Machine Plays in France: Between Italian Opera and French Tragedy in Music
Book Abstract:
Since the nineteenth century, some of the most influential historians have portrayed opera and tragedy as wholly distinct cultural phenomena. These historians have denied a meaningful connection between the tragedy of the ancients and the efforts of early modern composers to arrive at styles that were intensely dramatic.
Drawing on a series of case studies, Opera, Tragedy, and Neighbouring Forms from Corneille to Calzabigi traces the productive, if at times rivalrous, relationship between opera and tragedy from the institution of French regular tragedy under Richelieu in the 1630s to the reform of opera championed by Calzabigi and Gluck in the late eighteenth century. Blair Hoxby and his fellow contributors shed light on “neighbouring forms” of theatre, including pastoral drama, tragédie en machines, tragédie en musique, and Goldoni’s dramma giocoso. Their analysis includes famous masterpieces by Corneille, Voltaire, Metastasio, Goldoni, Calzabigi, Handel, and Gluck, as well as lesser-known artists such as Luisa Bergalli, the first female librettist to write for the public theatre in Italy. Storm-Generated Molluscan Thanatocoenosis along a Carbonate Paleoshoreline: Southern Eleuthera Island, The Bahamas
Concentrations of large mollusc shells in coastal deposits provide important information about the local malacofauna and potential transport agents, including extreme events [1-4]. Such accumulations are common in the rock record [5,6], with Quaternary examples serving as good time-averaged examples by combining aspects of both the modern biocoenoses and the fossil record. Death assemblages of local organisms (thanatocoenosis) and their preserved record (taphocoenosis) in carbonate settings, where granulometric spectrum may be very limited (e.g., ooilitic sand), can serve as important paleo-environmental indicators, especially when considered in combination with primary sedimentary structures (in outcrops or geophysical images) and in situ biogenic structures (trace fossils)[7]. Along prograded beach/dune ridge complexes (strandplains) [8], extensive accumulations of large nearshore mollusc shells are likely related to extreme events, such as intense storms [1]. This study reports on an anomalous accumulation of mostly juvenile conch shells (Aliger sp.) along one of the oldest (landwardmost) paleoshorelines of the Plum Creek Beach in Freetown, southern Eleuthera Island, The Bahamas (Fig. 1). Reflecting on CCX 320 Work: Supporting Emerging Adolescence
I have been looking forward to this class for several semesters, both as a way to dedicate time to a project I care a lot about and as a culmination of my work in the concentration. At a reflection session our sophomore year, Helen and I realized how much our areas of interest intersected, and started discussing what a project combining our fields could look like. We were aware there was likely significant overlap in material and approaches from education and health fields, and that the intersection of these would be useful in a public health setting. While we first conceptualized this project in 2021, our research process showed that it may be even more relevant today. I think our combined academic backgrounds and work informed a lot of our research and approach, but that working together on the project made it something deeper than we could have individually produced. I am really proud of the work we did, and found the overall process to be productive and a great summary of my work and further learning experience

A powerful eyewitness account of the Shavl ghetto in Nazi-occupied Lithuania
So We Died: A Memoir of Life and Death in the Ghetto of Šiauliai, Lithuania (Azoy zaynen mir geshtorbn) is a powerful eyewitness account of the Shavl ghetto during the Nazi occupation of Lithuania. Written in Yiddish by Levi Shalit and available now for the first time in English, the work fills a stark void in historical records.
Shalit divided his work into four sections. In the first, he describes the German invasion of Šiauliai, the murder of thousands of Jews in the city and surrounding countryside, and the forced relocation of the surviving Jews into the Shavl ghetto. In the second, he describes daily life in the ghetto in engrossing detail. In the third, titled “The Masada Book,” Shalit describes ghetto residents’ attempt to organize a resistance group of which he himself was a member. In the fourth, he narrates the transformation of the ghetto into a concentration camp and the seizure and deportation of the community’s children.
