A Comparative Study on the Perception of Accents and Language Comprehension of Chinese English Learners by Native English and Chinese Speakers
Get PDFThis study investigates how English native speakers and Chinese native speakers perceive the accent and comprehend the speech of Chinese English learners. While extensive research has examined the intelligibility of foreign-accented English, little attention has been paid to the comparative evaluation of accented speech by interlocutors from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Building on the framework of interlanguage speech intelligibility benefit (ISIB), this research aims to determine whether Chinese listeners gain advantages from shared phonological features with Chinese English learners and whether English listeners maintain superior overall comprehension despite unfamiliar accent patterns. The experiment recruited six Chinese learners of English as talkers and twenty listeners, including ten native English speakers and ten native Chinese speakers. Materials consisted of lexical items and sentence comprehension tasks containing typical features of Chinese-accented English such as /r/-/l/ confusion, final consonant deletion, and tone interference. Pre-test, exposure, and post-test procedures were used to assess accent perception, speech intelligibility, and short-term adaptation. Results suggest that Chinese listeners benefit from shared L1 phonological transfer in specific contexts, such as final consonant deletion, whereas English listeners outperform Chinese listeners in overall intelligibility and sentence comprehension. Short-term exposure was found to facilitate perceptual adaptation for both groups, but generalization to new talkers remained limited. The findings highlight the complex interplay between listener background, accent familiarity, and adaptation in shaping speech perception. They also provide implications for English language pedagogy in China and for cross-cultural communication between Chinese and English speakers
Traffic Signal Priority Control Based on Traffic Wave Theory
Get PDFWith the continuous growth in vehicle ownership, urban traffic congestion has become increasingly severe. Traditional transportation systems and urban road expansion are no longer sufficient to alleviate congestion or meet the mobility needs of residents. In recent years, the rapid development of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV) and vehicle–infrastructure cooperative technologies has opened new avenues for intelligent traffic management. In particular, how to effectively utilize the real-time information from connected vehicles and smart infrastructure to control the movement of connected buses and optimize traffic signal phases at intersections has become a key strategy for improving urban traffic efficiency.
This study focuses on signal timing optimization at connected signalized intersections. First, a vehicle waiting time prediction method based on traffic wave theory is introduced to estimate queue dynamics more accurately. Then, a connected transit signal priority (TSP) control model is developed, aiming to minimize the weighted waiting time of both connected buses and general traffic. The model is solved using a genetic algorithm to obtain the optimal signal timing strategy, thereby achieving effective signal priority control for connected buses
The Effect of Systematic Health Education on Perioperative Nursing Outcomes in Breast Cancer Patients
Get PDFObjective: This study aimed to evaluate the impact of structured systematic health education on self-care ability, psychological well-being, quality of life (QoL), and nursing satisfaction among breast cancer patients during the perioperative period. Methods: A prospective controlled trial was conducted at a tertiary hospital between February and December 2018. Sixty postoperative breast cancer patients were randomly allocated into an intervention group (n = 30) and a control group (n = 30). The control group received standard perioperative nursing care, whereas the intervention group received additional structured health education interventions including preoperative lectures, individualized counseling, guided rehabilitation, and post-discharge support. Standardized assessment tools—Exercise of Self-Care Agency Scale (ESCA), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), EORTC QLQ-C30, and a self-designed nursing satisfaction questionnaire—were used to evaluate outcomes before and after the intervention. Results: Compared to the control group, patients in the intervention group demonstrated significantly higher ESCA scores, lower HADS anxiety and depression scores, improved QLQ-C30 outcomes, and higher nursing satisfaction (P < 0.05). Graphical analysis demonstrated that the intervention group consistently outperformed the control group across all assessment domains. Conclusion: Structured systematic health education is a beneficial perioperative strategy for breast cancer patients. It improves psychological outcomes, promotes self-care behavior, enhances QoL, and increases satisfaction with nursing services. Health education should be integrated as a standard part of perioperative oncology nursing care
An Exploratory Study of How Police Background Investigators Use Social Media Screening to Identify Extremism Among Applicants
Get PDFThe institution of policing in the United States cannot function effectively unless the public has adequate confidence in the institution and trusts that officers are vetted for past criminal activity and extremism. Police background investigators thoroughly investigate each applicant's character, creditworthiness, social interactions, education, drug use, honesty, and integrity. Copies of credit scores are obtained, driving history records are examined, national and state criminal history checks are performed, and each applicant's personal history statement (PHS) is taken. Since the rise of social media, investigators have been challenged to gain access to and adequately screen applicant's social media posts to determine extremist memberships or tendencies, as well as past criminal activity. First Amendment protections for applicants in the United States can further hinder an investigator's access to private social media accounts. Past research focuses on ways social media posts can affect workplace hiring and screening of applicants in private industry and government agencies. This study seeks to fill the gap in research by focusing on the unique expectations of the public for law enforcement to screen their applicants at a higher level of scrutiny than private employers and the ethical and legal contexts in which they can accomplish this task effectively

As a political legacy of President Trump’s first term, the enforcement of HFCAA may be escalated upon his return to office, triggering systemic shocks to the valuation of Chinese concept stocks, U.S.-China financial ties, and the global market structure.
