    An Updated Census of the Edition of 1555 of Andreas Vesalius' De Humani Corporis Fabrica in the United States of America

    The purpose of this study was to update the locations in the United States of America (USA) of the second edition (1555) of the De Humani Corporis Fabrica written by Vesalius.Contacts were made with institutions of higher learning, museum libraries, and libraries of national collections, libraries of research institutions, antique book dealers, internet searches, book auctions and private collectors.A total of 58 copies of the 1555 Fabrica were found in 49 University and Institutional Libraries in USA. The earlier census underreported 29% of the locations of these volumes.The majority of the original locations published by Cushing seventy years ago have remained in current collections. Location in private collections was more difficult to determine and accounts for 15% of the second edition books in the census

    El tratamiento antirretroviral de gran actividad (TARGA) constituye uno de los avances más importantes en el manejo de los pacientes con infección por el virus de la inmunodeficiencia humana (VIH). Sin embargo, su uso a largo plazo conlleva el riesgo de aparición de enfermedades óseas como la osteporosis y la osteonecrosis. Uno de los fármacos más utilizados dentro de los esquemas de TARGA es el tenofovir disoproxil fumarato (TDF), un análogo de nucleótido inhibidor de la transcriptasa inversa que tiene buen perfil de seguridad y tolerancia, pero que ha sido asociado con el desarrollo de osteomalacia hipofosfatémica (OMH). Presentamos el caso de un varón de 56 años con infección crónica por VIH que desarrolló dolor óseo generalizado y debilidad durante el tratamiento con TDF, detectándose en el estudio analítico hipofosfatemia y aumento de su nivel basal de fosfatasa alcalina, con fosfaturia y calciuria normales. La radiografía mostraba aplastamientos vertebrales dorsales y la gammagrafía ósea reveló una hipercaptación difusa compatible con patrón “superscan†metabólico. Este patrón ha sido descrito de forma infrecuente en la OMH asociada a TDF, por lo que realizamos una revisión de los casos previamente publicados. Â

    Dentists commonly prescribe antibiotics for controlling and treating dental infections. But there is a widespread abuse of antibiotics in medical and dental field. The inappropriate use of antibiotics results in increased treatment costs, increased risk of adverse events related to the antibiotic used and most importantly development and propagation of antimicrobial resistance. The definitive indications for use of antibiotics in dentistry are limited and specific. This review discusses the various principles and rationale behind antibiotic therapy in different fields of dentistry with stress on rational antibiotic use in dentistry

    Immune-based strategies for treatment and prevention of hepatitis C virus infection

    Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection affects about 3% of the world’s population. Currently, the gold standard therapy does not work in a high percentage of patients and with all genotypes. In addition, it is costly, is associated with many side-effects. So, more convenient therapeutic strategies have been sought. These include, direct acting antivirals (DAAs), and immune-based therapy. Four DAA molecules have recently been approved by FDA.  Immune-based therapy aims at augmenting host immunity, thus prevention of infection or clearance of the virus with subsequent recovery can occur. Boosting T cell responses and activating humoral immune reactions have been targeted in the development of novel combating tools. The most intensively studied immune-therapeutic strategies are: 1) vaccines; either therapeutic or prophylactic, 2) dendritic cell immunotherapy, 3) antagonists of T cell inhibitory factors, 4) anti-HCV neutralizing antibodies, 4) cytokines and chemokines, 5) agonists for TLRs, and 6) caspase inhibitors

    Colistin in Critically Ill Patients: A Critical Review

    Colistin emerged in the last decade as a savior for the treatment of critically septic patients who suffer MDR-GNB infections. This develop- ment came in time with the drying new antibacterial pipelines. MDR- GNB became problematic in ICU’s including MDR Acinetobacter spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and carbapenemase-producing Enterobac- teriaecae (CPE).With the resurgence of wide colistin prescription espe- cially in ICU’s, awareness on when to switch to this reintroduced drug is required. Recently, it is observed that there are differences between the past dosages and the currently proposed dosages. Nephrotoxicity and neurotoxicity are observed to be less than what was published in the past.This may be due to more pure preparations and attention to other drug therapies that are employed in the critically ill patients residing the ICU’s. However,randomized control studies are still lack- ing to shed light on its efficacy and safety. Agreement is still looming on dosages, and monotherapy of colistin versus its combination with other agents

    Gastritis and peptic ulcers are considered as major health problems worldwide with more than 80% of chronic active gastritis are due to the pathogenic bacterium H. pylori. Due to the emergence of antibiotic resistance among clinical strains of H. pylori, alternative approaches are increasingly needed. Methanolic extracts of Algerian originated Mentha rotundifolia, Eucalyptus globulus, Malva sylvestris, Inula viscosa, Achillea odorata and Utrica dioica and their contents of phenolics and flavonoids were evaluated for the in vitro antimicrobial activity against H. pylori in addition to its associated urease. The antimicrobial activity and determination of the MICs of these extracts against control strain of H. pylori was performed using standard agar diffusion method.  The highest phenolic and flavonoid contents were found in M. rotundifolia and E. globulus while M. sylvestris showed the least phenolic contents. In addition, polyphenolic fractions exhibited anti-H. pylori activity of all of the herbal extracts with  highest activity for E. globulus (MIC 0.094 mg/ml), I. viscosa, (0.375 mg/ml) and U. dioica (0.75 mg/ml), low antimicrobial activity was revield for  A. odorata, M. rotundifolia and Malva sylvestris respectively (MIC > 1 mg/ml).  For the urease activity, all extracts showed inhibitory effect at concentration of 250 mg/ml. However, the range of the urease inhibitory concentrations varied significantly among the extracts with highest activity and widest range found for E. globulus (70-90% at concentrations 8-125 mg/ml). In conclusion, the presence of potential antimicrobial activities in the polyphenolic extracts of medicinal plants against H. pylori and its associated urease would open the door for investigation of novel agents for the control of H. pylori infections

    Presentamos una serie de tres casos de Síndrome de Parsonage-Turner valorados a lo largo de los dos últimos años. Todos los pacientes se presentaron por primera vez como un dolor de hombro irradiado a trapecio y la parte proximal del brazo asociado a disminución de la sensibilidad de la extremidad afectada. En todos se observó el signo de la escápula alada. Incluimos una revisión de la literatura y proponemos un algoritmo simplificado de diagnóstico de este síndrome
