    This training guide on measuring monitoring, evaluation and learning (MEL) was developed to help stakeholders in tropical fruit value chains to generate evidence regarding their resilience and sustainability interventions. Based on the technical guide “Monitoring, evaluation and learning: generating evidence on resilience and sustainability in the tropical fruit sector”, the training guide provides an introduction and practical guidance to the topic, aligned with good MEL practices and responsible business conduct. The training guide describes a collection of learning materials designed to help trainers and learners build skills in measuring the impact of interventions aimed at enhancing the resilience and sustainability of tropical fruit businesses. It also supports tracking progress, reporting results, and promoting transparency. The development of this material was made possible by the support of the Government of Germany

    In Mongolia, plant pests pose a critical challenge to agricultural yield, crop quality, and food safety. However, in addressing this issue, the use of chemical-intensive methods has raised concerns regarding health risks to agricultural workers, food contamination, and soil degradation. Although national laws, standards, and monitoring systems exist to control pesticide residues in food, their implementation has been constrained by limited technical capacity. Additionally, while there are laboratories capable of testing plant and soil samples, these facilities require additional support and resources to expand their analytical scope. As a net food-importing nation, Mongolia also requires robust phytosanitary measures to ensure compliance with international standards in pest detection and plant quarantine. Despite joining the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) in 2018, Mongolia’s genetic resources information system remains limited to spreadsheet programs, restricting information exchange with international gene banks

    The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)’s scientific advice programme for food safety risk assessment and nutrition aims to respond to requests from Codex Alimentarius and other stakeholders working to enhance global food safety and nutrition. While policy-setting bodies from FAO Member States and Codex Alimentarius are the primary stakeholders, others also benefit from science-based information for risk management decisions. This project supported FAO’s scientific advice process by organizing expert meetings and gathering data on key food safety issues. It focused on three main topics: food safety in cellular agriculture, methylmercury risks in seafood, and the use of Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) for microbial hazards and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in LMICs. Additionally, it provided broader support to FAO/World Health Organization (WHO) expert committees and meetings on food safety, microbiological risk assessment, nutrition and pesticide residues

    Avian influenza (AI) is a highly contagious disease that affects poultry, wild birds, and mammals and poses risks to animal and human health. The FAO warns of a heightened risk of outbreaks in Asia due to increased poultry trade and travel of people before the Lunar New Year in January 2025. This publication highlights AI trends, emphasizing zoonotic risks and the need for strict biosecurity measures.The report details AI outbreaks, driven by live poultry trade, wild bird migrations, and poor biosecurity. It stresses the importance of surveillance, rapid response, and enhanced disease prevention to protect livelihoods and public health.FAO urges immediate action, including border controls, improved biosecurity, and increased surveillance of domestic and wild birds. Collaboration between governments, industry, and international organizations is key to mitigating AI risks

    The Framework for Sustainable Agricultural Mechanization in Africa (F-SAMA) was developed in 2018 through a collaboration between the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Department of Rural Development and Blue Economy and Sustainable Environment (DARBE) at the African Union Commission (AUC). The F-SAMA supports the creation of sustainable manufacture and distribution systems by using agricultural mechanization inputs along the whole production chain, from imports of raw material to other equipment that is suitable to the local conditions and requirements of the smallholder farmers. Several participating countries encountered institutional limitations to accommodate the interests of small-scale farmers (including women and youth) as well as small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs) across different agrifood systems. There was also a need to strengthen mechanisms to facilitate a subregional exchange of information, technologies and networking, as well as subregional cooperation to design and implement collaborative subregional programmes, given that national markets of agricultural machinery and human capacities are too limited to achieve economies of scale, and to build sustainable institutions that will promote the sustainable agricultural mechanization for climate-smart agriculture (SAM4CSA)

    Jordan, recognized as one of the most water-scarce nations globally, confronts formidable climate change risks. The exacerbation of water scarcity due to climate change profoundly impacts rural and urban areas, posing threats to household safety, health, livelihoods, and sustainable development. Jordan's susceptibility to climate hazards is compounded by erratic rainfall patterns, rising temperatures, and an unprecedented population surge. Certain sectors, notably agriculture, bear a heightened vulnerability, with 61 percent of cultivated land relying on rainfed agriculture. In response to documented exposure, vulnerability, and adaptation deficits, project interventions target four Governorates within the Dead Sea Basin, namely Karak, Madaba, Talifah, and Ma’an. Aligned with Jordan's climate change policy (2013-2020), the project aims to bolster adaptive capacity among communities and institutions, cater to the needs of vulnerable demographics, and enhance the resilience of water management systems and the agricultural sector in the face of climate change
