement of the 1970s, while at the same time incorporating elements of contemporary and pop visual culture. My goal for the work is to serve as an advocate for women and women’s issues that go wholly unnoticed or do not receive the attention they should
11. An examination of the species-area-energy relationship driving decomposer diversity within “sponge” habitats in an estuarine bay
The species-area relationship is a well-known pattern in ecology detailing a strong positive relationship between habitat area and species richness. Alternatively, the species-energy hypothesis suggests that total energy availability drives species richness, with higher richness in systems with more energy input. While these two hypotheses are difficult to separate as they are positively related, they can be mutually exclusive. Species richness may increase with both area and energy availability independently. Here we test the relative importance of habitat area vs energy availability by placing two artificial substrates, polypropylene and cellulose sponges, with four different surface areas in two estuarine habitats. Cellulose sponges are organic and therefore should increase biodiversity by providing both protective structure and nutrition, while polypropylene sponges only provide structure. Organic sponges with large surface areas should promote more diversity than synthetic sponges with the same surface area. To test this, 40 cellulose and 40 polypropylene pre-weighed sponges of each surface area were placed in salt marshes and the open ocean of Terrebonne Bay in Louisiana. After one month, organisms were removed and categorized, and dry weight of the sponges collected. Preliminary results show that abundance was negatively related to surface area, contrary to predictions. However, organic sponges lost more mass, but supported similar abundances of organisms than polypropylene sponges. These results suggest that cellulose sponges are primarily used as nutrition as their effect should be additive if used as structure as well. This project offers important insights into the complexities that habitat diversity has on decomposer systems
13. What Environmental Factors Affect Calling Activity of Frogs in Northern Louisiana?
Multiple variables influence amphibian activity, such as weather, time of year and day, sound, and light (artificial or natural). Previous studies have found that light can impact frog calling behavior, and species vary in their responses to light levels. Because call surveys are useful in determining whether a site is occupied by a species, it is important to determine what factors affect calling activity. In this study, we determined how light and the other previously mentioned variables affect calling activity of two species of frog (Spring Peepers and Cajun Chorus Frogs). We conducted nighttime frog call surveys between January and May 2019 in 14 different areas in northern Louisiana. We recorded data on vocalizing species, weather, noise, and light. We then created occupancy models for each species in R to determine which factors best predict frog calling activity. The null model was the best model for Spring Peepers; they call in almost all conditions. For Cajun Chorus Frogs, the noise model was the best model, but none of the parameters were significant. Although we predicted light would have a greater impact on frog calling activity than other variables, it was not an effective predictor of calling activity. For future investigations, we recommend focusing on the relationship between noise level and calling activity of Cajun Chorus Frogs. We plan to repeat these analyses for other frog species
15. The Impact of Teacher Fidelity on the Effectiveness of WISE and Early Childhood Health Outcomes
Food-related behaviors and attitudes of Early Childhood Educators (ECEs) have the potential to create a significant impact on students’ health outcomes. The We Inspire Smart Eating (WISE) intervention program trains ECEs in promoting fruit and vegetable consumption, encouraging preschoolers to adopt healthy eating habits. This study explores the impact of ECE fidelity and WISE effectiveness on preschoolers’ health. We hypothesize better post-intervention health outcomes for preschoolers with ECEs whose fidelity scores improved after WISE training and program implementation. Fidelity was measured monthly across an academic year by data collectors (DCs) during mealtime and food experiences at two Louisiana pre-schools. During, DCs scored ECEs on a scale of 1 being “Not at all” to 4 being “Very much” in three main categories: hands on exposure, mascot use, and role modeling. The first and the last three observations were grouped separately, and the average of each group calculated to convey changes in ECE fidelity performance. A univariate analysis of variance was computed to determine group differences in post-intervention Resonance Raman Spectroscopy (RRS) of preschoolers while controlling for pre-intervention RRS based on fidelity performance (decreased, no change, increased) of their ECEs. Preliminary studies suggest that there was a significant difference among the groups such that ECEs with increased fidelity performance had statistically significantly higher RRS scores post-intervention compared to ECEs with decreased or no change fidelity performance F (2,272) = 5.19, p = .006. A higher RRS score indicates greater fruit and vegetable consumption, suggesting that improved ECE fidelity impacts preschooler health outcomes
