Longitudinal Effectiveness of Sexual and Gender Diversity Education for Japanese Students: from the perspective of inter-minority empathy, tendency to reject heterogeneity, and knowledge

In this study, we used a retrospective method to explore the longitudinal effects of the "sexual and gender diversity" education on non-LGBTQ+ people, as well as mediating factors other than the education. As results, those who had never taken the education had an " Image of the sexual minority person as a heterogeneous presence," those who took the education for the first time in high school had a "Realistic image of sexual minority individuals," and those who had taken the education continuously through high school had a "Existence of realistic sexual minority individuals." The content of the education that the students remembered was mostly about "visualizing sexual minorities" and "becoming closer to LGBTQ+ people," which are part of the process of forming an attitude that accepts sexual diversity (Kasai and Odo, 2018), and there was little about "inter-minority empathy," which includes "self-awareness." In other words, the current "sexual and gender diversity" education have not led non-LGBTQ+ people to perceive LGBTQ+ people as "the same as themselves" as part of "sexual diversity," and therefore it is suggested that "sexual and gender diversity" education focusing on "inter-minority empathy," which includes the process of "self-awareness," are necessary.departmental bulletin pape

In the basic philosophy of education, the perspective of career education has been emphasized along with love for one's hometown. However, the reality is that the family environment influences the students' advancement to higher education after high school in order to broaden the range of their career choices. In the presented school, a high percentage of students did not have an image of higher education due to their family environment, and it was an issue to improve their motivation to learn with an eye toward higher education and employment from the viewpoint of career security. This study aimed to help the students visualize “the image of a university student they longed for” through exchange experiences with university students, and to help them materialize their dreams and hopes for the future with an image of higher education, as well as to improve their motivation for learning. The program started smoothly in the 1990s, but in the 2021 academic year, due to the spread of infectious diseases, it became impossible to directly interact with the university students. The children enjoyed a new form of interaction with the university students through online exchange. After more than two years of practical research, we have confirmed an increase in the number of children with dreams and hopes for the future.departmental bulletin pape

In order to examine the significance of teacher education for the transmission of instruction, we conducted a survey on T.T. and small-group instruction for 6 leaders and 19 members who participated in the 2023 “Tokyo Teachers' Dojo” training for leaders and members of math and arithmetic groups. The survey responses were summarized on the status of implementation of each form of instruction and the advantages and disadvantages of each form of instruction in each school type. From a discussion of the characteristics of each form of instruction, it was suggested that “flexible use of T.T., in particular, can realize the simultaneous development of classes and cooperative training that maximizes effectiveness with minimum effort, not only from the viewpoint of increasing the educational effect on students, but also from the viewpoint of teacher education, and that this will lead to more effective teaching methods and teacher education in the future. The paper makes recommendations for effective teaching methods and teacher education in the future.departmental bulletin pape

Impact of Flipped Classroom Model on Students’ Academic Achievement in Fiji: A Study of Teaching “Language of Newspaper Reporting”

    Get PDF
In response to the demands of today's technology-driven world, this study examines the effects of the flipped classroom model on the academic achievement of 12th-grade ESL students in an urban Fijian school. Employing the journalistic “Language of Newspaper Reporting,” this research involved 80 ESL students divided into control (35 students) and experimental (45 students) groups. Post-intervention testing measured academic outcomes, with results showing higher performance in the flipped classroom group than in the traditional model. Findings suggest that the flipped classroom model moderately enhances ESL students' comprehension and academic success, highlighting its potential to support Fiji's ESL educational landscape.departmental bulletin pape