This study focuses on three critical dimensions of policy adjustments during the Trump administration: (1) trajectories of regulatory enhancement; (2) risks of financial decoupling between China and the U.S.; and (3) restructuring effects on international capital flows. It proposes that China should construct a strategic response system through: (a) establishing a legal counterbalancing mechanism framework; (b) refining its domestic capital market ecosystem; and (c) strengthening cross-border regulatory coordination and remedial mechanisms. The research aims to provide theoretical foundations and policy references for anticipating HFCAA regulatory evolution and fostering enhanced Sino-U.S. regulatory collaboration
Investigation of Criminal Offenses of Illegal Detention of Ukrainian Citizens (Civilian Prisoners of War) in the Times of War: Analysis of Efficiency and Ways of Improvement
Get PDFThe paper highlights the results of a study on the investigation of criminal offenses related to the illegal detention of Ukrainian citizens (civilian prisoners of war) in the territory of the Russian Federation and the temporarily occupied territories. The author analyzes the activities of law enforcement agencies of Ukraine in terms of the effectiveness of pre-trial investigation, in particular, making procedural decisions, conducting investigative (search) actions and collecting evidence, as well as bringing to criminal responsibility those responsible for the illegal detention of Ukrainian citizens. Based on the results of the analysis of practical cases, conclusions have been formulated and suggestions have been developed to improve the activities of law enforcement agencies of Ukraine in order to bring the Russian military and representatives of the occupation authorities to criminal responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity
Media Industry CSR and Green ESG: The Moderating Effect of Human-AI Digital Media Technology Innovation
Get PDFThis study investigates the impact of corporate social responsibility (CSR) practices in the media industry on green environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance, with a specific focus on the moderating role of human-AI digital media technology innovation. Using panel data from 2910 firm-year observations from Chinese listed companies between 2015 and 2022, we document a significant positive relationship between media industry CSR initiatives and green ESG performance. Furthermore, our findings reveal that human-AI digital media technology innovation strengthens this positive relationship, suggesting that technological advancement enhances the effectiveness of CSR activities in promoting environmental sustainability. The results remain robust across alternative specifications and methodologies. This study contributes to the growing literature on sustainability in the media sector and offers practical implications for firms and policymakers seeking to leverage technological innovation to advance green development goals
Measurement of County Relative Poverty, Spatial and Temporal Evolution and Risk Evaluation of Return to Poverty in Shaanxi Province Under the Perspective of Rural Revitalization
Get PDFAgainst the background of rural revitalization, this study makes an in-depth analysis of the measure, evolution and the risk of returning to poverty in the counties of counties in Shaanxi Province. By combining quantitative and qualitative methods, a multi-dimensional evaluation index system of relative poverty was constructed, and spatial autocorrelation model and geographical weighted regression model were used to analyze the measurement and spatiotemporal evolution of relative poverty in 78 counties (cities) in Shaanxi Province between 2014 and 2023. Furthermore, this study identified key influencing factors for the risk of returning to poverty and proposed targeted anti-poverty strategies. The results of this study show that the county relative poverty in Shaanxi province showed significant spatial agglomeration characteristics and obvious regional differences. Meanwhile, this study also found that factors such as education level, health conditions and industrial development had an important influence on the risk of returning to poverty. Based on this, this research puts forward policy suggestions such as strengthening education and medical investment and promoting industrial diversification development, in order to provide scientific basis and decision support for realizing the strategic goal of rural revitalization in Shaanxi Province

Research on the Challenges and Coping Strategies of Social Work Practice in Public Health Emergencies
Get PDFThis study explores the main challenges and coping strategies of social work practice in public health emergencies. By reviewing major public health events in history, the key role of social workers in the crisis is analyzed. The study found that the challenges social workers faced in responding to these events included issues such as limited resources, a shortage of professionals, and difficulties in cross-cultural communication, which led to increased stress and unequal distribution of resources in crisis response. In order to better play the role of social work and respond to public health emergencies, the study suggests that social workers can improve their professional ability and response speed, establish a sound psychological intervention mechanism, and optimize resource integration and cross-agency cooperation measures
