From seed to shelf: Models for integrating agrobiodiversity in food processing activities

    No full text
This booklet presents five real and proven models of collaboration between food processing industry and those implementing the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture by conserving, using and promoting crop diversity. The models have been presented at a Special Event, preceding the Tenth meeting of the Standing Committee on the Funding Strategy and Resource Mobilization. Each example takes a different shape tailored to the partners involved, with its own objectives, benefits, and impacts. While there is no single approach to engagement, these cases illustrate the breadth of possibilities and are intended to inspire new ideas and partnerships. The booklet also includes trends and concrete recommendations arising from the cases that could be informative to other and new collaborations between food processing industry players and managers of crop diversity

    Interim report, project code: GCP/NEP/076/GCF

The project focuses on the Churia region of Nepal, a special ecological zone regulating surface water flows and recharging groundwater and facing high levels of climate-related risk. The project aims to bolster ecosystem resilience and protection from climate related threats in 26 high-risk river systems. Activities included combating deforestation and degradation, promoting climate-resilient agriculture, and investing in community level resilient infrastructure. A significant amount was achieved in infrastructure over 2024, valued by communities. Less successful are longer-term interventions in forestry and climate resilient agriculture where progress has lagged. The slow pace of delivery remains a major concern, and urgent improvements are needed in the delivery model. The evaluation made recommendations to optimize each partner’s role and budget to allow for greater efficiencies and delivery improvements; update plans accordingly; address persistent staffing and expertise gaps; strengthen systems for monitoring and accountability; and build stronger collaborative partnerships for further climate resilience initiatives

    Case study

This case study highlights the steady renewal of the Peam Khleang Community Fishery (CFi) in Kandal Province, where local management once struggled to protect resources and maintain participation. Through support from the CAPFISH-Capture Programme, funded by the European Union and implemented by the Fisheries Administration (FiA) of MAFF with technical guidance from FAO, the community has strengthened its internal governance and diversified its livelihood base.A fair and community-led re-election of the CFi committee helped restore trust and clarify responsibilities. Continuous training enabled committee members to work more confidently with commune authorities and FiA officers. The adoption of the SMART patrolling system made surveillance more systematic and evidence-based, improving compliance with fisheries regulations. At the same time, intentional efforts to involve women increased their visibility and influence in decision-making processes. The introduction of alternative income-generating activities—such as small-scale aquaculture, poultry raising, and vegetable production—has reduced direct pressure on natural fish stocks. Revenues are now reinvested into shared needs identified by the community, creating a cycle of benefits that supports stronger governance, social inclusion, and sustainable fisheries management

When paired with climate-smart agriculture practices and improved production technologies, nutrient-enriched crops offer a sustainable pathway to enhance the nutrient content of widely consumed staple foods. The aim of this guidance note is to generate support and catalyze investment for nutrient-enriched crops.Targeted at programme planners and implementers, this guide offers a step-by-step approach to programme development, including design, operationalization, monitoring, and evaluation. It outlines a practical minimum package of actions to support timely and effective implementation and illustrates how to assess return on investment for both pre-market research and delivery programmes to inform government decision-making and investors. The guidance note draws on several country case studies. An expert advisory group provided strategic inputs across the value chain, from crop breeding to consumer engagement. The group guided the selection of case studies, defined data collection priorities, reviewed the economic evaluation methodology, and validated final outputs. By distilling good practices from multiple country experiences and outlining a defined approach, this guidance note contributes to accelerating progress towards sustainable, nutrition-sensitive agriculture priorities. It aims to promote nutrient-enriched staple crops as part of healthy diets and to prevent micronutrient deficiencies

The Coastal Fisheries Initiative project in West Africa was implemented by FAO from 2017 to 2024 in Cape Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, and Senegal, with funding from the Global Environment Facility (GEF). This project aimed to support the sustainable development of coastal fisheries, with a focus on artisanal fishing and the inclusion of women in fish processing. This is its final evaluation. The evaluation concluded that the project was relevant and technically sound, with strong stakeholder support. However, its effectiveness was limited by external challenges, and its sustainability could be threatened without additional funding. Recommendations include improving gender integration, anticipating environmental impacts, and strengthening financial planning and monitoring. This evaluation aims to inform policymakers, donors, and practitioners working in the field of sustainable fisheries and inclusive development
