A study on parents’ awareness of the effects of digital media use on young children
This study aimed to examine the awareness of parents of the effects of digital media use on their offspring through a questionnaire survey of 426 children’s guardians. The results indicated the following: (1) There was no age difference in young children using tablets and smartphones. However, there was an age difference in the usage of portable/stationary game consoles. It was revealed that 5-year-olds were more likely to use game consoles while children under the age of 3 years were less likely to use them. (2) Regarding the content of digital media, the use of game applications and viewing of live game videos were high among 5-year-olds, and the viewing of music-related videos was high among children aged 2 and younger. (3) Those parents who indicated a high percentage of usage of tablets and smartphones by their children had a high ratio of positive responses, such as “acquisition of knowledge.” In contrast, they had a low percentage of negative responses, namely “short sleep time.” However, they had a high proportion of “disturbed rhythm of life.” The text-mining analysis showed that children imitated Internet videos, sang songs, danced, and used these videos for learning. The findings suggest that no age difference in the children in the use of tablets and smartphones indicates that children of all ages use these gadgets. Parents’ awareness of the negative effects of digital media is closely related to the frequency of use of digital media by their children. The free-text responses included examples of how digital media was used as a tool for parents and their offspring to enjoy together.departmental bulletin pape

An Exploratory Study of the Role Awareness of Teacher Educators in Universities : Focusing on the roles of “teacher of teachers”and “researcher”
In this study, we examined how differences in the strength of the role awareness of “teacher of teachers” and “researcher” among teacher educators in university lead to differences in their perceptions of the competencies (knowledge, abilities, and experience) required of teacher educators, their views of research and teaching, and their views of teacher's professional development. The results indicated that the role awareness of the “teacher of teachers” leads to the perception in that practice is the main focus, while the role awareness of the “researcher” reveals a consistent orientation toward research, which contrasts with the role awareness of the “teacher of teachers”. However, regardless of the differences in the role awareness, there were some common perceptions. Also, it was suggested a relationship of convergent interaction between the two types of role awareness.departmental bulletin pape
Review of Research on Teacher Moonlighting : Implication for International Cooperation in Education
Research on the Development of Global Competence through International Baccalaureate Program in Public Elementary School : A Case Study of Cross-Curricular Topic ‘Which Place and Era We Are in?’
The aim of this research was to identify the factors to contribute to the acquisition of global competence by the implementation of IB program in Grade 6. First, the commonalities between the global competence defined by the OECD and the objectives of the IB curriculum were extracted and discussed. Second, a lesson plan related to the extracted commonalities were developed and implemented. Third, the development of children's global competence was analysed. As a result, the following two points were found out. First, there are similarities between OECD global competence and the objectives of the IB program. Therefore, the implementation of IB program can foster the OECD global competence. Second, it is important to make a matter of personal concern in acquiring global competence. Furthermore, it was implied that the authentic information and examples facilitated it.departmental bulletin pape
Investigating the Subject Matter Knowledge and Pedagogical Content Knowledge for Teaching the Volume of Rectangular Prisms of 6th-Grade Teachers in El Salvador
This paper aims to determine teachers' subject matter knowledge (SMK) and pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) in the content of the volume of rectangular prisms. An assessment for identifying them was applied to 70 teachers from the region of Santa Ana, the participants taught mathematics in 6th-grade in which the content of volume is learned. While teachers' performance on items belonging to SMK was relatively good with around 56.3% of correct answers, it was low on those related to PCK in which the percentage of correct answers gained only 31.0%. This suggests that high SMK does not necessarily indicate high PCK.departmental bulletin pape
