The Benefit of Skin-to-skin contact Postpartum in Premature Infants for Mom and Baby
Problem: Skin-to-skin contact (SSC) is not always initiated or offered to mothers and babies. SSC has shown how beneficial it is for both the mother and neonate especially when neonates are preterm. Protocols where SSC is offered in the NICU for at least one hour per day if the neonate is stable can help their health outcomes.
Purpose: The purpose of this project is to determine if daily skin-to-skin contact between postpartum mom and/or dad and the premature infant improve outcomes of the mom and infant compared to not having daily skin to skin contact.
Methods: This is a mixed methods study comparing outcomes of neonates and moms who use SSC daily to those who do not. Neonatal physiological measures, including vital signs, activity, sleep duration, weight gain, and feeding will be collected. Mothers’ vital signs, cortisol levels, and postpartum depression screening will be collected. Interviews will be conducted to determine mother’s perspective and of the impact of SSC on health outcomes.
Conclusion: It is expected that neonates who receive daily SSC will have better vitals, weight gain, sleep schedule, and more likely to breastfeed compared to those who do not. For mothers, it is expected that daily SSC will have a better bond with their baby, have lower blood pressure and heart rate, and less likely to have postpartum depression
Mechanical vs Manual Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation in the Prehospital Setting
Abstract
Problem: Out-of-hospital cardiac arrests make up a significant portion of worldwide morbidity
and mortality. The most important factor in patient survival is early and high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation, which may not always be achieved due to human error. Additionally, during EMS transport, it is increasingly difficult to deliver quality compression.
Purpose: The purpose of this research project is to determine if the implementation of LUCAS devices and mechanical compressions during cardiac arrest has increased patient survival rates and better outcomes compared to manual compressions.
Methods: A retrospective comparative design will be utilized. EMS providers within northwest Ohio who respond to cardiac arrest using LUCAS devices or manual compressions will participate. EKGs and transthoracic impedance data from defibrillators and monitors during transport will be analyzed to determine the efficiency of the compressions given. Patient post resuscitation data from the hospital will be used to determine survival rates and outcomes. LUCAS device and manual compression data will be compared.
Conclusion: Mechanical compressions during EMS transport have been found to result in more consistent and quality compressions. This leads to improved patient survival rates and positive outcomes
Surveying for Snake Fungal Pathogen Ophidiomyces ophiodiicola at Ohio Northern University Tidd-Oakes Farm
Ophidiomyces ophiodiicola, a fungal pathogen that causes Snake Fungal Disease (SFD), has been implicated in population declines in North America and Eurasia. Currently there is no cure. SFD can lead to lesions on and behavioral changes of snakes altering mobility, feeding, and thermoregulation. Snakes with lesions have been reported at Ohio Northern University’s Tidd-Oakes Farm, providing impetus to survey for the pathogen. Coverboard and visual encounter surveys are proposed from May to August. Standardized skin swabs are to be collected and quantitative PCR used to determine prevalence of O. ophiodiicola across host species and over time. We predict variations in prevalence associated with activity (e.g. snake reproductive periods) and with temperature changes across seasons. Thermoregulatory behaviors of the snakes and optimal thermal conditions of the pathogen are predicted to influence pathogen prevalence across species and individual snake pathogen loads
Effects of Manipulated Reaction Time and the Enhancement of Images on Attractiveness and Trustworthiness
A 2x2 between-subject design examined the effect of image enhancement and reaction time on perceived attractiveness and trustworthiness of 24 male and female faces of various racial backgrounds. Mixed findings within research suggest, along with attractiveness, perceived trustworthiness of an individual may be impacted by the enhancement of images. Research also suggests that the variable of reaction time can have an influence on attractiveness and trustworthiness. The results of the current study only showed significant increases in attractiveness scores between the variables of reaction time. Specifically, the immediate reaction time led to significantly higher attractiveness ratings than the delayed reaction time group. The effect of image type on trustworthiness and attractiveness was not significant, and there were no significant interaction effects
The Complexity of Popular Apps\u27 User Interfaces
