Fishing for Answers: Explaining Environmental Justice Disparities in Chesapeake Bay Recreational Angling
A Note on Three-Fold Branched Covers of \u3ci\u3eS\u3c/i\u3e\u3csup\u3e4\u3c/sup\u3e
We show that any 4-manifold admitting a (g;k1,k2,0)-trisection is an irregular 3-fold cover of the 4-sphere whose branching set is a surface in S4, smoothly embedded except for one singular point which is the cone on a link. A 4-manifold admits such a trisection if and only if it has a handle decomposition with no 1-handles; it is conjectured that all simply-connected 4-manifolds have this property
Questions (and Answers) for Incorporating Nontraditional Grading in Your Statistics Courses
Nontraditional grading methods have recently become more common, and as with any large pedagogical shift, there are a number of questions to consider when applying a new grading scheme to a course. This article summarizes four types of nontraditional grading and shares experiences from the authors who have applied them to a variety of courses in statistics. This article is structured as a set of questions and answers, seeking to address many of the concerns and considerations that one may face as they transition a course’s grading structure. Abortion Pills: US History and Politics
This is the first book to offer a comprehensive history of abortion pills in the United States. Public intellectual and lawyer Carrie N. Baker shows how courageous activists waged a decades-long campaign to establish, expand, and maintain access to abortion pills. Weaving their voices throughout her book, Baker recounts both dramatic and everyday acts of their resistance. These activists battled anti-abortion forces, overly cautious policymakers, medical gatekeepers, and fearful allies in their four-decade-long fight to free abortion pills. In post-Roe America, abortion pills are currently playing a critically important role in providing safe abortion access to tens of thousands of people living in states that now ban and restrict abortion. How Development and Survival Combine to Determine the Thermal Sensitivity of Insects
Thermal performance curves (TPCs) depict variation in vital rates in response to temperature and have been an important tool to understand ecological and evolutionary constraints on the thermal sensitivity of ectotherms. TPCs allow for the calculation of indicators of thermal tolerance, such as minimum, optimum, and maximum temperatures that allow for a given metabolic function. However, these indicators are computed using only responses from surviving individuals, which can lead to underestimation of deleterious effects of thermal stress, particularly at high temperatures. Here, we advocate for an integrative frame- work for assessing thermal sensitivity, which combines both vital rates and survival probabilities, and focuses on the temperature interval that allows for population persistence. Using a collated data set of Lepidopteran development rate and survival measured on the same individuals, we show that development rate is generally limiting at low temperatures, while survival is limiting at high temperatures. We also uncover differences between life stages and across latitudes, with extended survival at lower temperatures in temperate regions. Our combined performance metric demonstrates similar thermal breadth in temperate and tropical individuals, an effect that only emerges from integration of both development and survival trends. Book Abstract:
This volume brings together experts in generativity and related fields to provide a compelling overview of contemporary research and theory on this topic. Generativity refers to a concern for - or acting towards - the benefit of future generations as a legacy of the self; it has implications for outcomes at the individual, relational and social, and broader societal levels. Understanding the role and expressions of generativity at various stages of our lives is important to our sense of well-being and purpose, and it impacts our parenting, caregiving, and social relationships, as well as having implications for our activities and experiences in the workforce, and in voluntary activities in our communities and the wider society. The chapters in this volume explore the meaning and impact of generativity across development and across life contexts and roles. They address generativity within a particular area or life domain, or period of the lifespan, and outline key methods and findings, as well as theoretical issues and applied implications. The volume represents the first comprehensive exploration of generativity from early to late adulthood; it offers a broad international perspective and will inform research into generativity across multiple cultures. Enter Stage Left: Immigration and the American Arts
To what extent have immigrants contributed to the growth of the United States arts sector? In this paper, we explore the impact of immigration during the Age of Mass Migration on the development of the arts in the U.S. over the past century. In the short run, our results suggest that immigration helped produce greater numbers of native artists. Over a century later, the bene- fits to the arts persist. Counties with greater historical immigration house more arts businesses and nonprofit organizations that generate more revenue, employ a larger proportion of the community, and earn more federal arts grants. When considering potential mechanisms, our analysis suggests that greater interaction between the aggregate immigrant population and natives led to increased exposure to new arts experiences and ideas, creating arts markets that persisted in the long run. This channel is further supported by positive links between the presence of immigrants from certain countries of origin and the growth of art forms popular in those countries, and evidence of long-run benefits to the arts that cannot be attributed to higher income in a causal mediation analysis. Altogether, our results highlight the important role that immigrants played in the development of the arts in America

This website is designed to introduce the fundamental concepts of igneous and metamorphic petrology to users who have some background in geology including mineralogy. It is intended for students who are taking an intermediate-level college course in petrology, but it includes many interactive diagrams and images that will be useful for teachers of petrology.
The website was created to take pedagogical advantage of features of the internet that we all use daily: images, animation, video, web connectivity, access to data, and especially interactivity. Readers are given control over diagrams with buttons, sliders, and mouseover effects. They can select data or upload their own data to be plotted on a variety of geochemical diagrams. There is an extensive visual Rock Library filled with photos and thin section photomicrographs to use as examples or reference. Students who read this text will be prompted to engage with the concepts and information presented through questions and responses requiring exploration that may include clicking on images, changing graphs with sliders, entering data for calculations, searching for information, and more
