Eighth Operational Phase of the GEF Small Grants Programme (Tranche II)
This GEF-funded Small Grants Programme addresses the interconnected crises of biodiversity loss, climate change and pollution by supporting community-led solutions that strengthen socio-ecological resilience. Through blended finance combining Small Grants Programme (SGP) grants with FAO technical assistance, the FAO-implemented SGP interventions will derisk local investments and build the capacities of civil society and community-based organizations to deliver investment-ready initiatives. FAO is implementing the GEF SGP across 13 countries under OP8 Tranche II to restore and improve over 350,000 hectares of terrestrial and marine ecosystems and benefit around 45,000 people, prioritizing women, youth, people with disabilities and Indigenous Peoples through inclusive, locally led approaches
Sierra Leone
Under the umbrella of the 50x2030 Initiative to Close the Agricultural Data Gap, FAO provided technical support for the Sierra Leone 2024 Annual Agricultural Survey implemented by Statistics Sierra Leone. This brief provides key insights on agricultural holdings in the household sector of Sierra Leone during the agricultural year 2024. It presents indicators on agricultural land and holding size, crop output and yields, livestock rearing, input and labour use
Monitoring changes in the global mountain population: new insights and data
This technical brief provides an updated global assessment of mountain population trends from 2000 to 2030, using the UNEP–WCMC mountain classification. The global mountain population is projected to reach 1.24 billion by 2030, with Africa showing the fastest growth and urban areas driving the most significant increases. These dynamics call for inclusive territorial planning, investment in climate-resilient infrastructure and stronger data systems to advance sustainable mountain development and support the Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions (2023–2027)
Kenya
These documents, comprising census reports, questionnaires, instruction manuals, and other related census materials, constitute national agricultural census records submitted by member countries to the FAO Statistics Division. FAO compiles and archives these census documents, which serve as the foundation for the preparation of methodological reviews of national agricultural censuses, including key findings on countries’ structural characteristics of agriculture. The Statistics Division of FAO periodically disseminates these country census documents and the associated methodological reviews through its official website
Taking a sustainable land management approach in law
This study is divided into five main sections. Section 1 introduces the subject of SLM. Section 2 introduces the international framework supporting uptake of SLM principles – the section provides an overview of international agreements and programmes aimed at expanding the uptake of this approach. Section 3 situates SLM in the context of intersecting issues, including land degradation neutrality, land-use change, and climate change, among others. Section 4 presents examples of good practices for incorporating SLM considerations into supportive legal frameworks, providing examples from different global regions. Section 4 is divided into 13 sections, each focusing on different areas of law. The instruments studied in the section are largely legislations and regulations, with some mention of policies and local, state, and national government programmes where relevant. Section 5 discusses SLM implementation priorities and provides concluding remarks

This terminal evaluation reviews the “Integrated ecosystem management program for the sustainable human development in Mauritania”. The project aimed to sustainably improve the livelihoods and the natural resource base upon which rural communities depend in three landscapes of southern Mauritania. The project activities were largely complete, but outcomes were mostly not achieved. The large size of the project intervention area and spatially dispersed project activities meant that no critical mass was achieved. The evaluation mainly recommended that the GEF and FAO (the implementing agency) ensure that future projects are realistic in scale and scope, have flexibility to respond to emerging local priorities and adopt forward planning to ensure timely implementation; leverage successful models of long-term community-based natural resource management institutions; ensure meaningful stakeholder and community participation
