    Parasocial Relationships Within Mass Media

    No full text
This presentation describes the double-edged sword of parasocial relationships or PSR within mass media. Parasocial relationships are described as “where one person extends emotional energy, interest, and time, and the other party, the persona, is completely unaware of the other\u27s existence.” These relationships can create the illusion of a legitimate relationship for the consumer, all while potentially leading to dangerous obsession. This phenomenon has been studied since the 1950s but has matured and spread rapidly due to the rise of social media and the 2020 lockdowns, where people looked online for their relationships and social connections. This presentation will describe the rise of PSR and the harmful effects it can have on young people. Inversely, this presentation will explore the potential positive effects PSR can have with those who have difficulty socializing

    Moon Over Manifest

    No full text
In entertainment, adapting media to different formats is a growing trend. My capstone project was to take the young adult novel Moon Over Manifest by Clare Vanderpool and create a first draft for a stage play. To maintain artistic integrity, I transcribed the dialogue written by Vanderpool and noted what was most important to the story she was telling. The transcription was my starting point for writing my script, learning Vanderpool\u27s voice, and making edits to translate Vanderpool\u27s 2D story into a 3D space. I was able to put an abridged version of my script into a performance with nine other actors providing the voices and physical presence of over twenty characters. Having my adaptation read allowed and performed in a physical space with a live audience provided key insight into what information audiences did not get, what phrasing flowed better on the page versus out of the mouth, and what basic performance elements were needed. With this knowledge, second draft revisions will be focused and better informed to tell Clare Vanderpool\u27s story through my lens

The Influence of Cover Art on Fantasy Novels

    No full text
The design of book cover art across Fantasy novels provides insight into the unique visual languages used to captivate readers. This art plays a pivotal role in the marketing and sales of such novels. Evaluating the recognizable visual differences of cover art provides relevant insights into the aesthetic preferences of each genre\u27s target audience. By understanding these distinctions in such an art form, publishers can effectively communicate the substance of a novel and attract readers who seek immersive experiences within their favorite genres. I will be using marketing and ethnographic research strategies to understand how book cover art can impact book sales. I will also be conducting a literature review. A questionnaire will gauge consumer opinions, and will hopefully aid in determining what compels a reader to pick up a certain book. I will also utilize self-ethnography to find which books are put on display. I can then collect images of physical books along with online images. I can then also assess how I, as a reader, find which books visually appeal to me. The final tactic that will be used is a communications audit. I will be looking at the most popular books from the fantasy genre in an attempt to find the most common art and marketing themes. This will help in finding which cover styles the general public values more

Teaching Whole Person Care for Healthcare Professionals

    No full text
Student pharmacists are trained to care for every aspect of patients’ lives as a pharmacist. One aspect that is neglected is their spiritual needs. While the various dimensions of wellness are often alluded to, very few medical professionals are trained in how to approach spiritual wellness. Whole person care integrates spirituality into patient care, so that healthcare teams can care for a patient’s emotional, psychological and spiritual needs along with their physical needs. A newly created, student-led professional development program will be offered to student pharmacists, nursing students, pre-professional students, pharmacists and nurses at Ohio Northern University. The training includes how to take a spiritual history, how to assess spiritual needs, and the ethics of spiritual care. The goal is for attendees to be able to explain holistic patient care and learn practical tips for integrating spiritual health into traditional practice. A pre- and post-survey will be administered to attendees to gauge the knowledge gained and evaluate the effectiveness of the training. The survey will assess the attendees’ understanding of whole person care and whether they feel better equipped to assess and address their patients’ spiritual needs. The results from the research are still in progress and will be provided at the presentation

The Method Validation of the Quantification of Methamphetamine Using MPIC

Isotopologues are nearly chemically identical to each other while still distinguishable on mass spectrometers due to the difference in atomic mass. Deuterium (²H or D) is an isotope of hydrogen with one additional neutron and is thus one atomic mass unit heavier than hydrogen. Isotopically labeled drugs are currently utilized as internal standards in the field of forensic toxicology. This is due to blood being a matrix that requires extraction prior to analysis and extraction processes do not have a uniform yield thus requiring a known concentration to compare the post-extraction concentration to. In Multipoint Internal Calibration (MPIC) different deuterated standards: methamphetamine D₅, D₈, D₉, D₁₁, and D₁₄ were added into the same sample at differing concentrations, 1000 ng/mL, 600 ng/mL, 300 ng/mL, 100 ng/mL, and 10 ng/mL, respectively. Six different concentrations of methamphetamine: 49.6 ng/mL, 120 ng/mL, 456 ng/mL, 552 ng/mL, 720 ng/mL, and 800 ng/mL were tested and their concentrations calculated. Each of these concentrations was sampled in triplicate for each of the 5 replicate extractions

