Therapists’ Self-Efficacy and Experiences Managing Clinical Risk in Teletherapy: A Mixed Methods Exploration
Before teletherapy usage grew dramatically during COVID-19, clinicians considered it less suitable for patients experiencing high-risk behaviours and related psychopathology (e.g., self-injurious thoughts and behaviours). This mixed methods study assesses clinicians’ concerns by quantitatively and qualitatively exploring their experiences, satisfaction, and self-efficacy using teletherapy for high-risk patients. Mental healthcare providers (N = 75) completed a survey assessing teletherapy usage, attitudes, and risk assessment/management self-efficacy. Nine providers then completed semi-structured interviews on these topics. Clinicians reported more confidence assessing and managing risk in-person as compared to teletherapy, and they reported being more likely to treat high-risk patients face-to-face than virtually. Still, attitudes toward teletherapy were generally positive, and clinicians who confidently managed risk in-person also tended to be confident virtually, often reporting that they could administer evidence-based therapeutic interventions regardless of therapy modality. Qualitative analyses revealed both general and person-specific factors that conferred increased or diminished confidence when managing risk
Reshaping Convex Polyhedra
The focus of this monograph is converting—reshaping—one 3D convex polyhedron to another via an operation the authors call “tailoring.” A convex polyhedron is a gem-like shape composed of flat facets, the focus of study since Plato and Euclid. The tailoring operation snips off a corner (a “vertex”) of a polyhedron and sutures closed the hole. This is akin to Johannes Kepler’s “vertex truncation,” but differs in that the hole left by a truncated vertex is filled with new surface, whereas tailoring zips the hole closed. A powerful “gluing” theorem of A.D. Alexandrov from 1950 guarantees that, after closing the hole, the result is a new convex polyhedron. Given two convex polyhedra P, and Q inside P, repeated tailoring allows P to be reshaped to Q. Rescaling any Q to fit inside P, the result is universal: any P can be reshaped to any Q. This is one of the main theorems in Part I, with unexpected theoretical consequences.
Part II carries out a systematic study of “vertex-merging,” a technique that can be viewed as a type of inverse operation to tailoring. Here the start is P which is gradually enlarged as much as possible, by inserting new surface along slits. In a sense, repeated vertex-merging reshapes P to be closer to planarity. One endpoint of such a process leads to P being cut up and “pasted” inside a cylinder. Then rolling the cylinder on a plane achieves an unfolding of P. The underlying subtext is a question posed by Geoffrey Shephard in 1975 and already implied by drawings by Albrecht Dürer in the 15th century: whether every convex polyhedron can be unfolded to a planar “net.” Toward this end, the authors initiate an exploration of convexity on convex polyhedra, a topic rarely studied in the literature but with considerable promise for future development.
This monograph uncovers new research directions and reveals connections among several, apparently distant, topics in geometry: Alexandrov’s Gluing Theorem, shortest paths and cut loci, Cauchy’s Arm Lemma, domes, quasigeodesics, convexity, and algorithms throughout. The interplay between these topics and the way the main ideas develop throughout the book could make the “journey” worthwhile for students and researchers in geometry, even if not directly interested in specific topics. Parts of the material will be of interest and accessible even to undergraduates. Although the proof difficulty varies from simple to quite intricate, with some proofs spanning several chapters, many examples and 125 figures help ease the exposition and illustrate the concepts
Authoritarian Learning
Authoritarian learning plays an increasingly important role in global processes of autocratization and democratic backsliding yet remains understudied and undertheorized. This chapter reviews conditions that elevate the role of authoritarian learning in the international system. It assesses the state of research with a focus on definitional debates concerning what authoritarian learning is and is not. In contrast to more restrictive definitions, the chapter presents an expansive definition of authoritarian learning as a process in which autocratic actors assess the appropriateness and effectiveness of ideas, rules, norms, and practices based on their observed utility. It argues that such processes are evident in both authoritarian and democratic regimes, and operate at the domestic, regional, and international levels. Turning to research horizons in the study of authoritarian learning, it advocates for comparative work that will shed light on specific mechanisms and causal pathways of authoritarian learning

This year, the journal’s reach continued to grow; we received more than double the number of submissions than we did during the 2022–2023 academic year, including submissions from more than fifteen colleges and universities. In a time when public support and funding for the humanities is falling, it has been an incredible experience to see such strong enthusiasm for the field of Medieval Studies

Stimulus on the Home Front: the State-Level Effects of WWII Spending
I use newly-digitized contract data on U.S. war production spending over 1940-1945 to analyze the macroeconomic effects of U.S. military spending in World War II. I find personal income multipliers of 0.34 over two years and 0.49 over three years. Personal income multipliers may substantially understate GDP multipliers, perhaps by as much as 50%. Employment estimates imply costs per job-year over the same time horizons of 232,268 in 2015 dollars, suggesting job creation was limited. I also find evidence of negative scale effects: larger positive spending shocks are associated with systematically smaller multiplier estimates
JEDI CORNER: Making Data Visualizations Accessible
People who are blind and visually impaired represent a substantial segment of the population, with 4% of 54,204 students in the 2022 American College Health Association survey reporting they are blind or have low vision. Those students frequently do not have access to data visualizations taught and used in postsecondary statistics and data science classes. Making data visualizations accessible to blind and visually impaired people would help improve equity in higher education and assist them with data-driven reasoning and communication
