Multi-factor, multi-state, multi-model scenarios: exploring food and climate futures for Southeast Asia

    No full text
Decision-makers aiming to improve food security, livelihoods and resilience are faced with an uncertain future. To develop robust policies they need tools to explore the potential effects of uncertain climatic, socioeconomic, and environmental changes. Methods have been developed to use scenarios to present alternative futures to inform policy. Nevertheless, many of these can limit the possibility space with which decision-makers engage. This paper will present a participatory scenario process that maintains a large possibility space through the use of multiple factors and factor-states and a multi-model ensemble to create and quantify four regional scenarios for Southeast Asia. To do this we will explain 1) the process of multi-factor, multi-state building was done in a stakeholder workshop in Vietnam, 2) the scenario quantification and model results from GLOBIOM and IMPACT, two economic models, and 3) how the scenarios have already been applied to diverse policy processes in Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam

    Commit to Grow Equality

    No full text
This document outlines the governance, partnership and operational framework of FAO's Commit to Grow Equality (CGE) initiative. CGE is a voluntary, multi-stakeholder initiative with the goal to accelerate gender equality and women’s empowerment in agrifood systems, making them work better for women. CGE's governance structure is based on three main pillars: CGE Partners, the CGE Advisory Group and the CGE Core Team. Together, these three components form a collaborative, flexible governance structure. The document is intended for use by partners or prospective partners and complements the information available on the CGE website: https://www.fao.org/commit-grow-equality/join-the-initiative/e

Desalination and agriculture: Balancing opportunities and challenges in the context of changing climate

    No full text
Climate change and growing water scarcity are increasingly challenging global agricultural production, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. Although agriculture uses more than 70 percent of the world’s freshwater, many areas are facing severe shortages worsened by climate change. To address this issue, the FAO, through initiatives such as WASAG and WSI, is exploring non-conventional water sources, including desalination. Desalination, which removes salt and impurities from seawater or brackish water, is rapidly expanding, with more than 19,000 facilities producing over 100 million cubic meters of freshwater each day. While desalination offers a promising solution to secure water for agriculture, its adoption requires careful consideration of technological, economic, and environmental trade-offs. This policy brief examines the potential of desalination for agricultural development, highlighting its challenges and opportunities, and provides key policy recommendations to maximize its benefits in the context of climate change

The present Country Gender Assessment examines the gender dimension and dynamics of agriculture and the rural sector in Kiribati. The assessment aims to highlight the state of gender (in)equality and rural women’s empowerment in agriculture and rural development (ARD) and to inform the country and regional level work of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to more precisely target technical support for ARD to the Government of Kiribati

Resource guide to Target 2 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework

    No full text
This publication serves as a comprehensive resource guide to help countries implement Target 2 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM-GBF). Created for Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and other partners, it offers essential guidance, practical recommendations, and background information to maximize the impact of restoration efforts across various ecosystems. By building on existing initiatives like the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration, this guide provides a pathway for integrating restoration into national biodiversity plans, offering tools and support to help countries achieve a balanced net gain for both people and nature

Lessons learned and good practices in strengthening animal and public health systems in Africa and Asia

    No full text
The Global Health Security Agenda (GHSA) was an eight-year programme funded by the United States Agency for International Development. It aimed to strengthen animal and human health systems in twenty countries in Africa and Asia. The goal of this evaluation was to identify lessons learned and good practices to inform future One Health efforts. The evaluation found that the GHSA programme enhanced animal health capacity by establishing expert teams at both national and regional levels, strengthening laboratory and surveillance systems and facilitating One Health collaborations. These activities build on previous efforts and remain highlight relevant, as evidenced during the COVID-19 pandemic

Transforming food and agriculture through a systems approach

    No full text

    Story by Rosa Rullo Callau

Addressing land degradation across landholding scales

    No full text
The 2025 edition of The State of Food and Agriculture explores the theme “Addressing land degradation across landholding scales”. It examines the implications of human-induced land degradation for agricultural production, producers of all scales and vulnerable populations. The report presents new findings on how cropland degradation contributes to the yield gap worldwide against a backdrop of broader degradation processes on other land cover types and even land abandonment. Drawing on the latest data on global farm distribution, farm sizes and crop production, the report highlights how the scale at which land is managed shapes both the constraints and the opportunities for adopting sustainable land use and management practices. It also underscores the importance of policymaking that encompasses regulatory and incentive-based measures, tailored to the varied conditions and scales of land use, to avoid, reduce and reverse land degradation
