Ukraine: Abstract of the household food security and agricultural livelihoods assessment (July 2025)
In July 2025, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations conducted a household food security and agricultural livelihoods assessment in government-controlled areas of Ukraine to support evidence-based decision-making. The assessment was based on phone interviews with 2 874 households across nine frontline oblasts. Results show that agriculture, largely subsistence-based, remains a key source of household resilience. Households engaged in farming demonstrate better food security outcomes, including more diverse diets and lower reliance on negative coping strategies. At the same time, many agricultural households face increasing financial pressure due to stagnant or declining incomes. Exposure to war-related and socioeconomic shocks significantly worsens food security, particularly among households near the frontline, women-headed households and internally displaced persons. Limited access to agricultural inputs and declining production highlight the urgent need for targeted support to protect livelihoods and strengthen household resilience

Understanding the phytosanitary requirements for the movement of wood packaging material in international trade
A successful collaboration with Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali Guido Carli (Luiss)
Highlights key results achieved under the collaboration between FAO and the Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali Guido Carli (Luiss), initiated in 2018 and later scaled into a formal partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in 2022. FAO and Luiss share a common goal of developing youth capacities for a sustainable future. Under the partnership, Luiss has integrated several FAO e-learning courses into its programmes and encourages students to use FAO’s e-learning resources. The partnership also provides students with knowledge and hands-on experience aligned with FAO’s mission by engaging them in FAO fora, the World Food Forum, and UN Model programmes, thereby strengthening their skills as future leaders in agrifood systems transformation
A pilot study
Metrics commonly used to assess household resilience fail to capture individual-level dietary vulnerabilities, particularly among women and young children. Considering individual dietary adequacy is essential, as it reflects a household's ability to maintain nutritional wellbeing during periods of stress. This study pilots the integration of two indicators of individual-level dietary diversity, Minimum Dietary Diversity for Women (MDD-W) and for Children (MDD-C), into a resilience capacity framework, using unique household survey data collected in 2024 from eight provinces in Afghanistan. The analysis tests both the feasibility of collecting individual dietary data in fragile contexts and the added value of these indicators in resilience assessment. Findings reveal notable variation in adult female participation across provinces, with overall engagement remaining low (32 percent). Female enumerators were more likely to obtain consent, increasing participation by 13–15 percentage points. FAO beneficiaries show greater openness to participation, particularly when interviewed by male enumerators, suggesting that prior program engagement fosters trust and facilitates data collection. For women, dietary diversity is associated with household wealth, education, and income diversification; for children, mainly with access to basic services, such as health care, clean water, and markets. In the original resilience framework, which relies on household-level indicators of food access, more than one in five women in the most resilient households still fail to achieve acceptable MDD-W. The enhanced model demonstrates that incorporating indicators of individual dietary diversity leads to a more nuanced understanding of resilience capacity, offering practical lessons for data collection in culturally sensitive, restrictive and fragile settings
The Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ Agreement)
The guide outlines how the BBNJ Agreement affects and involves the fisheries sector. Although the Agreement does not regulate fisheries directly, its new processes – such as ABMTs, EIAs, capacity building, and marine genetic resource governance – require fisheries data, expertise, and collaboration. The guide explains these intersections and shows how fisheries bodies can engage to ensure coherence with existing mandates while benefiting from new opportunities for cooperation, science, and capacity development. It encourages proactive participation so that fisheries contribute to, and gain from, a more integrated system of ocean governance
Cluster evaluation of FAO resilience activities in Yemen 2018–2024
This report presents the findings of an independent evaluation of selected areas of the Food andAgriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)’s resilience programme in Yemen, covering theperiod 2018 to mid-2024. The evaluation examined FAO’s contributions in four thematic areas: naturalresources management (NRM) (with a focus on water), agriculture, livestock and governance, within theframework of the humanitarian–development–peace (HDP) nexus. The primary users of the evaluation arethe FAO Yemen Country Office, the Government of Yemen, the Sana’a-based authorities, FAO regional andheadquarters divisions, as well as resource partners, implementing partners, and other humanitarian anddevelopment actors in Yemen
