The Auditing and Legal Implications of the FTX Collapse

    No full text
This research provides background on the third largest cryptocurrency exchange during the time of its operations, FTX Trading Ltd. After providing a brief backstory, the paper outlines situations that took place within the company that led to its demise. These situations demonstrate the relationship between FTX Trading Ltd. and Alameda Research, the organization’s improper usage of customer funds, the violation of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, the company’s misleading statements and acts to the public, illegal computer code changes, a lack of governance and risk management procedures, auditing procedures that were not followed, noncompliance with regulations, the lack of professional judgment and skepticism on behalf of the external auditor and the inherent lack of an internal audit function. These issues were major in the dissolution of FTX Trading Ltd., but were not the only events that took place that led the company to its imminent bankruptcy. FTX could have still been here today if the company did not find themselves in these situations. Additionally, if proper risk measures were implemented, the same could be true

Short-term Effects of Caffeine Supplementation on Cardiac Dynamics and Anaerobic Strength Output in Collegiate Male Athletes

ABSTRACT. Caffeine, a widely consumed drug, has been shown to significantly increase heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (Geethavani et al., 2014), but had only insignificant changes in these cardiovascular measurements (Alhabeeb et al., 2022); while Matsumara and his colleagues (2023) reported that caffeine decreased 100-meter sprint times indicating that caffeine may improve anaerobic performance. The current study investigated the short-term effects of caffeine on heart rate (HR, beats per minute), blood pressure (mmHg), and 20-yard sprint performance time (seconds; Dashr Sprint Timing System). These parameters were measured in triplicate before and at 45-minutes after caffeine supplementation at a dose of 4 mg/kg among ten male collegiate athletes aged 18-22. Based on this study, a trend was observed in that the percent change for mean arterial pressure (MAP, 13%) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP, 19%) increased post-caffeine supplementation among non-habitual caffeine drinkers, however, these were not significantly different from those of habitual caffeine consumers. Overall, regardless of caffeine intake behavior, results demonstrated that while caffeine significantly increased both systolic blood pressure (SBP) (p = 0.008) and MAP (p = 0.0185) levels, it did not significantly decrease sprint speed (p = 0.397) indicating lack of improvement in anaerobic strength output due to caffeine supplementation

FDA Greenlights Early-Stage Trial for Investigational Long COVID Treatment: Phase II Evaluation Pending

    Get PDF
Long coronavirus disease (COVID) is a condition that affects millions of individuals worldwide. Long COVID manifests as persistent symptoms following acute COVID-19. These symptoms can include, but are not limited to, fatigue, cognitive dysfunction, and chronic inflammation often lasting for months and significantly impairing patients\u27 quality of life. As the number of Long COVID cases continues to rise and major global health organizations begin to standardize Long COVID’s mechanisms and diagnosis, there is an increasing demand for effective treatments that can address its complex nature. While some therapies, such as metformin and hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) have shown promise in symptom management, these treatments have limitations in terms of efficacy, accessibility, and cost. Bezisterim, an investigational anti-inflammatory drug, has recently gained Food and Drug Administration (FDA) authorization for a clinical trial to address the persistent symptoms of Long COVID. This milestone represents a significant advancement in the ongoing search for effective treatments for post-viral syndromes. Long COVID continues to pose challenges with millions of patients experiencing debilitating symptoms and limited therapeutic options. Bezisterim\u27s ability to modulate chronic inflammation offers promising potential to alleviate these symptoms and improve patient outcomes. The results of these trials could have far-reaching implications and offer new hope for patients suffering from Long COVID and other chronic inflammatory diseases. This paper explores the drug\u27s mechanism of action, the significance of the FDA’s trial authorization, and the ongoing research efforts to address unmet clinical needs

Opinions on Gun Policy and How Information Can Influence Them

    No full text
Prevalent mass shootings are a uniquely American phenomenon. In order to implement regulations that could prevent these disastrous events, it is important to understand public opinion on gun control. There are a myriad of popular policies that could serve as possible solutions to this public health crisis. These include universal background checks, assault weapon bans, age requirements, and safe storage and training requirements. As an addition to my senior thesis examining the intersection between effectiveness and justness for gun control policies, I will be investigating if public opinion on gun policy can be swayed with new information. People have varying opinions, and in order to pass gun control policy, there must be public support. By exposing individuals to data that backs up the effectiveness of policies, I will be testing if their opinions are able to be influenced. ONU students will be asked about their opinions on gun control and will then be exposed to a passage that offers data backing up the effectiveness of a specific policy. I will then be examining which groups of students, based on prior opinions, are most influenced by the passage. The goal of this project is to determine if gun policy opinions can be impacted by exposure to new information
