Mindfulness as a Means to a Better Politics
Get PDFMost people can recall a discussion or social situation in which their political views conflicted with those of other participants. A recent poll conducted of Ohioans by the Institute for Civics and Public Policy found that two-thirds of respondents reported they had strained personal relationships because of the political environment and nearly 8 in 10 agreed that the current political environment was as toxic as it had ever been in their lifetimes.
Participating in society means coexisting with others and self-governance requires that individuals are able to come together to solve collective problems. With people feeling polarized within the current political climate, mindfulness can help remedy our civic engagement
Community Involvement in Environmental Restoration in Maunalua, HI

Mālama Maunalua (MM) is an environmental non-profit based locally in Maunalua Bay, Oahu, Hawai\u27i. My internship with MM included a broad variety of responsibilities across multiple environmental and community-based projects. Those projects include invasive alien algae removal, community outreach events, educational programs, the Follow the Drop initiative, coral, fish, and benthic layer surveys, using native sea urchins as a biocontrol, use of rain gauges, and volunteering with other non-profit organizations. The research project I led was examining native seagrass restoration in Maunalua Bay. One of the main responsibilities in the organization was leading community events. Maunalua Bay has been a high impact area from invasive alien algae species and our main event is bringing local community members to the beach huki (to remove) these invasive species. In addition to those Huki Events, MM teaches in local classrooms and as volunteers at the Y. Furthermore, MM joins other organizations that are local and volunteer-based. In all of these diverse projects that address many environmental sectors in Maunalua Bay, community involvement was key. My project looks farther into how community individuals, organizations, and volunteers shape the environment and how MM’s approach to community can be utilized to address environmental concerns in other regions.

The Effect of Resiliency Training on Registered Nurses\u27 Job Satisfaction

Problem: Nursing is a highly stressful career and with low levels of resiliency, nurses are becoming burnt out and unsatisfied with their jobs. When nurses are unsatisfied in their work, they leave their current position.
Purpose: The purpose of this project is to determine if a resiliency training program can increase nurses’ job satisfaction.
Methods: This researcher is proposing a quasi-experimental study in which one hundred registered nurses at Blanchard Valley Hospital will undergo resiliency training. The participants in the study will complete the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC) and the Job Satisfaction Scale (JSS) pre-intervention, three months post-intervention, six months post-intervention, and twelve months post-intervention.
Conclusion: By developing resiliency, a deeply intrinsic trait, nurses will be able to cope with stressful situations more effectively and become more satisfied with their work. When nurses are satisfied at their job, they stay. Developing resilient nurses may be a potential solution to the nursing shortage and staffing crises
Paycheck Protection Program: Designed to Fail

Within this analysis, this paper focuses on the preparation of the Small Business Administration for the distribution of these funds using banks to small businesses with the use of Inspector General reports. Furthermore, I analyze the results between FinTech lending and traditional banking when it came to the detection of suspicious behavior during the application process to receive these loans through conducted research. Additionally, this paper will be discussing the lack of action within these policies regarding fraud prevention and how this affects the following regarding prosecution of fraud. Finally, it will discuss the implications of this program for future financial relief programs, and how it may impact the criminal justice system

Abstract:
The purpose of this presentation is to educate and inform health care professionals and the general population about the impact that misinformation and its spread can have on medical decisions and pharmaceutical practice. Currently, many state boards of pharmacy do not have consequences for the spread of misinformation, also referred to as false information. Each states’ board of pharmacy website was reviewed to identify any specific protocols in regards to misinformation. Additionally, each pharmacy boards’ protocol was compared to the protocol of other boards of medicine existing within the state. It is important to advocate for the spread of correct information so patients can make informed decisions about their healthcare. This issue was noted to have an especially high impact during the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic emphasized the concern of many pharmacists surrounding possible legal actions that can be taken against pharmacy licenses and a subsequent growing hesitancy to provide pharmacy services amidst misinformation. Overall, this presentation will provide valuable information to patients, providers, and educators about misinformation and its consequences on public health
Assessment of Morphological and Genetic Variation in Ohio Populations of Dusky Darter (Percina sciera)
No full textField observations made by fisheries biologists with the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency have recently noted dusky darter (Percina sciera) that display features characteristic of blackside darter (P. maculata) in southern Ohio. This study examines morphological and genetic variation of dusky and blackside darters captured from multiple locations within Ohio, including those inhabiting southern Ohio. Individuals were collected by electrofishing and euthanized and stored in 95% ethanol for subsequent morphological and genetic analyses. Genomic DNA (gDNA) was extracted from individual fin clips, and the presence of gDNA was confirmed by agarose gel electrophoresis. Two mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) loci were successfully amplified using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and sequenced via the Sanger method. Preliminary phylogenetic analyses of mtDNA sequences from captured individuals have recovered three monophyletic clades that correspond to dusky darter, blackside darter, and putatively morphologically distinct individuals collected from southern Ohio. On-going analyses of morphological variation largely corroborate the phylogenetic analyses and suggest cryptic speciation within Percina of southern Ohio. These results not only have implications for Ohio’s freshwater biodiversity, but also conservation and management of the state’s native ichthyofauna
Evaluation of antidepressant and anxiolytic medications in mice lacking either regulators of G-protein signalling 2 or 4
No full textRegulator of G protein-signaling (RGS) proteins are a family of more than 30 intracellular proteins that negatively modulate signaling pathways of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). GPCRs play an important role in mediating the effects of neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, which in turn play an important role in psychiatric disorders such as anxiety and depression. Importantly, polymorphisms in the RGS2 gene result in increased vulnerability to anxiety and depression in humans. Additionally, mice lacking RGS2 show anxiety- and depression-like behaviors. Similarly, mice lacking RGS4 have shown disruption in dopamine signaling. However, the effects of antidepressants (fluoxetine & desipramine) and anxiolytics (diazepam & buspirone) used in humans have not been systematically evaluated in male and female mice lacking RGS2 and RGS4. This study was designed to address this gap in knowledge. The antidepressant-like and anxiolytic-like effects of these drugs were assessed using the tail suspension and elevated plus maze tests, respectively. Findings from this study will help explain the effects of deletion of either RGS2 or RGS4 on the effects of anxiolytic and antidepressant medications used in humans. The data from the study is currently being analyzed
