departmental bulletin pape
Factors Limiting High Achievement Level in Grade 6 Science Subjects in Fiji : External Examination Items and Results from 2017, 2018 and 2019
Over the years, the Fiji Education portfolio has undergone many reforms in terms of curriculum and assessment. The Ministry of Education has localized the curriculum, and with the pressure of having external exams, teachers are still comfortable with the rote memorization style of teaching. According to Doochin. D, 2019 English is regarded as a universal language, there are still some significant concerns regarding the Fijian studentsʼ lack of comprehension skills. It is evident from the current information acquired from the National Examiners report (2015-2019) concerning the decline in the science achievement level. Students seem to excel and achieve above the benchmark in the knowledge, understanding, and cognitive application domain. However, students struggle to grasp abstract scientific terminologies, which have disallowed them to think critically or solve complex problems on some of the toughest exams, such as the Fiji Year 6 Intermediate Examination. There are a lot of factors surrounding low achievement levels. The purpose of this article is to analyze and highlight some of the significant factors limiting achievement levels in science subjects. The suggested pedagogy, namely Inquiry-Based Learning, can be strengthened to improve teaching competencies and address the need to prioritize the constructive philosophy of teaching and learning. A pre-requisite of high order thinking skills is to first obtain and familiarize with low order thinking skills; these need to be enhanced in children as per the prescribed curriculum for the elementary level in Fiji.departmental bulletin pape
A Comparative Study on International Understanding Education in China and Japan : Through the Study of the History, Form, and Curriculum of International Understanding Education in Primary Schools
Possibility and Challenges of Introducing Phase-Free Education in Schools : Focusing on the Efforts of the Naruto City Board of Education
This paper presents “phase-free”, the new concept of disaster prevention, with a practical case study in a school in Naruto City, and summarizes the significance, purpose, and advantages of introducing phase-free into schools based on the contents of the booklet “Phase-free in Schools: Connecting the Always and the What If” by the Naruto City Board of Education. Phase-free was shown to improve a schoolʼs disaster response ability and made it easy for students to independently take the initiative in learning content, leading to improved academic ability and quality of schooling (QOS). In addition, the introduction of phase-free in schools may develop a culture of living to cope with unexpected natural disasters and improve the disaster response capacity of the whole society. However, from the viewpoint of school safety, the phase-free system remains an issue in the work of teachers.departmental bulletin pape
A study of the theory of taiwa−kan as a basic foundational theory of language education
The purpose of the present study was to carry out an analysis and investigation to establish the theory of taiwa-kan as a basic foundational theory of language education. The theory of taiwa-kan was explored by Kiichiro Yamaguchi (1872-1952) from 1942 until his death in 1952. It is connected at a fundamental level with the kotoba theory of Nishio Minoru, which furnishes the basic theories of Yamaguchi's direct method-based Japanese language education (second language education) and native language education, and with the “image theory” of Matsuzo Kaito, which investigates the mechanisms through which new knowledge and understandings take shape on the basis of language education. The present study carried out the investigation based on the idea that language theory in sociology goes no further than the general reception of social language theory and does not address the dynamics of language (the structures and principles of taiwa-kan , which has “four linguistic aspects”), including language education. To begin with, Chapter I clarifies the weakness of language theory as a foundational sociological theory and asserts that taiwa-kan theory has the potential to make contributions. In connection with the “reforms toward the education of the future,” which are widely advocated in the present-day education world, Chapter II points out that taiwa-kan theory has the potential to contribute to pioneering this “education of the future” without losing sight of the legacy of current educational practices. Chapter III forecasts that phenomenology, a discipline that is neglected to some extent in twenty-first-century contemporary thought, could serve to explain taiwa-kan and furnish a foundational theory for education/language education. This work consists of a mere sketch of these subjects, and it intends to construct a foundational theory for language education and to take the first steps in constructing a theory for making theoretical proposals regarding the present state of systems theory and language theory in sociological and philosophical thought from a language education perspective.departmental bulletin pape
The Main Issues of Natural Science Education in Madagascar
In Madagascar, a low participation rate in science majors as well as insufficient performance in science subjects in upper secondary education has been recorded over the last three years. This situation has aroused my interest to investigate the main barrier of science education, in particular of natural sciences subject. The objective is to fi nd the main demotivating factors through data investigation and student survey. Open-ended questions as well as Likert scale questions were chosen. In this regard, it was found that poor performance in science subjects is the main reason why female and male students are not motivated. Regarding the teaching, the lack of concreteness is perceived in the natural sciences class but on the other hand the teacher was effective in his explanations according to the students. They are interested in the natural sciences but this field does not correspond to their professional project. There is a gap between the lesson conducted in class and the relevance of that one in society. Finally, the lack of concreteness of the teaching is possibly at the root of this demotivation. Overall, the study also highlights the factors performance and the career plan as important in influencing students' choice in this place.departmental bulletin pape
