    Associations Between Micromorphological Traits and Macromorphology of Carnivorous Pitcher Plant Traps and Their Potential Relationship to Prey Capture

    Unlike other more famous, motile carnivorous plants, pitcher plants have been considered a classic example of passive, non-motile pitfall traps with various suggested prey capture mechanisms. Pitcher plants with pitfall traps for prey capture have evolved independently in three distinct angiosperm lineages: Sarraceniaceae, Nepentheaceae, and Cephalotaceae. Micromorphological studies have shown that some of these species exhibit trap surface traits that might enhance prey capture and retention. In the Sarraceniaceae, several of studies have detected that some species produce microscopic, downward-pointing hairs on the interior walls of their traps which might create anisotropic, anti-adhesive surfaces to facilitate prey capture. In this descriptive study, a scanning electron microscopy (SEM) survey of the trap leaf interior surfaces was conducted focusing on representative species of all 3 Sarraceniaceae genera (Darlingtonia, Heliamphora, and Sarracenia) to explore the distribution and nature of this trichome trait relative to evolutionary relationships and trap forms, as well as explore the way in which vertical, shingled trichome surfaces might interact with tarsi of flying insect prey. The results suggest that the presence of microscopic trichomes might date back to the common ancestor of the Sarraceniaceae clade, approximately 35 MYA, with subsequent loss in a subset of species in both the Sarracenia and Heliamphora genera, potentially in conjunction with changes in pitcher form and presentation associated with shifts from tall vertical traps attracting flying insects to low, semi-horizontal pitchers capturing primarily crawling invertebrates

    Design of Small Aircraft for Atmospheric Measurements

    Uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) have recently become a popular method of collecting data for various research purposes, especially in the field of atmospheric science and meteorology. UAVs exhibit many advantages over other methods of collecting meteorological data, such as lower cost than crewed aircraft and greater maneuverability than weather balloons. The goal of this project was to design, construct, test, and analyze the performance of a small UAV capable of measuring meteorological parameters in the atmospheric boundary layer. Design constraints included the FAA regulations regarding the size and maximum flight altitude of small unregistered aircraft, available materials, a budget of less than $200, and the time limitations of an undergraduate thesis. The aircraft that was designed and constructed was successful in flight tests and collected credible meteorological profiles

    Before American History examines the project of settler nationalism from the 1780s to the 1840s in two of North America’s republics—the US and Mexico—through an analysis of historical knowledge production. As the US and Mexico transformed from European colonies into independent republics—and before war scarred them both—antiquarians and historians compiled and interpreted archives meant to document America’s Indigenous pasts. Before American History approaches two iconic imaginings of the past—the carved Sun Stone and the mounded earthwork—as archives of nationalist power and Indigenous dispossession as well as objects that are, at their material base, Indigenously-produced but settler-controlled and settler-interpreted. In making the connection between earthworks built by an allegedly vanished people merely peripheral to US citizens and the literal touchstone of Mexicans’ history, Before American History details how Mexican and US nationalists created national histories out of Indigenous pasts and thereby wrote Indigenous pasts out of their national histories and out of national lands. It uncovers how the manipulation of Indigenous pasts and (mis)interpretations of “American Antiquities”—Indigenous documents, objects and monuments—served the purposes of a trans-imperial/transnational network of creole ruling elites, first in New Spain and British America, and later in Mexico and the United States, as they struggled to construct new political, geographic, and historical orders.https://scholarworks.smith.edu/ams_books/1002/thumbnail.jp

    Chinese Classics: The Commentarial Tradition

    Chapter Abstract: Reading texts from the Chinese and Japanese canons, Knight and Smith engage the subtle interplay of classic texts and commentaries, ancient and modern. They find that no classic text is a stand-alone: each inner text has traditionally been read as a dialogue between originating author(s) and authoritative later readers. When we approach these texts, then, we find ourselves part of an explicit, venerable conversation. Knight and Smith focus on five examples: the Sunzi (Sun Tzu) Art of War, the Japanese Zen Master Ikkyū, the great Tang dynasty poet Li Bo (Li Po), the ancient divination text the Yijing (I Ching) or Classic of Change, and the perplexing philosopher Laozi (Lao Tzu), originator of Daoism (Taoism). Reading these texts is like marrying into a very large family, one whose members, allusions, rewritings, irregular knowing and jokes we may appreciate or tolerate to different degrees. No way to control this process! Book Abstract: This Is a Classic illuminates the overlooked networks that contribute to the making of literary classics through the voices of multiple translators, without whom writers would have a difficult time reaching a global audience. It presents the work of some of today\u27s most accomplished literary translators who translate classics into English or who work closely with translation in the US context and magnifies translators\u27 knowledge, skills, creativity, and relationships with the literary texts they translate, the authors whose works they translate, and the translations they make. The volume presents translators\u27 expertise and insight on how classics get defined according to language pairs and contexts.