    Comparing Sex Education

Keywords: Abstinence only sex ed (AO), comprehensive sex education (CSE), risk perception, sexual health, safer sex, education policies, adolescent pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), contraception availability. Problem: The curriculum for sex education in the United States varies among school systems. With this great discrepancy, there is potential for rising issues with rates of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) as well as general sexual health of adolescence. The perceptions of these individuals influences their actions and attitudes related to sex. Purpose: The purpose of this project is to compare the perceptions of individuals who had comprehensive sex education (CSE) to those who had abstinence only sex education (AO). Methods and Evaluation: The design for this project is a descriptive comparative study. A multi-part, researcher-developed survey will be mailed to 300 individuals across the country who have attended grade school or high school in the USA and who are no younger than 18 years old. Participants will evaluate their perceptions of the effectiveness of their sex education curriculum. Perceptions of those who received CSE will be compared to those who received AO education. Conclusion: If there are more positive perceptions of comprehensive sex education, individuals are more likely to utilize the information they learned. The actions that are potentially impacted include contraception use, first sexual encounter, STIs, and adolescent pregnancy. Schools in the USA should consider implementing the comprehensive curriculum to positively impact students

Inclusivity and Belonging: Qualitative Impact of Nursing Student Organizations

    No full text
Problem: Student attrition rates increase when students do not feel included or a sense of belonging. There is little to no evidence as to what improves nursing students’ sense of belonging and inclusion. Purpose: The purpose of this project is to describe the experience of nursing students involved in nursing student organizations in relation to their sense of belonging and inclusion. Methods: In this qualitative study, a list of preliminary activities for National Student Nurses’ Association (NSNA) and a professional nursing fraternity were planned for the 2023-2024 academic year. At the beginning of the academic year, a pre-survey identified perspectives of nursing students on how both organizations support student inclusivity and belonging. Pre-survey qualitative data was analyzed for themes based on the answers. Nursing students completed post-surveys during the end of February to the beginning of March to evaluate how activities impacted students’ sense of belonging and inclusion. Results: Four themes were identified based on the pre-survey: Mentorship, Giving Back, Connections, and Nursing Community. Post-survey data is currently being analyzed. Conclusion: Nursing student organizations aim to better prepare nursing students for a nursing career through networking, mentorship, service, and education. By being involved in nursing organizations, students gain a sense of belonging and inclusion in the nursing program that ultimately retains and prepares the students for professional careers. Opportunities were identified for student organization growth that will guide programming moving forward, therefore promoting a sense of belonging and inclusion

Implementation of a de-escalation training program on incidence of violence and nurses\u27 perception

    No full text
Abstract Problem: Registered nurses record the highest incidences of workplace violence, ranking above prison guards and police officers, making them five times more likely to experience violence than any other occupation. Intervention studies regarding implementation of de-escalation training in hospitals is scarce. Workplace violence has become tolerated and is under-reported. This has allowed the incidence of violence to be perceived as “part of the job” by nurses and other personnel involved in patient care. Purpose: The purpose of this research is to determine if a de-escalation training program reduces the incidence of workplace violence and increases the nurses’ confidence in recognizing and responding to violence in the hospital setting. Methods: A mixed methods design will be used for this study. The pre- and post-test will utilize a Likert scale to evaluate participants’ perceptions of workplace violence. The results from the pre-test will be compared to the post-test after a de-escalation training program is completed. Conclusion: Research shows that the implementation of a de-escalation training program in the hospital setting has significantly decreased incidence of violence and improves nurses’ perceptions toward violence in the workplace. Nurses and other patient care personnel become more confident in recognizing and responding to aggressive behavior following de-escalation training
