    Navigating puberty, identity, and race among transnationally, transracially adopted Korean American adolescents

    This exploratory study examined the relation between pubertal timing and dimensions of ethnic-racial identity among adopted Korean Americans raised transracially in White families. The study also examined whether internalized racism moderated the association between pubertal timing and ethnic-racial identity. Adopted Korean American adolescents (N = 202; 108 females; ages 13-19 years) completed measures of pubertal development, ethnic-racial identity, and internalized racism in 2007. There was no significant main effect of pubertal timing for either male or female adolescents. Internalized racism moderated the relation between pubertal timing and ethnic-racial identity clarity (B = -.16, p = .015) among male adolescents. Specifically, earlier pubertal timing was significantly associated with lower ethnic-racial identity clarity for male adolescents with higher levels of internalized racism

    The effects of behavioral synchrony on Theory-of-Mind among collaborative music-makers

    Extant research has indicated that collaborative music-making activities can enhance the social-cognitive ability known as Theory-of-Mind. Behavioral synchrony, the act of being physically and temporally coordinated with others, also engenders effects on Theory-of-Mind. The present study aimed to examine whether behavioral synchrony affects Theory-of-Mind differently between people who do and do not engage in collaborative music-making activities. Participants were classified as music-makers or music-non makers, assigned a partner, and randomly assigned to synchronous or control conditions. Participants completed either a behavioral synchrony task or a control task (maze) before taking a Theory-of-Mind test. Results did not show effects of the synchrony task or music-maker status on overall Theory-of-Mind, but demonstrated that synchrony and music-making did have distinct effects on the subdomains of Theory-of-Mind. The findings suggest that the relationships between behavioral synchrony, collaborative music-making, and Theory-of-Mind are complex

    Biochar has positive but distinct impacts on root, shoot, and fruit production in beans, tomatoes, and willows

    Biochar, a stable type of charcoal produced through anaerobic combustion of biomass, provides a mechanism of concurrently sequestering carbon and increasing soil fertility and food production. Positive relationships have been documented between biochar concentration in soil and plant growth and fertility. However, the effects of biochar are variable across different biochar source materials, soils, environments, plants, and plant tissues. This makes it challenging to compare and generalize findings across previous research. Our study investigated the effects of a single source of biochar (waste wood from a local hazelnut orchard), in a constructed organic soil inoculated with mycorrhizae, on the different plant tissues (roots, shoots, and fruits) of three functionally dis-tinct species: cherry tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicon var.), green beans (Phaseolus vulgaris var.), and willow saplings (Salix sp.). This experiment took place over the summer of 2021 and extended through the summer of 2022 for willows. Five levels of biochar amendment were assessed: a 0% control, 3%, 9%, and 26% by dry weight. A low inoculant treatment was also included at the 9% level. Plants were grown in fabric pots, rotated weekly, fertilized, and irrigated. We found a highly significant positive relationship between the amount of biochar added to the soil and total plant biomass in all species, with no significant difference in total biomass response among species. Fruit production increased with increased biochar addition in both beans and tomatoes. Tomatoes exhibited significant differences in response among plant tissues; in tomatoes fruit production and shoot biomass increased significantly with biochar, but root tissue did not. Bean germination suc-cess increased significantly with biochar concentration. Date of first flowering was earlier with increasing soil biochar in beans but not in tomatoes. Control over both sources of biochar and soil composition in this experiment enables us to conclude that biochar addition can have different impacts on different plants and, in some cases, species-specific impacts on different plant tissues and other measures of fertility. Our results are contrary to prior research that found inhibiting effects of biochar at levels comparable to our 26% treatment. Small differences in soil chemistry among treatments lead us to conclude that microbial interaction with biochar is an important factor explaining the positive impacts of soil biochar on plant fertility. It is important to note that our study was conducted in a highly organic soil with hazelnut wood biochar; further research that controls for soil type and biochar source is necessary to determine the extent to which findings of this study apply to other biochar sources in other soil types and for other species of plants

    A phylogeny of the evening primrose family (Onagraceae) using a target enrichment approach with 303 nuclear loci

    Background: The evening primrose family (Onagraceae) includes 664 species (803 taxa) with a center of diversity in the Americas, especially western North America. Ongoing research in Onagraceae includes exploring striking variation in floral morphology, scent composition, and breeding system, as well as the role of these traits in driving diversity among plants and their interacting pollinators and herbivores. However, these efforts are limited by the lack of a comprehensive, well-resolved phylogeny. Previous phylogenetic studies based on a few loci strongly support the monophyly of the family and the sister relationship of the two largest tribes but fail to resolve several key relationships. Results: We used a target enrichment approach to reconstruct the phylogeny of Onagraceae using 303 highly conserved, low-copy nuclear loci. We present a phylogeny for Onagraceae with 169 individuals representing 152 taxa sampled across the family, including extensive sampling within the largest tribe, Onagreae. Deep splits within the family are strongly supported, whereas relationships among closely related genera and species are characterized by extensive conflict among individual gene trees. Conclusions: This phylogenetic resource will augment current research projects focused throughout the family in genomics, ecology, coevolutionary dynamics, biogeography, and the evolution of characters driving diversification in the family

    Economics of Adoption

    This chapter provides an overview of the economic theory of child adoption and empirical research on adoption in the United States. Using a model of supply and demand, the chapter begins with a description of a market framework for adoption services, which allows for understanding the role of economic incentives, policy, and “consumer” preferences in adoption decisions. The chapter then discusses the theory and empirical evidence on whether and how supply-side and demand-side factors influence adoptions, separately considering the markets for private domestic adoptions, international adoptions, and public foster care adoptions. Differences in supply and demand across the different markets, and shifts in supply and demand over time, can explain trends in the numbers of adoptions, differences in the cost of adoption, and differences in the characteristics of adoptive parents and adopted children across adoption markets
