    The Morality of Suicide: A Utilitarian Perspective on Death

    In 2020, suicide was the twelfth leading cause of death in the US across all age groups, ranking as the second leading cause of death for 10-14 and 25-34 year olds ( Facts About Suicide ). An estimated 1.7 million people attempted suicide, and millions more seriously considered it ( Facts About Suicide ). Despite these numbers, suicide has had a long and complicated history in the legal system. While it is currently legal in the US in its most direct (i.e. unassisted) form, many countries still have laws banning its attempt (Chang, 153). Assisted suicide, or suicide in which someone else helps a person to take their own life, is still illegal in most US states. Of course, the legality of an action does not determine its morality. However, this points to a broader picture of Western society\u27s views towards suicide. While suicide is now better understood most frequently as a symptom of mental illness, many people still believe it to be morally wrong, and see it has having some bearing on the subsequent morality of a person (Quinnett, 4). In this paper, I will analyze suicide using a utilitarian framework– an ethical theory which proposes that the right action is the one which maximizes overall pleasure. With this in mind, I will begin with the concept that suicide is not inherently morally wrong. I will argue that although utilitarianism means suicide may not be inherently wrong, in most situations attempting to commit suicide will not lead to the best consequences. Therefore, suicide will not be the best moral choice for an individual to make

    Hawkmoth and bee pollinators impact pollen dispersal at the landscape but not local scales in two species of Oenothera

    Premise: Animal pollinators play an important role in pollen dispersal. Here, we assessed differences in pollen and seed dispersal and the role of pollinator functional groups with different foraging behaviors in generating patterns of genetic diversity over similar geographic ranges for two closely related taxa. We focused on two members of Oenothera section Calylophus (Onagraceae) that co-occur on gypsum outcrops throughout the northern Chihuahuan Desert but differ in floral phenotype and primary pollinator: Oenothera gayleana (bee) and O. hartwegii subsp. filifolia (hawkmoth). Methods: We measured breeding system and floral traits and studied gene flow and population differentiation at the local (\u3c13 km; four populations) and landscape (60-440 km; five populations) scales using 10-11 nuclear (pollen dispersal) and three plastid (seed dispersal) microsatellite markers. Results: Both taxa were self-incompatible and floral traits were consistent with expectations for different pollinators. Seed and pollen dispersal patterns were distinctly different for both species. We found no evidence of genetic structure at the local scale but did at the landscape scale; O. gayleana showed greater differentiation and significant isolation by distance than in O. hartwegii subsp. filifolia. The plastid data were consistent with gravity dispersal of seeds and suggest that pollen dispersal is the principal driver of genetic structure in both species. Conclusions: We demonstrated that pollinator functional groups can impact genetic differentiation in different and predictable ways.     Chemo-, Stereo- and Regioselective Fluoroallylation/Annulation of Hydrazones with gem-Difluorocyclopropanes via Tunable Palladium/NHC Catalysis

    Defluorinative manipulation of polyfluorinated molecules has shown great promise due to its granting of synthetic versatility to inert C-F bonds. The development of chemo-, stereo- and regioselective strategies to realize highly efficient formation of either the linear/branched or E/Z products from gem-difluorocyclopropanes (gem-F(2)CPs) is a challenging task. Herein, we have realized palladium/NHC-catalyzed fluoroallylation/annulation of hydrazones with gem-F(2)CPs that incorporate the hydrazone N-2 moiety into the products. The thermodynamically unstable fluorinated E-allylation products with aryl ketone hydrazones were obtained for the first time, while the di-alkyl ketone hydrazones yielded the monofluorinated products with branched selectivity under similar reaction conditions. With aldehyde hydrazones, two kinds of pyrazoles were obtained via a defluorinative allylation/annulation cascade, in which different carbon atoms of gem-F(2)CPs could be incorporated into the pyrazole rings regiospecifically. DFT calculations revealed that the divergent selectivity was kinetically controlled and the final C-C bond formation proceeded through a 7-membered TS
