Activist Memoirs Database
The activist memoirs database serves as a growing collection of stories describing the incredible lives of activists. It serves as a resource for researchers, students, and anyone else interested in learning about the various ways activist leaders have manifested change.
The database provides the title, author, a link to buy each book online, and a short summary of each book. It categorizes the memoirs based on the primary activism-related issue (e.g. education, environmentalism, BIPOC rights, etc.) in order to facilitate user experience in finding memoirs within a specific topic of interest. There are currently 165 books which have primarily been sourced from Goodreads, Amazon Best Sellers, and Parnassus Books lists of activist memoirs
The Impact of Weather Shocks on Employment Outcomes: Evidence from South Africa
Climate change is increasing the frequency of extreme weather events, such as drought and heat waves. In this paper, we assess the impact of drought and high temperatures on the employment outcomes of working-age individuals in South Africa between 2008 and 2017. We merge high-resolution weather data with detailed individual-level survey data on labor market outcomes, and estimate causal impacts using a fixed effects framework. We find that increases in the occurrence of drought reduce overall employment. These effects are concentrated in the tertiary sector, amongst informal workers, and in provinces with a higher reliance on tourism. Taken together, our results suggest that the impacts of climate change will be felt unequally by South Africa’s workers
Correlating Changes in Spot Filling Factors With Stellar Rotation: The Case of Lkca 4
We present a multi-epoch spectroscopic study of LkCa 4, a heavily spotted non-accreting T Tauri star. Using SpeX at NASA’s Infrared Telescope Facility (IRTF), 12 spectra were collected over five consecutive nights, spanning ≈1.5 stellar rotations. Using the IRTF SpeX Spectral Library, we constructed empirical composite models of spotted stars by combining a warmer (photosphere) standard star spectrum with a cooler (spot) standard weighted by the spot filling factor, f spot. The best-fit models spanned two photospheric component temperatures, T phot = 4100 K (K7V) and 4400 K (K5V), and one spot component temperature, T spot = 3060 K (M5V) with an A V of 0.3. We find values of f spot to vary between 0.77 and 0.94 with an average uncertainty of ∼0.04. The variability of f spot is periodic and correlates with its 3.374 day rotational period. Using a mean value for f meanspot to represent the total spot coverage, we calculated spot corrected values for T eff and L ⋆. Placing these values alongside evolutionary models developed for heavily spotted young stars, we infer mass and age ranges of 0.45-0.6 M ⊙ and 0.50-1.25 Myr, respectively. These inferred values represent a twofold increase in the mass and a twofold decrease in the age as compared to standard evolutionary models. Such a result highlights the need for constraining the contributions of cool and warm regions of young stellar atmospheres when estimating T eff and L ⋆ to infer masses and ages as well as the necessity for models to account for the effects of these regions on the early evolution of low-mass stars

According to the NRDC, nearly 40% of food in the US is wasted, primarily due to distribution losses and premature disposal. In Massachusetts alone, more than a million tons of food waste were sent to landfills in 2016, representing a quarter of the state’s waste stream. Smith College loses thousands of dollars each year on disposal of unserved food. Due to students not consistently swiping their OneCards for meals, in addition to Smith’s lack of centralized dining with up to 12 dining halls open each day, Smith dining hall chefs cannot account for fluctuations in student traffic to estimate food quantity preparation for the day, which causes overproduction and significant food waste. Meanwhile, more than 650,000 Massachusetts residents are food insecure, with 13,000 located in Hampshire County alone.
Smith spends thousands on compost tipping costs for 1 disposal of hundreds of pounds of food surplus generated by these dining halls daily. However, according to the NRDC and EPA Food Recovery Hierarchy, donation has a greater environmental and social impact than composting. Under the Good Samaritan Food Donation Act of 1966, donors are protected from liability when donating food in good faith for distribution to needy individuals; yet, a stark disparity remains between those with food surplus and the food insecure