Few accounts of the Shavl ghetto survived the war. Shalit’s work offers English-language readers a rare insight into a vital chapter of history. The translators artfully reveal Shalit’s literary prowess and the ways he illuminated the Shavl ghetto’s daily struggles, false hopes, and atrocities.
More than an account of a previously overlooked episode in Holocaust history, So We Died is a testament to the enduring power of the human spirit in the face of unspeakable tragedy. Finding an Edge: Figure Skating as a Tool for Nationalism, Prestige, and Soft Power
This thesis analyzes how states use the sport of figure skating in the international political system to acquire soft power, elevate their status and prestige, and foment nationalistic sentiment. By examining how China, Russia/the USSR, and other countries have developed the sport of figure skating, I find that figure skating has contributed to the projection of power and process of nation branding that states use to integrate themselves into the global community. The subjectivity of figure skating allows states to effectively harness it for political gain, and its artistic component allows it to integrate more deeply into a country’s culture than sports which focus solely on technical skill. However, the organizations that govern figure skating and the Olympic Movement can prevent states from using figure skating to their political advantage by exercising their power over the international sports system, creating political tension at the international level as they check the authority of states
Modifying Hydrogel Platforms for Translational Medicine: Conjugation of Azlactone Hydrogels with Adhesive Peptides Using Amine Click Reactions
Despite their prevalence, peripheral and central nerve tissue damage are often addressed through interventions that can have unintended lasting impacts on motor or cognitive function. Thus, there exists a need to shift toward using therapeutics that prioritize localized tissue regeneration and minimize functional deficit. This thesis aimed to optimize the development of synthetic-based hydrogels fabricated from poly(2-vinyl-4,4’-dimethyl azlactone) (PVDMA) crosslinked using Jeffamine 600 for use as a tunable biomaterial. Reproducible bioinert hydrogel networks were synthesized using controlled radical polymerization. The swelling capabilities of these hydrogels were characterized to ascertain their physical and chemical tunable potential. An engineered collagen IA peptide was conjugated to these hydrogel networks using amine click chemistry to promote cell adhesion on the hydrogel surface. This would allow the hydrogel to act as a biomimetic scaffold in regions with nerve damage. Preliminary results demonstrated that PVDMA-Jeffamine 600 hydrogels can be a conducive environment for cell adhesion and proliferation. This thesis illustrates the potential for PVDMA-Jeffamine 600 hydrogels to act as a therapeutic in treating nerve tissue damage from a translational perspective
Characterizing the Glow of Calcium Flow: cacna1c in Bioelectric Patterning and Neurodevelopment
Alongside gene expression patterns and morphogen gradients, bioelectric patterning is potentially a key driver of development. Bioelectric patterns are characterized by fluctuations in the membrane potentials of non-excitable cells. When ionic regulators of bioelectric patterning are disrupted, developmental malformations may occur. Timothy Syndrome (TS) is a human autosomal dominant disease caused by a mutation in the cacna1c gene. cacna1c encodes the ɑ1c subunit of the L-type voltage-gated calcium (Ca2+) channel Cav1.2, which is the most commonly-occuring Ca2+ channel in the body. TS-causing mutations in the human cacna1c gene result in dysregulated Ca2+ flow through the Cav1.2 channel, such that Ca2+ moves freely across the cell membrane. TS is characterized by malformed craniofacial features, including the mandible, which is a structure derived from a population of multipotent progenitors called cranial neural crest cells (NCCs). The mechanism by which Ca2+ dysregulation in Cav1.2 channels is impacting NCC behavior during development is unknown. The role that NCCs play in establishing the craniofacial structures of the tractable model system of zebrafish is well established, therefore cacna1c expression during zebrafish embryogenesis has been characterized. Significant co-localization of cacna1c with markers for NCCs has been observed. Moreover, knockdown of cacna1c in wildtype, Marina GEVI transgenic, and Tg(sox10:nls-eos) transgenic embryos with two splice-blocking morpholinos has demonstrated broad physiological defects including but not limited to somite compaction and neural tube malformation. It may be postulated that cacna1c is an essential regulator of NCC behavior, which will shed further light on the broad importance of bioelectric patterning during embryonic development
