    Impact of children’s mental health parenting guide on parent’s knowledge and comfortability with mental health topics

    Background: The Ohio Department of Health identified suicide as the leading cause of death for children ages 10 to 14. Understanding the signs of declining mental health allows parents/caregivers to assist their children in seeking help when necessary. By creating “The Parenting Playbook”, a mental health booklet with links to additional videos and articles, parents have a centralized location to browse for information and educate themselves. The purpose of this study is to assess the effects of the playbook on knowledge and comfortability with mental health topics and track usage for linked supplemental resources. This study could improve future mental health projects for parents of young children, especially in rural communities with limited resources and stigmatized mental health. Methodology: This IRB exempt study aimed to gauge the pre- and post- knowledge and comfort in handling mental health situations for the parents/caregivers of 4th-6th graders in Hardin County, Ohio. Parents/caregivers were given a 27 question pre-survey where they rated their comfort and assessed their knowledge on mental health. Then parents/caregivers received the “Parenting Playbook” as part of take-home supplemental mental health activities. After, participants were given post-surveys with the same 27 survey questions and 5 additional opinion-based questions regarding the playbook. All students and parents/caregivers were given the playbook and activities regardless of consent but only those who consented were included for analysis. Hardcopy papers were coded into an electronic spreadsheet and all data was de-identified for analysis. Results: Research in Progress. Conclusion: Research in Progress

    Low-dose psilocybin enhances novel object recognition but not inhibitory avoidance in adult rats

    Given the recently renewed interest in using psychedelics to aid in the treatment of psychological disorders, we aimed to examine the impact of psilocybin, a 5-HT2A agonist, on learning and memory in rodents. Previous work has demonstrated that psilocybin and other 5-HT2A agonists can enhance fear conditioning, fear extinction, and novel object recognition (NOR). Thus, we predicted that low doses of psilocybin would enhance inhibitory avoidance (IA) and NOR memory. In the first experiment, adult male and female Sprague-Dawley rats underwent step-through IA training (involving 0.45, 0.65, or 1 mA scrambled footshock) and were injected intraperitoneally (i.p.) with vehicle (0.9% saline) or psilocybin (1 mg/kg) immediately afterward. Rats were tested for their IA memory two days later. In the second experiment, adult male and female Sprague-Dawley rats were acclimated to an open field apparatus for 5 minutes on Day 1. The next day, the rats were given i.p. injections of vehicle or psilocybin (0.1 mg/kg) 10 minutes before undergoing NOR training, during which they were exposed to two replicas of an identical object for 3 minutes. On Day 3, one of the objects from NOR training was exchanged for a novel object; rats were exposed to this novel object and a new replica of the object from Day 2 (i.e., familiar object) for 5 minutes. The results showed that psilocybin had no significant impact on IA memory but enhanced novel object recognition memory in both males and females. The differential impact of psilocybin on IA memory and novel object recognition could be explained by the different doses of psilocybin or the different times of drug administration used for each task. Alternatively, they may suggest that psilocybin exerts distinct effects on different types of learning

    CEASE Bundle to Reduce Alarm Fatigue in Nurses on Cardiac Intensive Care Units

    Abstract Problem: One piece of technology that is found in every Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU), and contributes to the most alarms, is the cardiac telemetry system. Though this piece of technology is very beneficial, it is very sensitive and generates an abundance of false alarms causing nurses to ignore them which can lead to missed emergent alarms and death. Aims: The purpose of this project is to investigate whether CVICU nurses’ level of alarm fatigue decreases in facilities where the CEASE Bundle is implemented. Methods: This is a quasi-experimental, mixed-methods study that uses pre-implementation and post-implementation surveys and data reports, following an educational session and CEASE Bundle implementation on a 36-bed CVICU. Researchers investigate the relationship between the CEASE Bundle and the total number of alarms, the duration of alarms, nurses’ perception of alarm fatigue, and the number of adverse effects related to alarms. Conclusions: By increasing the knowledge of how and when to use the cardiac telemetry device and implementing measures to ensure accurate readings, the number of “nuisance” alarms decreases, leaving most alarms to be indicative of an important patient condition change. Not only does this improve nursing satisfaction and performance, but it also improves patient outcomes and patient satisfaction

    Impact of Vaccination Status on Pediatric Organ Transplant Infection Risk

    Problem: Pediatric transplant patients are at an increased risk for infection postoperatively. There is a lack of knowledge on the correlation between vaccination status and infection rates in transplant patients. Up-to-date vaccination status pre-transplant is recommended to decrease the risk of infection. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to compare infection rates of pediatric transplant patients’ who have up-to-date vaccinations to those whose vaccinations are not up-to-date. Methods: A retrospective pre-post chart review of 100 pediatric post-transplant patients at Nationwide Children’s Hospital will be conducted. Patient vaccination status pre-transplant, results of infectious disease screenings pre-transplant, and diagnosis of infectious disease post-transplant for up to one -year will be variables. Patients who were immunocompromised prior to transplantation will be excluded. Conclusion: Up-to-date vaccinations improve pediatric transplant patients’ outcomes, decrease length of stay times, and decrease cost of care. The study will contribute to decreasing the cost of care for pediatric organ transplant patients which will benefit the hospital financially