In the digital world, smartphone apps have absorbed peoples\u27 lives. The average American spends over four hours daily browsing social media or playing games on their phone according to PCMag. A large part of an app\u27s success is the creation and integration of a well-designed User Interface. Apps like Instagram and Snapchat have seemingly mastered UI, making it easy for users to mindlessly make decisions to move from one post to the next for hours on end. One of the most popular apps with one of the most recognizable interfaces is Instagram. In this project, I want to explore why Instagram\u27s UI is so successful, as well as understand why or why not its complex interface works comparative to a simple one. Sketching and utilizing wire-frame applications to build a simplified version of Instagram will allow for a side-by-side comparison to the original app. Creating a simplified prototype of Instagram, A/B testing can determine the results that major UI changes have on users. To understand different UI types, competitor profiling, can highlight both successful and unsuccessful interface designs. Eventually an unstructured interview discussing how the UI changes influence how the user uses the app and how it makes them feel. By studying the most successful UI designs as well as gaining direct user feedback comparing the real Instagram interface to my improved/simplified interface, I will be able to see how users feel about interface changes, and how they react to them
On Artificial Intelligence’s Impact on Politics
Despite its prevalence in popular culture, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is often misunderstood by the public. Usually trained by the wealth of data on the internet, AI models identify associations with words and images to create new content, whether text, audio, photo, or video. AI has already begun to take root in the political scene, with several deep fakes of politicians circulating and one scandal involving ChatGPT generating fake legal citations. Some politicians have already indicated their support for regulating AI, and some political precedent indicates it will likely move forward
A Multi-Level Structure for High-Precision Binary Decoders
Binary decoders are ubiquitous in digital circuits for computing, particularly within memory addressing and demultiplexing. A commonly used method for constructing binary decoders is the coincident row-column structure, which uses two smaller decoders intersecting over an array of AND gates to generate the output of the decoder as a whole. While this works for the typical sizes of modern computers (under 128 bits), it still has room for improvement. Furthermore, this structure is not scalable to high input precisions, such as above 1024 bits. In this work, we propose a multi-level structure for binary decoders suitable for high-precision inputs, as a generalization of the existing row-column decoder. We compare our novel structure to the aforementioned row-column method, a tree-based structure, and other single-level decoder constructs, and analyze complexity as a function of input precision
Looking Into the Future of Petroleum: What is the Next Step?
Consumers are becoming more aware of where and what they are spending their money on and they are becoming more and more eco-friendly. The petroleum industry is particularly being targeted as a non eco-friendly industry, this extends out to the gas-guzzling cars and planes the petroleum fuels. This research paper discusses the socio-cultural impact consumer perceptions have on industries, the environmental impact the petroleum industry makes, and alternative substitutions to the industry and their impacts to look into the future of the petroleum industry and their competitors
Kenton City School District Transportation Engineering Analysis
My civil engineering capstone project focuses on utilizing engineering expertise to support the Kenton City School District (KCSD) in funding their new Middle-High School. Centered around the Ohio Department of Transportation\u27s Safe Routes to School (SRTS) program and its $500,000 grant, the goal is to enhance safety through on-site sidewalk improvements, potentially freeing resources for additional school facilities. My specific honors capstone enhancement task involves addressing concerns raised by the KCSD regarding parking capacity and traffic flow during events utilizing both the gym and the performing arts center. The focus is on optimizing parking and entrance/exit solutions for such occasions, particularly in the back of the building. To tackle this, I conducted a study including analysis of existing parking facilities and the potential integration of an additional parking lot, specifically the westernmost one. By estimating event attendance based on gym and performing arts center seating capacity, I aimed to understand parking demand and optimize utilization of existing and potential parking spaces. Moreover, the study focuses on striping configurations for the rear parking lots to maximize capacity and entrance/exit availability. This approach not only addresses immediate parking concerns during events but also enhances overall school infrastructure functionality and convenience. In summary, the capstone project integrates funding acquisition through the SRTS program with a targeted enhancement to tackle parking challenges during dual events at the new Middle-High School. Through this comprehensive approach, the study strives to create a safer, more accessible school environment while optimizing resource utilization for the KCSD’s benefit
