STOCK MARKET DEVELOPMENT AND ECONOMIC GROWTH: AN EMPIRICAL ANALYSIS FOR TUNISIA
This paper examines the influence of the Tunisian stock market development on economic growth. We perform a time series investigation for the period 1998-2018 using four measures of stock market development: total value traded to GDP; market capitalisation to GDP; stock market turnover ratio, and stock market depth. GDP growth rate is used as a proxy for economic growth. Since the series are non-stationary, we perform the cointegration test and use the ECM method developed by Engle-Granger to consider both short-term and long-term dynamics. Our findings report that the ratio of the total value of trades divided by GDP and the turnover ratio have a positive long-run effect on economic growth at the 10% significance level. This result supports the hypothesis of the importance of liquidity in promoting investment and long-run economic growth. The results also reveal that in the short term, stock market development does not have a significant impact on Tunisia’s economic growth. JEL: G10, G12, O40, C22 Article visualizations
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT OF THE TIN MINING INDUSTRY IN PLATEAU STATE, NIGERIA
This study investigated the impact and sustainability of current tin mining practices in selected communities in Plateau State, Nigeria, focusing on social, economic, and environmental dimensions. Using a mixed-method research design, data were gathered from 385 community members through structured questionnaires and from 12 purposively selected participants via semi-structured interviews. The findings reveal that, despite the industry's historical significance in the region, tin mining has contributed little to the overall social development of the affected communities. Inadequate infrastructure, limited access to quality education and healthcare, and the absence of inclusive development programs highlight the industry's failure to foster meaningful social progress. Economically, the industry has not significantly enhanced livelihoods, with many residents remaining economically marginalized and excluded from stable income opportunities. Environmentally, mining activities have led to widespread degradation, including water and air pollution, deforestation, and soil erosion, with minimal evidence of remediation efforts. Social and economic challenges associated with mining were perceived as moderate but persistent, affecting quality of life, employment stability, and fair distribution of economic benefits. Environmental challenges, however, were viewed as severe, posing significant risks to health and ecological balance. Community perceptions overwhelmingly indicate that current mining practices are unsustainable due to exclusion from decision-making, unchecked environmental damage, and minimal long-term benefits. Based on these findings, the study concludes that for tin mining to become a vehicle for sustainable development, a shift in policy and operational practices is imperative. It is recommended that mining firms and government agencies implement inclusive community engagement strategies, ensure equitable economic participation, and enforce strict environmental protection regulations, including rehabilitation of degraded areas and adoption of sustainable mining technologies. EFFECT OF RISK EVALUATION PRACTICES ON THE PERFORMANCE OF CONSTRUCTION FIRMS IN NAIROBI COUNTY, KENYA
This study investigated the effect of risk evaluation practices on the performance of construction firms in Nairobi County, Kenya. Specifically, it examined the impact of risk assessment likelihood, impact evaluation, risk prioritization, quantitative evaluation methods, and regular risk reviews on firm performance. The research employed a descriptive research design with a sample size of 222 construction industry professionals, determined using the Taro Yamane formula. Data was collected through structured questionnaires and analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression analysis. The findings revealed a moderate positive correlation between risk evaluation practices and construction firm performance, with risk evaluation practices explaining 15.2% of the variance in firm performance (β = 0.152, p = 0.050). The study found that aspects such as impact evaluation, risk prioritization, and regular reviews significantly contribute to firm performance. However, the research highlighted areas of concern, particularly in the adoption of quantitative evaluation methods. The study concludes that implementing comprehensive risk evaluation policies can significantly enhance firm performance among construction companies. These findings contribute to the growing body of literature on risk management and firm performance in the construction industries, particularly in the Kenyan context. Article visualizations
TRANSFORMING TRAVEL: THE ROLE OF EMERGING TECHNOLOGIES IN SHAPING THE TOURISM INDUSTRY
The rapid advancement of digital technologies has significantly transformed the global tourism landscape, altering how destinations are promoted, how services are delivered, and how tourists plan, experience, and reflect on their journeys. This article explores the evolving relationship between tourism and technology, with a focus on the integration of digital platforms, mobile applications, and intelligent information systems within the tourism industry. Beginning with an overview of the digitalization of tourism services, the paper reviews existing academic literature to identify key technological developments that have redefined industry practices and consumer behavior. The core of the article analyzes the implementation and impact of various technologies, including online booking platforms, mobile travel apps, Internet of Things (IoT) solutions, and data-driven marketing strategies. Special attention is given to the rise of smart tourism infrastructures and the role of artificial intelligence in personalizing travel experiences. Furthermore, the article examines how social media and user-generated content influence destination image and tourist decision-making. Case studies from technologically advanced tourist destinations are used to illustrate both the opportunities and challenges associated with this digital transformation. In conclusion, the article emphasizes that while technology enhances operational efficiency and the overall tourist experience, it also raises concerns related to privacy, accessibility, and the uneven distribution of digital resources. The discussion highlights the need for inclusive and sustainable digital strategies in tourism development, calling for continued research into the social and economic implications of technological integration across diverse tourism contexts. HOW DO PARENTS OF AUTISTIC ADULTS IN THE ARAB SECTOR IN ISRAEL PERCEIVE THEIR ROLE IN SUPPORTING THEIR CHILDREN DURING THEIR ADULTHOOD LIFE AFTER SCHOOL?
