Strengthening Food Security and Agricultural Livelihoods through Agroecological Systems in Drylands - GCP/GLO/927/GFF
With the global population expected to reach 9.6 billion by 2050, agriculture must meet the challenges of hunger and malnutrition in a context of increased pressure on natural resources, including soils and water, the loss of biodiversity and the uncertainty surrounding climate change. Farmers in dryland areas face constraints such as low water availability, low soil fertility and high density of weeds and pests. With climate change expected to lead to a decrease in average annual rainfall, and with average temperatures on the rise, the present project was developed in order to contribute to the development of agroecology in drylands as a tool to fight food insecurity, mitigate and adapt to climate change and restore degraded lands

Sustainable use and conservation of fermentation-associated microorganisms within the agrifood system
The Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture, at its Seventeenth Regular Session, adopted its Work Plan for the Sustainable Use and Conservation of Micro-organism and Invertebrate Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. In response to the workplan, a study on the sustainable use and conservation of fermentation-associated microorganisms within the agrifood system was prepared. The study delves into traditional and modern fermentation techniques and their potential contributions to food security. The study aims to inform the Commission, governments and practitioners on the state of conservation and policy landscape surrounding fermentation-associated microorganisms, including a review of existing access and benefit-sharing frameworks for these genetic resources

This document presents key findings from the Self-evaluation and Holistic Assessment of Climate Resilience of Farmers and Pastoralists (SHARP+) surveys conducted in October and November 2024 across the Nile Delta and Upper Egypt regions. The SHARP+ methodology, developed by FAO, provides a comprehensive tool for assessing smallholder farmers' climate resilience at the household level. The research was implemented as part of the SCALA programme (Scaling up Climate Ambition on Land Use and Agriculture), a joint initiative between FAO and UNDP.Key components include:- Detailed resilience scores across 21 modules spanning environmental, economic, and social domains- Primary focus on livestock-producing households and their climate adaptation capacity- Analysis aimed at informing stakeholders and supporting scaled climate action in agriculture and land useThis assessment serves as a critical resource for advancing the objectives of both the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by identifying strengths, vulnerabilities, and opportunities for enhancing resilience among agricultural communities in Egypt

The annual FAO/WFP Crop and Food Security Assessment Mission (CFSAM) was conducted from 3 to 16 December 2024 to estimate the cereal production during 2024 and assess the overall food security situation in the country. The 2024 net cereal production is estimated at about 1 123 000 tonnes, over 10 percent higher than the 2023 output and 25 percent above the average of the previous five years. Cereal production benefited from overall favourable weather conditions, limited flood-related damage to standing crops and a slight increase in planted area compared to the previous year due to improved security conditions. Despite the good performance of the 2024 cropping season, the cereal deficits remain significant, representing about one-quarter of the domestic cereal requirements, and the food security situation remains dire, with about 7.7 million people (57 percent of the total population) estimated to face IPC Phase 3 (Crisis) or worse levels of acute food insecurity during the lean season between April and July 2025. The main drivers of food insecurity are protracted macroeconomic challenges resulting in high inflation and soaring food prices, insufficient food supply, the lingering impact on livelihoods of consecutive years with widespread floods, episodes of intercommunal violence and a sustained influx of returnees from the war-affected Sudan
