    Banned Books Awareness

    The first week of October each year is known as Banned Books Week. It is a time to bring awareness to the impact of banned books and to look at what has changed since the year prior. The American Library Association has reported that 2,571 individual titles were challenged in the year 2022, which is a 38% increase in challenges from 2021. The largest group of challengers are parents, followed by patrons and political parties. The two most targeted locations for banning books are public and school libraries. In the United States, Texas was the state with the highest number of challenged titles for the year 2022. From January 1 to August 31 of 2023, the American Library Association has seen a 20% increase in challenges when compared to the same reporting period from 2022. The increase is also seen in the running total of challenged titles. From the initial reporting period, 3,923 titles have been challenged this year. In 2022, the total for the entire year was only 2,571 titles. Texas is still the state with the highest number of challenged books this year

    VEILING LAWS AND AFFILIATED PROTESTS IN IRAN

    Veiling laws in Iran are the obligation for women to wear hijabs or headscarves and are based on Muslim religious beliefs that women must cover their head to remain modest and submit themselves to God.1 The Quran is not explicit on the topic of hijabs or headscarves and, as a result, some followers interpret it as a personal preference and others interpret it as a requirement.2 Iran’s veiling laws have been the topic of great scrutiny due to a horrific event that occurred on September 13, 2022, where a young woman, Mahsa Amini, was accused by the police of improperly wearing a headscarf.3 This led to her being arrested and beaten so brutally that she slipped into a coma and died only a couple days later.4 Mahsa Amini’s death has led to protests around Iran.5 These protests have become increasingly violent and resulted in thousands of Iranian citizens being injured, imprisoned, and killed.6 Further, it led to Iran being removed from the United Nations (UN) Commission on the Status of Women.7 This article will discuss in further detail the history of the veiling laws from their implementation up to current events and the future implications of these laws

    Comparing Distal Mucous Fistula Refeeding vs Non-Refeeding in Neonates with Intestinal Diseases

    Abstract Problem Intestinal failure is becoming an increasingly prevalent health condition present in neonates which results in the need for a small-bowel resection. From this, the neonate develops short bowel syndrome which impedes nutrient absorption resulting in the need for total parenteral nutrition (TPN). Although TPN improves nutritional status, there are potential negative complications. Distal mucous fistula refeeding may be an option to improve nutrition without complications. Purpose The purpose of this study is to investigate if distal mucous fistula refeeding can decrease the demand for TPN. Methods A quasi-experimental research study will be conducted from January 1st, 2024, through December 31st, 2024, among infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with short-bowel syndrome, defined by loss of 25% or more of the small intestine. Participants under 1-year-old who have had distal mucous fistula refeeding will be compared to those who have not regarding the time frame and amount of TPN required and any negative outcome associated with TPN. Conclusion This study will clarify if distal mucous fistula refeeding is a safer treatment for those with short bowel syndrome when compared to non-refeeding. This can be used as the formation of evidence-based practice in relation to short gut syndrome

    Generalizing the BipBip Algorithm and Evaluating its Components for use in Varying Applications

    With Cryptographic Capability Computing (C 3 ) quickly becoming a topic of interest and research for leading industry competitors, it is critical that each component used to enable such a system be maximally understood and optimized for different applications. BipBip is a proposed tweakable block cipher with dimensions that ideally cater to the address encryption required for C 3 . Despite its obvious utility, there are components that are unclear, specifications that seem arbitrary, and lacking implementational details that could be helpful. This paper aims to expand upon the principles covered previously, devise general steps to create similar tweakable block ciphers, and to propose a more generalized approach to the encryption of pointers in the C 3 model. To accomplish this, modifications to the implementation will be made and tested on FPGA devices to determine differences in size, speed, and security. The modifications will include changes to the linear functions, substitution boxes, number of rounds, and formulation of the round functions. While there are restrictions to what changes can be made without severely handicapping the security, the number of approaches is far more broad than indicated in the original specifications in the BipBip paper. As an example, specific values do not need to be used for the permutation layers. Additionally, there is no specific linear layer approach (e.g. binary circulant matrix) that needs to be used, and the substitution box implementation has many constructions that can fit within a given set of constraints. From these factors, it is evident that BipBip is a good starting point, but it has room for improvement and further research

    Analysis of Retrospective Health Screening Data for Potential Referrals Based on Newly Established Referral Criteria

    Background/Rationale/Statement of problem: Chronic disease state management is a main priority highlighted in the 2020-2022 Hardin County Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP). The ONU Healthwise Mobile Clinic currently provides screening services around Hardin County. However, patients are often referred to their physician or a hospital/urgent care due to out of range readings, but providers on the mobile clinic have no established way of making sure patients follow-through with the referrals or come back to the mobile clinic in the future. Our hypothesis is that implementing a standard follow-up procedure on the mobile clinic will increase the number of patients who follow-through with referrals or come back to the mobile clinic, thus positively impacting their overall health. Description of Research Methodology: Screening records from past events will also be analyzed to determine how many patients would have qualified for the current follow-up protocol. Future research- Patients currently are offered blood pressure, blood glucose, and cholesterol screening services on the mobile clinic. If a patient’s readings qualify for the protocol, a “Follow-Up Protocol Form” will be filled out and taken back to the school following the event. Patients will be contacted, if consented, in order to determine follow-up and/or to return to the mobile clinic and re-screen the same values. Doing so, we hope to improve patient screening values through consistent screening and patient education.     Water Life Cycle Assessment Education

    Wastewater treatment plays a critical role in protecting ecosystem, aquatic, and human health. Direct aquatic emissions discharged in effluent pose recognized threats to health and consume significant amounts of energy. Life Cycle Assessments (LCAs) of wastewater treatment have highlighted the large contribution of energy consumption to total environmental impacts. These studies typically focus on a single wastewater treatment plant and assume energy mix without considering local variation. As infrastructure investment, repair, and upgrades are becoming more prioritized, it is important that a life cycle perspective is taken, and that future engineers are prepared to take this perspective. Currently LCA, and even sustainability education, is not taught in most engineering classrooms. Additionally, traditional teaching methods are typically not sufficient in teaching sustainability education, and other teaching pedagogies have been employed with various degrees of success. To successfully educate engineering students on LCA and sustainability in the wastewater process, we plan on combining LCA, wastewater treatment, and curricular development. The final educational product will be a week-long module and homework that can be easily distributed to other institutions for use in LCA education. The module will be used at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels to determine if the methods used are sufficient in giving a brief education on LCA and sustainability at different education levels. The module will be remodeled based on student perceptions, and more quantifiable data will be implemented as research progresses