This research explores how parents of autistic adults living in the Arab sector in Israel understand and enact their roles of caregiving during the transition to adulthood after school. The research was undertaken due to the increasing need to understand the lived experiences of parents caring for an autistic adult child, where support during the transition to adulthood is often not present at all, and especially to families living in under-resourced and culturally different communities. As a new addition to the literature, the research contributes by illustrating the cultural, emotional, and structural complexities influencing parental support for their autistic children living in Arab communities. Thematic analysis was used as part of a qualitative, phenomenological methodology, which included data collected from semi-structured interviews and focus groups conducted with 40 Arab parents. The findings demonstrated that parents provided emotional, financial, and practical holistic support to their autistic adult child, but were also confronted by systemic negligence, cultural stigma, and economic struggle. In conclusion, the care being offered by parents is dependent on their family resources, with few professional services available, and often, the services available are not culturally appropriate. Links were made in the recommendations for research and practice about establishing and developing systems to provide culturally appropriate, accessible community-based supports and transition programs, for autistic adults living in the Arab sector of Israel. In theoretical terms, the research adds to the understanding of caregiving in minority communities; in practical terms, the research shows an urgent need to create and enact inclusive policies that integrate family voices into the autism care structure. THE ARAB WORKING WOMAN BETWEEN THE REALITY AND THE DESIRED: HOW DO ARAB WORKING WOMEN PERCEIVE THE GAP BETWEEN THEIR CURRENT WORKPLACE EXPERIENCES AND THEIR IDEAL PROFESSIONAL ASPIRATIONS, AND WHAT FACTORS INFLUENCE THIS PERCEIVED GAP?
This study investigates how Arab working women in Israel perceive the gap between their real workplace experiences and their ideal professional aspirations, aiming to understand the cultural, structural, and social factors that shape this divide. The research used qualitative methods and engaged 40 Arab women working with a range of religious affiliations and socio-economic backgrounds through semi-structured interviews. The study highlights the paradox of motivated Arab women with credentials facing notions of gender equity, hegemonic cultural stereotypes, intersectional discrimination, and work–family conflicts while simultaneously being abruptly limited in their access to career progression and leadership roles. The research argues that institutional structures and rooted ideologies that underpin notions of gender equity must change for Arab women to achieve true equity in Israel's labor market. The study recommends policies to expand mentorship opportunities, workplace cultures and access to a broader range of professions. The research contributes in both theoretical and practical terms regarding the lived realities of Arab women in Israel and urges action to reduce the gap between what Arab women aspire to and what they can achieve in Israel’s labor market. THE EFFECT OF FOREIGN DIRECT INVESTMENT ON ECONOMIC GROWTH IN SIERRA LEONE
The paper investigates the effect of foreign direct investment on economic growth in Sierra Leone. A model of real GDP growth was estimated with annual data from 1980 to 2022. Tests for stationarity were done in order to avoid spurious regression by using the Dickey-Fuller GLS test and a battery of structural break tests. An auto-regressive distributed lag model (ARDL) was estimated using the Ordinary Least Squares, following the transformation of non-stationary variables to obtain stationarity, which was the case for terms of trade only. A parsimonious model was then obtained from an over-parameterized model. The model results show that foreign direct investment (FDI) has a significant positive effect on economic growth, with a one percentage point of GDP increase in foreign direct investment increasing real GDP growth by 0.49 percentage point in the same year. Hence, policies that encourage more foreign direct investment in Sierra Leone are to be strengthened. Also, for enhanced poverty reduction, tilting foreign direct investment towards the agricultural sector to enhance agricultural transformation is imperative for a more productive agricultural sector, as a large chunk of Sierra Leone’s labor force, population, and the poor are in the rural areas, where agriculture is the predominant activity. PERCEIVED SOCIAL SUPPORT, PSYCHOLOGICAL WELL-BEING AND PERSONAL COPING IN RELATION TO ATTITUDE TOWARDS PERSON DEPRIVED OF LIBERTY: CONTEXT AMONG MALE INMATES
This study determined the best-fit model of attitude towards prisoners among 402 male inmates in Region 10. Specifically, it sought to examine how these psychosocial factors influence inmates’ self-perception and readiness for rehabilitation. A non-experimental, quantitative, descriptive-correlational research design was used. In analyzing the data, the weighted mean, the Pearson correlation coefficient, and the structural equation model were used. Results revealed all variables are rated high and significant correlations among the three predictor variables, perceived social support, psychological well-being, coping mechanisms and inmates’ attitudes toward themselves and fellow prisoners. Particularly, inmates who received strong emotional and instrumental support, displayed higher psychological resilience, and employed adaptive coping strategies were more likely to develop positive attitudes essential for successful reintegration. The study underscores the importance of holistic rehabilitation programs that foster supportive networks, mental wellness, and constructive coping among incarcerated individuals. These findings offer critical implications for prison administrators, mental health professionals, and policymakers in designing interventions that reduce recidivism and promote reintegration through psychosocial empowerment.
