No full textThis Q4 2024 report summarises the latest information from the World Reference Laboratory for Foot-and-Mouth Disease (WRLFMD) and our partners within the World Organization of Animal Health (WOAH) and the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) Laboratory Network (www.foot-and-mouth.org). During this quarter, the WRLFMD has reported vaccine-matching data for samples received from Indonesia and for South American field isolates received from PANAFTOSA, Brazil. New VP1 sequences have also been received from Iran (from GenBank), Palestinian AT (Ministry of Agriculture Veterinary Services and Animal Health) and Türkiye (Şap Enstitüsü, Türkiye)

Floods in 2024, combined with pest attacks, destroyed nearly 14 percent of cultivated areas, threatening to worsen food insecurity and malnutrition well before the lean season. In 2025, persistent insecurity, climate shocks and population movements will continue to hamper the recovery of vulnerable households. Emergency agricultural assistance will be crucial to enable them to feed themselves once their stocks are depleted and to safeguard their livelihoods

No full textAt the request of the Ministry of Agriculture (MoA), a joint FAO/WFP Crop and Food Security Assessment Mission (CFSAM) visited the country from 15 to 28 July 2024 to estimate the 2024 crop production, identify factors that affected production, forecast staple food import requirements for the 2024/25 marketing year (July/June), analyse the domestic food market and assess the acute food security situation. The Mission identified measures to address some of the most pressing challenges in the agriculture sector with the aim of improving national food security and safety as well as strengthening the performance of the sector in line with the Lebanon National Agriculture Strategy (NAS) 2021–2025.The escalating conflict since September 2024 poses serious risks to agricultural production, which has been an important source of income and employment since the financial collapse which started in October 2019, endangering its ability to support livelihoods, especially for vulnerable communities.The CFSAM was conducted at the end of July 2024, prior to the recent expansion in the intensity of the South border conflict taking place in Lebanon since 8 October 2024. At the time of finalization of this report, the ongoing conflict had further intensified and expanded beyond South, leading to the displacement of up to an estimated 1 million people inside the country, according to Lebanese authorities, with more than 258 000 persons between Lebanese and Syrian refugees having crossed the border to the Syrian Arab Republic as well, as of 10 October 2024
