A Science Class to Observe Sunlight Spectrum and Light Absorption of Plants Using a DVD Spectrometer at the Secondary School Attached to National University of Laos

    Get PDF
A science class for observation of the spectrum of sunlight and the absorption spectrum of green leaves was conducted for lower secondary students in Laos by making and using a hand-on DVD spectrometer. Although this lesson was effective in deepening students' understanding of the principle and the making method of the DVD spectrometer and in encouraging students to learn actively, it was insufficient in helping all students understand the relationship between the absorption of light and the appearance of colors. In the future, it is necessary to flexibly adjust the content and process of learning activities according to students’ awareness and curiosity.departmental bulletin pape

Learning Activities at Primary and Secondary Schools in Laos to Learn Scientifically about Cleaning Effects of Soap and Importance of Hand Washing Through Soap Making

    Get PDF
Diarrheal diseases are one of the most common diseases among children in Laos, and the main reason is that hygiene practices such as hand washing have not been widespread yet. Using soap as a teaching material, we conducted primary and secondary science classes in Laos to help students enhance their interest in hand washing and wash their hands habitually. In this class, we taught students how to wash their hands effectively by making solid soap with liquid soap and using a chemical to visualize dirt on hands. This learning activity was found to be effective for both primary and secondary students in increasing their interest and motivation in hand washing. Although soap is a familiar daily material, its forming process includes high school learning contents in chemistry, such as salting-out and saponification. This activity is expected to be useful not only for hygiene instruction but also for advanced science learning according to learners’ grades.departmental bulletin pape

A study on the relationship between community school activities and students’ academic achievement: Through qualitative and quantitative research in junior high schools

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to clarify the relationship between community school activities and students’ academic achievement in junior high schools. A questionnaire survey was conducted targeting community schools (329 schools) in junior high schools nationwide as of April 2012, with the aim of identifying “schools where community school activities have an impact on students’ academic achievement”. We selected schools A and B from responded 75 schools. These two schools had particularly high rates of assistance for attending school and high student academic ability. Principals stated that they were taking an active role in running the community school in these two schools. Visits to these two schools were conducted between May 2016 and November 2017 (6 visits to School A, 9 visits to School B). Analysis of the data obtained from these surveys revealed the following two points. 1) In junior high schools, “as a community school, students carry out activities to become participants in local traditional events and festivals” affects the academic ability of students on average at the school. 2) In a junior high school community school where students are improving their academic performance despite being from a difficult economic background, activities in the community school committees functioned as a supplementary means to achieve the school’s goal of “students learning independently.” However, the quantitative survey conducted in this study had a low response rate and a small sample size, so the data may be biased. The qualitative research only described and explained the data obtained from two schools. Therefore, the findings of this study present a set of hypotheses. Consequently, the findings from the data analyzed in this study cannot be immediately generalized.departmental bulletin pape

This paper summarizes the development process of the “Tokushima Prefecture 'Awareness' Checklist for Supporting Children and Families,” which was created in collaboration with Tokushima Prefecture. The checklist was designed for use by individuals operating children's spaces, regardless of whether they are professionals or non-professionals, and to assess the risk of child?family issues so as to enable sharing insights across various fields such as child welfare, disability welfare, education, and care welfare. The development process involved several steps. First, existing assessment sheets were reviewed. Second, effective screening items were extracted from prior studies and clinical experience. Third, a checklist was created based on the extracted items. Fourth, a provisional checklist was tested through validation surveys conducted with professionals and non-professionals working in children’s spaces. Fifth, based on the results of the fourth step, the items were refined to complete the checklist. The finalized checklist is available for download from the Tokushima Prefecture website and is being utilized in children's spaces and other relevant settings.departmental bulletin pape

Vertical and Horizontal Collaboration in Special Needs Education at High schools: Through Career Development Support by Special Support Services in Resource

The purpose of this study was to examine the state of vertical and horizontal collaboration in special needs education at high schools through the practice of career development support at resource room. In the special support services in resource, employment support was provided to students with the autism spectrum disorder in small steps while understanding their interests and concerns and the difficulties caused by their disabilities. As a result, horizontal collaboration that connects multiple institutions at the same time was suggested to be effective in order to smoothly transition to career paths and social life after graduation. In addition, the efforts of the collaboration conference suggested the effectiveness of vertical collaboration that connects matters that should be considered according to life stages over a time axis.departmental bulletin pape
