How political polarization affects voter turnout in Generation Z
The role of political polarization’s effect on voter turnout has been the subject of much research and debate. There has been the recent addition of Generation Z to the mass of eligible voters. This brings rise to the question of how does political polarization affect voter turnout in Generation Z? Past literature that reflects how older generations were affected by polarization determine what factors will be considered when examining Generation Z’s propensity to vote. These include levels of education and political sophistication/awareness. I posit that political polarization can have both an adverse and beneficial effect on voter turnout among Generation Z. I designed a survey for students at Ohio Northern University in search of an answer to my research question
MONARDA SUPPRESSES LPS-INDUCED INFLAMMATION IN MOUSE GRANULOSA CELLS.
Ethnopharmacology is the study of the use of native plants by indigenous people for medicinal purposes. The wide range of healing capabilities of plants, including anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, and anti-cancer action, is based on their chemical constituents. Plants in the genus Monarda, which have high levels of monoterpenes, were used by Native Americans to treat sore throats, intestinal issues, inflammation, and other complaints. Previous studies in this lab demonstrated that extracts of Monarda spp. administered prior to proinflammatory lipopolysaccharide (LPS) reduces development of inflammation. This study focused on the use of M. fistulosa, M.citriodora, M. didyma, and M. punctata as treatment for existing inflammation. To carry out this experiment Monarda spp. extracts were used to treat mouse granulosa cells which expressed LPS induced inflammation. Inflammation was assessed visually using immunocytochemistry and quantitatively via interleukin-6 assays. Monarda extracts are significantly more effective in treating than in preventing LPS-induced inflammation (p =0.03, Student’s t-test). Future research includes a time course study to determine how quickly the Monarda extracts suppress the IL6 inflammatory pathway as well as measuring levels of other inflammatory mediators and responses to other proinflammatory compounds
Ensuring Accuracy and Engagement in Robots using Large Language Models
Large language models have been proven to be powerful tools for information retrieval, content summarization, data manipulation, and even holding conversations. In the past, conversational robots relied on decision trees to relay information to the user, which limited both the creativity and the total knowledge of these tools. Now, large language models such as GPT-3 have the entire internet at their disposal and creativity in the form of non-deterministic neural networks, generating natural, human-like conversations. The Greeting Robot Engineering Capstone uses large language models in its greeting robot to interact with both campus personnel and guests, while also providing accurate information about the university. This honors capstone enhancement builds upon this effort by completing two main tasks: Implementing a collection of various statistical metrics in the interaction system to track engagement, and performing a series of interviews with campus tour guides from the College of Engineering in order to ensure that the robot has exceptional knowledge of the questions that are asked by prospective students. These tasks culminate to establish a comprehensive system to interact with users effectively, while also collecting information that can shape future tour guide training

Effect of Increased Heart Rate on Sleep Quality

Abstract
Studies have shown that sleep is now considered one of the three basic pillars of health together with diet and exercise. Poor sleep quality has a negative impact in different areas related to physical health (1). Insomnia has been alleviated significantly with resistance exercise and stretching (2). Thus, this IRB-approved study investigated the effects of increased heart rate induced by passive static stretching on sleep quality among 18-22 year old college students. Male and female college students of aged 18-22 (n=13) completed a regimen of 10, one minute passive static stretches prior to sleep for a duration of two weeks with students self monitoring heart rates. Overall sleep quality was assessed using questions adopted from the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index. Results of this study indicated that while the passive static stretch regimen significantly increased (p=0.000528) heart rate prior to sleeping, a positive correlation between the percent change in heart rate and percent change of subjective sleep quality scores was not demonstrated (R=0.0983). The pre and post sleep assessment scores were not significantly different for either group (experiment group p=0.424823, control group p=0.318507). Average morning heart rates (60-80 bpm = range of normal resting HR) between the two groups (p=0.437006) showed no significant difference as well. This study showed that there was a significant change in heart rate as induced by passive static stretching among the experimental group, however, there was no correlation with overall quality of sleep.
